Great idea. I am still reorganizing my new art space, and I am planning an area for "do aheads" like these. It will be like my personal shop for covers and ephemera when I get back to journal making full time. You make life so much easier. I really don't know what we crafters would do without you.

I'll bet the Stainz by Patty Pockets would work as an aging medium on those covers, too. I just ordered a couple more (of the colors this time) and can hardly wait to use them. I was just organizing my tissue paper yesterday so those would be great for this use. I bet rice paper would work for this application - I make my own. One could also use the white envelopes as bases or paint the manilla ones if they wanted a lighter base. Thanks, Gayle!

I love this idea, I bam a newbie and never sure if I should do pockets, signatures, tags, whatever , first. I get so frustrated so do nothing. These envelopes seem so much easier than using old boxes or cutting cardstock. After watching this, I have one journal cover finished and ideas for more. Thank you

Always great ideas! I just entered the junk journal world last summer and started binge watching your RU-vid videos. It’s great to see your enthusiasm and willingness to share. I found a 1918 music book at a thrift shop but need your advice on how to give myself permission to use it. How does one get over the guilt of taking apart a “piece of history” and folding it into a journal? I could copy it but then my journal won’t have authentic vintage pages. And, if I do start copying the items, I will have a collection of items gathering space. I even feel like I am going to destroy history or some “valuable” piece of vintage or antique item. What a conundrum! I would appreciate any words of wisdom you may share. Thank you.

Oh, I so understand your dilemma! Being a reader and lover of vintage and history, I have struggled with the same conflict. I do scan some things that I feel are “irreplaceable” or that I know I’ll want to use multiple times. But then, I buy books, including music books, specifically for using in my journals. Because that is their purpose, I have an easier time using them. I often read the vintage books before using them in a journal. Also, I try to use books that are one step away from the garbage from thrift stores, the dollar store, garage and estate sales. I also look at it as though I’m multiplying the joy by using, for instance an Edith Holden book, in 50 journals instead of it being one book. 50 people get to enjoy the beautiful pages instead of one person. It’ll take some time, but you’ll find what makes you comfortable. I hope that helps! ❤️

I have the same problem. I have two vintage music books that are falling apart. I did scan the double page. But I also am having trouble cutting into them. I recently bought some small very old poetry books. I have yet to examine them well but I just have a love of books. They are precious to me!

I don’t really have a problem tearing up books, I don’t know why because I know a lot of people do, but if it’s anything that you think in the slightest bit could be valuable look it up because I did that. I bought a book for $2 at an estate sale just because I was going to use the covers and I decided to look it up and I sold it for $450 on eBay so, if you have any idea that it might be valuable, if it’s signed, if it’s a first edition just do a quick search online and then tear into it. One way to think about tearing into them is that you are saving them. A local used bookstore where I live went out of business during the Covid lockdown. She tried to get rid of all the books, she called all the other used bookstores, she tried libraries, and got rid of some but ended up just posting a picture of the dumpster in the parking lot of her store filled to the brim with books and told everybody to just come and get them before it rained and ruined them. So by tearing them up and using them in art you’re saving them from a worse fate.

I love this technique of making covers and will be trying it soon. I use my favorite Mary Englebreit teacup and saucer that I picked up at a thrift store when mod podging. I had such a big bottle I couldn’t get to the bottom, so I started pouring it into the teacup to use. The cup works great because I can hold it by the handle when working, and rest my brush in the saucer as I work. Then when I’m done I can pour the excess back into the bottle and rinse everything off.

Yayyyy collaging stuff... I must be in a watching collage mood, coz I'm really enjoying it. I love those corners too... I keep hunting for those here in nz, but can't find them.... Will keep looking. If you didn’t want the orange background showing through you can paint the envelope first…. I painted one grey and used gray tissue to make an elephant looking journal, I think it came out pretty good. I loved the butterflies cover. Maybe if we painted the envelope white the colors of the tissue would stay truer.

Thank you Gayle I love these type of journal covers. You are right they would be easier and faster to do. I am definitely trying some of these as I have all of the supplies on hand. I did prefer the heavier tissue because you can see the design more clearly. The vintage Ladies tissue was so transparent that the brown envelope detracted from the images. Perhaps more plain tissue underlay would solve this or maybe the images will look different after they dry. I probably shouldn't make this comment as I have no experience. I enjoyed it all. Hugs.

You can get white and sometimes manilla colored envelopes. Check the office section in Walmart, dollar stores, office supply stores or Amazon. Another option is to use white cardstock cut to size just be careful folding it that it doesn't crack. Hope this helps 😊

Good plan to get all these done. I do okay with journals until I get to the front of the cover focal point and then I hit a wall. I think I’m probably overthinking it all but maybe you could do a video of making focal points on the covers with stuff we have. I know I don’t have extra money to buy some of the padded hearts and those things from the amazing Etsy shops all the time so maybe some Gayle advice will help me break that wall down!

Found several Holtz tissue papers last week while looking for something else. 🙄 Rice papers I use, but forget the tissue papers for some reason. Actually, the reason is called “out of sight, out of mind”. 😆 Enjoyed this. Will save for later. Thank you! Oh! Have you tried the Antique Matte Mod Podge? I bought by mistake ages ago, but have been using it lately (on days it’s not so humid here) and have grown to like it.

I wonder if ModPodge would work in an old-style pointy ketsup bottle so you could squirt it where you want it easier? Kinda like Art Glitter Glue. You could cap it with those knitting needle protectors. I may try this.

I did some of these from one of your old videos. But do you make different focal points ahead of time. Especially if you know the kinds of journals that you like to make. Or do you do thé focal points as you need them n I would like to see more ideas on focal points. That would help.. I think I wrote that right. I would like to do some more mens journals. So maybe a bunch of fronts. The editor.. typewriter. Old photography, western style, weather, railroads, fishing, etc. Mens are hard to do.

This is definitely an easy way to do covers. Are your tissue papers a heavy duty tissue, it looks thicker than the thin stuff you can usually find.
