In today's tutorial, we're going to make a beautiful crumb block, which can be used in a variety of ways. Yes, you can make a quilt out of blocks like this, but you can also use this method to make beautiful bags, pouches, potholders and more.

I wanted to mention that when I sit to sew crumbs, normally I don't get up to iron or pin. I just set at my machine and sew crumbs (and Crumb sets) together until they get quite large. I just wanted to show so that people who are beginners can see the process of how they go together.

I love this. I’m 45 years old and have (“had” possibly) a crazy quilt my mom made me when I was very little. It’s tattered and I love it so much. In the moving around within the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey I don’t know where it is. Hopefully I’ll find it.

Hi Janet! Oh, absolutely put them to use. In fact, I used larger pieces when I made this video than what I normally do. You can use any size piece. To me, it's a shame to throw pieces away that would make something beautiful. I'm glad I could help inspire you.

No, video was not too long. I cannot quit working with crumbs. I have a jigsaw puzzle I am trying to finish because the crumbs are calling me. Actually it is my sewing machine. But I always make crumb blocks. I go and buy scraps at the local quilt shop even. My favorite purchase.

What I love about crumb peicing is, if I only have 10mins I'm able to feel I've achieved something, very often that 10mins miracuously turns into an hour lol xxx

You seem to make all the pieces very "patchworky" and squares, which is fine (each to their own). I just wanted to share that I make rectangles, triangles, place them sideways, horizontally, vertically, all over the place. I guess there are many ways to make a crumb block.
@MariesScrappyCreations
@MariesScrappyCreations 10 месяцев назад
There definitely are many ways. When I'm not filming, I use all sorts of shapes and sizes, but it's difficult to guess what people have on hand for shapes, so I figured I'd keep it to the basics

@MariesScrappyCreations
@MariesScrappyCreations Год назад
Hi! Well it really varies on how much time it takes, because normally I just sit and sew a bunch of crumbs together into sections of 2 and then another time, I'll sit and sew the sections of 2 to another section of 2 and so on, and so on, before I go to make the blocks themselves. But I would guess if I was just trying to make one all by itself, it would probably take me 30 to 45 minutes
@thevictorianedge5465
@thevictorianedge5465 Год назад
Hi Marie. I have a question please. Do you recommend washing fabrics before sewing into a quilt top??
@MariesScrappyCreations
@MariesScrappyCreations Год назад
Yes. I used to pre-wash absolutely everything, although I don't do that anymore. The one exception to that rule is anything that goes into a quilt HAS to be pre-washed. If I don't pre-wash and dry it, I have no idea how much it will shrink in comparison to the other fabrics in the quilt, which could end up ruining all my hard work. Plus, some colors will run, and that's best taken carecof by pre-washing, too. That's my outlook on it, and I hope this helps you with your decision. At the beginning I said I don't wash everything anymore, and that's because sometimes I like to make tote bags and things like that and I use 100% cotton batting in them. I then like to wash and dry them and have the fabric crinkle up as it shrinks. It makes the bag that much prettier, in my opinion. It's also beautiful on a quilt, but when you're using a combination of different fabrics, they can shrink at different rates, which afain, is why quilting fabrucs are always washed. 🥰

You should use a 3x5 card and washi tape and make a bridge and your sewn scrapes would glide across behind you needle.....to bridge that gape between your machine and your table.

Hi Mary! I've thought of similar ways. You're so thoughtful to share with me! Another subscriber had suggested using those flexible, disposable cutting boards made from clear-ish plastic from the Dollar Tree, the ones that a lot of people use for patterns. I've hesitated on doing anything up until this point, but I may because it does get frustrating 😕

Can one use all kinds of fabric or should it only be cottons
@MariesScrappyCreations
@MariesScrappyCreations Год назад
Good question. I think it comes down to what people like to use. The one thing I would say is that if you’re going to use something other than cotton, you should be consistent with it. I would not mix different fabrics in the same block, because you would get different results when washing or using. I like to use strictly 100% cotton for my quilting, but I know there are people who do use other fabrics. I hope this helped answer your question and I hope you have a great weekend. Happy sewing!

@MariesScrappyCreations
@MariesScrappyCreations 2 года назад
Hello Claudette Thank you for watching and dropping by your comment. As far as your question goes, that is a difficult one to answer because it depends on so many factors. Most times, I sit and sew a pile of crumbs together in sets of 2 and then I sit with that pile and sew sets of 2 together into sets of 4, and so on, and so on. When I need to make just a block ir two, I tend to use larger crumbs and sew them together in one sitting. Personally, if my crumbs are all ironed and by my side, I could probably sew those 2 blocks in under an hour.

That's true, but working I'm filming and teaching within the constraints of a video and I figured it was easier to show people using the shapes that I did. If I made the video much longer, people wouldn't watch it at all. I do use other shapes when I'm not teaching the method. Happy sewing!

Thanks Marie for your video today. I like your process of putting together a crumb block. It looks like a faster process than some I've seen. Think I'll do it this way the next time I sew some scraps. All of the scrap blocks I do are 10", that way I find I can use them up in projects. I keep a plastic project case that I just keep my 10" finished blocks in so I can always have something handy when I need it. Since I started this process a few years ago I use up these 10"blocks more than I ever did before. When the project box get low I make up more scrap blocks. I also like making strip blocks with foundation paper. I love, love, love scraps!!!

Thank you for this video. I have learned a lot from watching how you put them together. I used some very small pieces when I made some crumb blocks, and I think that is why I didn’t enjoy it so much. I am going to try them this way, I think I will enjoy it much better. Blocks are beautiful.

Hi Kim! I’m happy that you found my video helpful. Many times, I’ve sewn with very tiny pieces, but it is very time-consuming. I chose larger pieces for this tutorial, thinking that for beginners, it would be best to try the slightly larger pieces. But, I have swapped many crumb blocks with other quilters and some people use larger pieces than what I did and there are people who use much smaller. It’s up to us what we prefer to use. Go with whatever makes you happy and comfortable. Happy sewing!

The crumb blocks are very, very nice. Thank you for teaching us your way, everyone makes theirs differently but similarly. If that made any sense, I hope it did. I use smaller pieces and longer strips. I think I'm going to use larger pieces in the future. You have to figure out what size works for you. It can change and that's OK. I'm learning how to not bring my perfectionism into my quilting. Lol. :)
@MariesScrappyCreations
@MariesScrappyCreations 2 года назад
That’s true, Amanda. We all have to use what works for us. When I’m not filming, I use much smaller pieces, as well as different shapes of pieces. I also use a lot of thin strips to sew those bits of pieces onto. But for filming purposes, as well as thinking about people who are beginners at crumb piercing, I figured it was best to film with a lot of squares and rectangles shapes

@MariesScrappyCreations
@MariesScrappyCreations 2 года назад
Hey Nanni! Well you know, for a tutorial, I tend to do things a little differently than what I actually do when I'm by myself. But I really wanted to show the process for the beginners. Normally, I just sit with my hands in the scrap bucket and just keep sewing and rarely do I get up to iron or pin. But when I first started crumbing, this is exactly how I did it. That being said, there are times where I will plan my crumbs, especially if I want it to look a certain way for a pillow or a special gift. Yes, people are so kind. I made the wish list, and then I had someone last night send me a gift card to my email which was very sweet. She also mentioned that some crafters use what's called "buy me a coffee", it's similar to Patreon. I might look into that, too. People are very giving, and it's a very humbling experience to realize that you've touched people's lives. I get too emotional if I talk about it, but you know what I'm saying. Thank you, sweet friend 😘

Hi Christine! Tanks for telling me about her. I do know that people use tiny, tiny scraps and for me, as long as I can use my quarter inch seam and then still see a little bit of fabric, I'll use them. But since there's a quarter inch out of each side, if I use anything smaller than 3/4 of an inch, it doesn't even show. Thank you for watching and for dropping by to comment! Have a great day.

Yes, I've watched her for many years. She used to live here in Maine and has recently moved. The thing I was explaining in my other comment is that if I had a piece of fabric that was half an inch wide and I sew it with my 1/4 inch seams on both sides, there is no fabric to show. That's why I only save things that are 1" and above. Everybody likes different things I suppose.
