+Marc Sins I think he had a great following not necessarily the mainstream audiences perhaps, but he certainly wasn't shoved under the rug as he performed on a number of t.v. shows.
I left my office and was driving down the street in Solana Beach in 1999 and saw on the marquee at the Belly Up Tavern "Tonight - Screamin' Jay Hawkins", but I had plans so I passed it by and been kicking my self ever since. You see, it had been 41 years earlier that I last saw him perform: as the only white kid in the audience in the Uptown Theater in West Philly (it was another time then and most of my friends were black so; never felt out of place). I still remember him coming on-stage from the right, wearing a red-lined black cape and carrying a long Gris-Gris stick with a skull on the end! Everybody was absolutely still but by the middle of the song (What song? What song do you think!) we were all up shouting... Everybody that came after him, from James Brown on, owe this man a debt 'cause he broke down the door for performance-art-meets-R-'n-B -meets-Rock-'n-roll.
A one off! Brilliant voice. Unique artist and very very weird! Always had excellent musicians with him. Definitely didn't take himself too seriously. Love him !
In my eyes, he's not only one of the greatest Blues singers, but perhaps (probably) the father of the Psycho-Billy movement.... He's a demolishing singer, and his understanding of appropriate screaming is beyond comparison... A fucking genius - pure and simple.
Wikipedia called him possibly the world's first "shock rocker." After seeing a couple performances of him doing "I Put a Spell on You"- (1956) I agree! He predates everybody I can think of, like Alice Cooper, etc.
He definitely is the daddy of horror rock u never seen anyone else with bones in there noses using voodoo dolls n crazy clothes back than he was wild he even said he thinks he has 50 children he must been getting hella puss
Walking history! Good storyteller and one of the most original musicians. Those screams would have lifted our diseased minds in this covid19 time. One scream and all fears would disappear.
I had never heard of him before. Until I saw 9-year-old Angelina Jordan's tribute "I put a spell on you" on YT. She paid tribute to him with her version and was closer to the original than any other cover. He deserved this song to be ranked in the top 500 of all time.
This dude is wild as Fuck .... he sure is is this is what I was this is what I was as younger man a barbarian all day long you had that you had to watch out for your daughter and wives and they loved it and they all loved it
I SIMPLY LOVE HIM...GREAT AT 360°!!! I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY I DIDN'T DISCOVERED THIS MAN EARLIER...I MEAN I UNDERSTAND BUT MAKE ME TIREEEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDDD AND WEEAAKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!
Maravilloso artista!!! Un cantante original y con una voz privilegiada. Sus interpretaciones aon simplemente sensacionales. Me fascino su Estilo y su forma de cantar... sencillamente un grande!!!
I saw him live in 1985 in a venue on Sunset Strip in L.A, He came out in a coffin with skulls, canes etc. There were lots of young babes in the audience up the front of the stage, absolutely captivated by him and his presence. I called my buddy in London from the payphone in the club so he could hear him as we were both huge fans and before mobiles! I remember thinking that he could take his pick of the girls in the club and who knows he might have. Great performer.
His a legend,a gifted artistes, he combines great music, voice, meaningful lyrics with satyric taste and comedy acts.I would be a good member to the places he performed.Much respect for you sir🤘🤘🤘

he answers a lifelong conundrum in this great tune... no sorry he fails to answer it.... pure brilliant... cause there is no answer ... we all have our opinions but the magic of the lyrics is that the situation is the pivot of the song
