@@Chandwell lol yes I did. It’s amazing. When I get the space and time for my layout I will you use your techniques the best I can. I have been in the graphic design field for 20 years and will use my own software to design my buildings in like you do in Inkscape
Truly marvellous Michael, it really is. The slope on which the build sits, although slights adds so much realism. The fire exits are brilliant as well - I can almost smell the beautiful aroma inside! And the clocktower with the illumination - wow. A great video, many thanks for posting, Ian
Hahah. You really can smell those fire escapes can’t you!? I am over the moon with how well the slope worked out. It is very subtle but when you get your head right down beside it, it looks so real. Sadly the camera doesn’t pick up on it very well. Episode 3 in this series will show how I made it.
So excited to see your clock tower! It is truly magnificent Michael. The research you went through to get the design right for your station really paid off. Can’t wait to see the next video. Thanks for sharing. Roy.
What a stunning build! It just looks so right and I don't think I've seen a scratchbuit station to match it -definitely exhibition quality. With the station completed, you must be nearing the end of the layout construction. Looking forward to next week and thank you for posting. Stay well.
Thank you Paul. I am really pleased with how it has turned out. I agree that it works for the feel of Chandwell. The layout is far, far, from complete. There is still a lot to do. I have a whole street of shops, a high street, the industrial buildings along the canal, the back scene behind the station, the far corner, and the houses above the tunnels yet to do. I think there is at least 6 more years of work ahead of me! Michael.
I had model railways when "I was a lad" as they say. Since then my hobbies have included sailing (mainly in the Irish Sea), large scale radio controlled aircraft, playing in several R&B groups and renovating a 19thC French farmhouse. Now happily retired I was looking for a new hobby - and was I inspired when I chanced across this video. Absolutely stunning, with attention to detail which brought back memories of building aircraft for scale competitions. So a rejuvenated hobby combined with a wonderful childhood memory. Many thanks for this and I will start watching from episode 1 for ideas and methods to build my first N Gauge train set. Brilliant. Stay safe, kind regards
We've watched quite a few channels as we get back into modeling. Each person puts their soul into it as their skill and patience allows, and it's unfair to criticise the less able. But this - this is like Canaletto has become a modeller. It is impressive, exquisite and surprising. Your work is quite shockingly good.
I'm lost for words! What a marvellous job. Which is more than can be said of the Chandwell tourist board: "Chandwell - A lovely place to leave." "Chandwell - Gateway to the moors" "Chandwell - It's not as grim as you think it is."
Hahahaha yes! The Visit Chandwell Tourist Board sometimes struggle to paint Chandwell in a glowing light. But they work with what they have, and they try to do a good job! :) Michael
Whenever I need some inspiration, I simply watch one, two, three..... of your video's!! It just makes me want to get back into the model room and get on with my own layout.. I really love the attention to detail on your layout.. It's the little things that make the layout.. somehow those little things, pull everything together to create the result. Love it. :) Craig,
Just stumbled across your channel and I am absolutely stunned by the incredible fine detail and quality of the builds. Absolute quality, and a very enjoyable video
Thank you Gerald! I am pleased to have you along with me. I hope that you enjoy my future videos as I build Chandwell. If you'd like to get a feel for what the layout is, then I suggest this video, made by the Visit Chandwell Tourist Board in 1993: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QpDJuWLW0no.html :) All the best, Michael.
That’s some incredible work....😯 A lot of dedicated work has really paid off, very clever with the design & execution. All those details like the posters & graffiti that make it personal to you make it even more unique. Well done 👏👏🙂
Wow! You have really outdone yourself with this Michael. I love all of the small details and the finished station looks fantastic. I’m looking forward to the next installment 🙂
Wow ! I'm lost for words Michael. Stupendous bit of scratch building. You have captured the feel of a station which is perhaps past its glory days superbly. The buildings just ooze with character. Perfect length of video too boot !!! Cheers Euan
Thank you Euan! Yes, I think the atmosphere in the building looks great. And I agree that I think the shorter video running times are working quite well. Michael.
Excellent! Your efforts and that of other RU-vid layout Manchester Piccadilly are amongst the best N gauge (or otherwise) models currently being shown. The attention to detail, and precision are staggering and show what can be achieved in such a small scale!
What an amazing construction in cardboard with amazing detail and colours, it's a masterpiece of modelling. Hope I wasn't the only person to pick up the very decent whisky at 5:07 too! Hope you had a nice wee dram!
Hi Michael, another masterpiece production. You have got to be claiming a well deserved first place for us N gauge modellers. Lots of you’re work is above and beyond the expected level of detail. Amazing work again, love it, very well done from me... All the best, Chris
Fantastic attention to detail as usual Michael. That really looks amazing! I almost want to visit Chandwell😳...almost!!!😜 Looking forward to the upcoming videos, Andrew👍🙂
I absolutely love N scale, but it never really holds up to close inspection. Chandwell does! It has absolute verisimilitude down to the tiniest granular detail. It photographs like a fullscale actual place. So impressed. Well done! Looking forward to more.
Wow! Absolutely bloody marvellous! I can’t get over how much patience you must have to painstakingly add all of the detail especially on the back wall that can hardly be seen. Your skills are legendary and should you ever decide to sell Chandwell (lol)............well done Michael
Hi Phil. Thank you so much for your kind words. If I were to sell Chandwell it would be very, very expensive. It is firmly attached to a four-bedroom semi-detached house so I’d have to chuck that in with the sale. 😀
A beautifully crafted building Michael. Fantastic attention to detail as has become your trademark. To build it on an incline as well took it to another level. Top work my friend.
I think the reactions in the comments to this video show just how high quality this modelling is Michael. The finished effect is simply stunning. The clear description of the steps by step approach works really well. The clock tower really sits well and the means of lighting it works well also. I am looking forward to the next two parts of the build to see how they were done. Stephen
Thank you Stephen. I’m blown away by the comments on this video and I am really pleased with how well the clock tower has turned out. All that planning has really paid off I think.
Michael, this is on the same level as Tony North Eastern’s station build, it’s amazing and what an inspiration, I can’t wait to really get into scratch building. You have captured that look and feeling of a run down BR building.Really looking forward to the next episode cheers mate, John
Another brilliant video Michael. I love how that station is coming together - and its the attention to the details on front, backs, sides that set this out as a stunner. My biggest regret is this layout is not going to be on the exhibition circuit - as it can stand with the best of them! Looking forward to the next part.
Magnificent work Michael 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Chandwell now has a centre piece befitting its former glory😱 as always I love the the graffiti 😍 but you have really managed to capture that tired B.R. look with aplomb 😎
@@Chandwell deservedly so. I‘m not just a model railway enthusiast (albeit gauge 1 live steam) but am also an architect, which is why I can appreciate not just the amount of work you put into your hobby and can understand how you view the world you want to create. The end result is truly stunning. Take care, Philip.
@@flippop101 It means a lot if an architect is watching and not hiding his face behind his hands! I know nothing of true architectural practices, and just follow a kind of "model what you see" process. Building Chandwell has really opened my eyes to the architecture around me that I'd never really appreciated before. In fact, making Chandwell has made every walk through any town or city far more interesting. I find myself spotting things I'd like to make, or wondering how and why things are the way they are. It is fascinating.
Really, really good Michael. But I have to say, Chandwell is a lot grimmer than the Tourist Information Office Posters suggest. Your modelling skills and detail bring out grimness that are award winning, should you wish to enter. 😂🤣😂🤣😂 And all this in N scale. Your attention to detail is commendable. ✔✔✔
Wow wow WOW! I can’t wait for the next two installments. But, really, I think the question everyone wants answered is, just how much Weetabix do you eat?
Blimey!! That amazing mate! love the small details, specially the cafe's signs grammar error. Beautiful architecture. Will definitely be watching more of your videos. Where is the location of your station?
Thank you! The station is based on a mix of Chester, Sheffield Midland, Sheffield Victoria, and Darlington. It's my own design. Chandwell itself is imagined to be somewhere near Leeds and Bradford. Michael
Another enjoyable episode! I really appreciate your methodical approach at scratch-building structures. It has totally changed the way I look at building them. Also, your series on using Inkscape to design your building has given me tremendous insight on the use and value of this excellent software! Thanks. PS - Have you considered adding a 5-10W diode laser engraver/cutter to your tool/equipment inventory to do all of the cutting that you currently do by hand? Just curious...
Thank you! I do sometimes ponder a cutter of some type. But I have such a limited budget I can always think of a million other things I would rather have, at least while my eyesight is good, my hands are steady, and I don’t have arthritis. I do get an amazing sense of satisfaction when I remember the hours of cutting by hand when I look at the layout. I think a cutter or a 3D printer would perhaps dilute that sense of satisfaction, so for now.... I’m sticking scalpel. 😀😀👍🏻
Thank you! I am pleased you liked this. Part Two will be published later today (5pm UK time) so keep an eye out. I saw your other comment about the penny on my Pub video but it is not there any longer. Not sure if you deleted it? But anyway, tonight’s video includes a 20p piece to show the size of the station.
Thanks for a well put together video showing us how to model a station building in card. I think you might consider making the artwork available online along the lines of Scalescenes.
Since the texture is Scalescenes, I would not be able to sell that. But otherwise yes, maybe one day I could make my drawings available. There would be a heck of a lot of work to make them commercially viable though.
