@@gerardspringer8576 And I don’t think they were QUITE the band that the latter two were (I just don’t really ‘get’ Nirvana… I mean, they were good, but each of their members was ruthlessly smoked by members of other bands, and I’m not as enamored of Cobain’s songwriting as everyone demands I be). They were, however, an absolutely fantastic show and their non-single album material was some of the most interesting and varied of them all back then. I’m a huge fan of Trees and Meat Puppets (numerous others), bands that undeservedly slipped through the cracks of the supernova that was the ‘90s.
This is a sick version with Paul and boys in support. I read yesterday that these guys were in a brawl in asbury park the night before with a bunch of meatheads. You can see the lead singers black eye and their drummer is mia due to fucking up his shoulder. Classic. Love the Pete Townsend windmills the guitarist is throwing. This was an amazing band and sweet oblivion is incredible top to bottom.
The book jacket mentioned something about a notorious Letterman performance, but I haven't gotten too far yet. I'm only a few chapters in and already thinking "how can this get any more harrowing?" and also knowing that it's definitely going to 😬
Here (again) because of Sing Backwards and Weep. Lol I've seen this vid before but never noticed the drummer wasn't their drummer- who had hurt his arm in a melee the night before
I miss it,they were originally like that so they didn’t have to replace the shelves that used to hold vinyl records in stores. Man I miss record stores
It's strange to think that between enlisting Steve Ferrone to play drums for them at this gig, then collabing with both George Drakoulias and Benmont Tench that there's a weird indirect link between the Trees and the Heartbreakers.
Love how the guitarists is just manhandling his guitar during the solo. Kind of reminds me of the very end of Texas chainsaw massacre where the dude is running down the street swinging the chainsaw around. Lol.
On second thought, upon reading through the comments, I had forgotten about the infamous Screaming Trees New York City nightclub brawl of '92. THAT'S why Ferrone is there instead of Martin.
Thanks so much for posting this. I just read the chapter of this in Mark’s book, was awesome to be able to see the black eye and the food fight referenced.
from the book "While the Conner brothers dug in, I took the opportunity to wing some food at Lee’s head, accidentally catching an unamused David Letterman with the shrapnel. "
I saw them at Lollapalooza in 94 or 95. they were great. I thought they were going to be world famous but never really heard from them on mainstream after that. Either way they kick ass.
Did you hear the distant cry Calling me back to my sin Like the one you knew before Calling me back once again I nearly, I nearly lost you there And it's taken us somewhere I nearly lost you there Let's try to sleep now Drag me far enough to know I'm blind every mile that you burn There's a rider that's fallen and It's clear there's no time to return I nearly, I nearly lost you there And it's taken us somewhere I nearly lost you there Well let's try to sleep now Did you hear the distant lie Calling me back to my sin Like the one you knew before Calling me back once again I nearly, I nearly lost you there And it's taken us somewhere I nearly lost you there Well let's try to sleep now I nearly lost you there I nearly lost you I nearly lost you there I nearly lost you there I nearly lost you there Oh yeah, nearly lost you there
Great performance! I know Dave wasn't feeling the food fight. Got to see them once when Uncle Anesthesia was out. Mark was like a cross between Jim Morrison & A hard rock Tom Waits! RIP
Guys. You have to remember that RU-vid comments 13 years ago didn't appear in thread form. This is before Google bought RU-vid. It was different back then. Likely the comment he is replying to is long gone and probably contained the nword like every comment did back then. Lmao
No, that's not just Letterman, they were packaged like that in the late 80s- early 90s. They were called CD longboxes and the jewel cases would fit inside the box. This was because the record companies were afraid that the smaller jewel cases would not have enough visibility in stores and because the cds had to fit in the same rack space as was previously used for 12 inch records.
GlassPike u r my hero!!!!!!!!! Thats it, that's the song!!!!!!!! Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've never heard of these guys, I was actually starting 2 think it was done by a local band, cuz the radio station that used 2 play it used 2 mix in local bands in their rotation, but oh thank you soooo much!!!!
Mark talks about the show in his book. Apparently an unamused David Letterman didn’t take too kindly to getting pelted from shrapnel from the all out food fight that began to take place moments after the show went to commercials. Phenomenal book.
Oh yeah, back in the day when bands were forced to play with Paul and the band! (most hilarious example of that was iggy pop singing eat or be eaten on the show) I remember seeing this on tv Pretty sure I had already purchased the cd by the time I saw this. Thanks for uploading.
jmp352 I don't think Paul played with Alice In Chains when they did 'Again' and Layne was all fkd up....... but I'm gonna go watch and let you know: ok, just watched it, the band is sort of playing with AIC, but doesn't look like Paul is playing anything.., why would he...
Kev Arnold Valid point there about the keyboards -still a hilarious video nonetheless. Willie Nelson also had to play with Paul and the band (All the bands did until Dave moved to the Ed Sullivan theater) I just always thought it was a strange practice
as if the screaming trees didnt kick enough ass already, they get extra street cred points for having a big black dude as a drummer! fuckin awesome, thanks for posting!
Actually that wasn’t their drummer. The Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin broke his arm in a barroom brawl in New Jersey the night before. The “big black dude” is actually Steve Ferrone who was a member of Paul Scheffer’s band on Dave Letterman’s show. Steve Ferrone would go on to play drums for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers for almost 20 years starting in late 1994 replacing the legendary Stan Lynch. The lead singer for The Screaming Trees (Mark Lonegan) can be seen here with a black eye as he was also part of the brawl the night before this show. Knowing that they don’t actually have any person of color in the band do they still have “cred”? Or do you have to have someone with dark skin to make you cool? 🤷♂️
i remember recording this on a VCR. apparently they got in a bar brawl in NYC the night before, therefore the black eye. i saw them a dozen times in the late '80s and throughout the '90s. they were nuts.
That's very lucky. I never got to see Nirvana or AIC with Layne(I got to see them with Duvall 6 years ago and it was surprisingly great). I did to see Soundgarden on their final tour(at the time) and once last year. Pearl Jam I saw once on Halloween 2009,that show was the last ever event at the Spectrum arena in Philadelphia before closing down. I would trade all of that to see Alice and Nirvana in the 1990s. Good talking to you.
My dad and I were talking about this band the other day. We were talking about how after the grunge movement music has come back around to the stage where no one is innovating anymore - just imitating. It makes me sad, but also kind of exited to see what's going to start happening in a decade's time :)
@MCDG1:A lot of bands are doing the three guitarist thing now to add more harmonies, some play in a different tuning to add more to the song etc.Iron Maiden does this,Great Canadian band called "Big Wreck" does an excellent job with three guitars.
I remember this period of Letterman. He had lots of great bands on his show but they all had to play with the house band. It was wonder if Paul somehow convinced the Corp. heads to feature his band with each visiting band. Such a bummer. Screaming Trees were one of my favorite bands in the early 90s.
I loved those old CD cardboard jackets like Letterman shows in the beginning. I had a ton of those cut out and stapled around the top of my walls around my room when I was 13 in 1989. Seemed pretty stupid that they came in those (huge boxes), I guess they were worried about theft. Back then cassette tapes also came with a long ass plastic thing that made it ridiculous to stick in you pocket so I guess it somewhat worked. The CD things back then were awesome though, they were little posters you could put on your walls.
Holy shit, it's Jim Morrison with longer hair and a tracheotomy! No offense, I like this band, so far, it's the first thing I've heard from them, but I'm generally impressed.
i will....thanks! just finishing "Everybody Loves Our Town" right now, and there's some great stuff in there too....good Lanegan stories for sure. miss this era now more than ever.....who knew it would get so awful in the 21st Century??
Can i just say that there are loadsa great bands that had loadsa great songs like the melvins, mudhoney, alice in chains, sonic youth an the great grungists of the 90's and we shud hav respect 4 the great bands that every ignores 4 the likes of pearl jam and nirvana
DAMN, a black eye! That's so fucking rock and roll. Just like Robby Krieger of the Doors was sporting on their Smothers Brothers "Touch Me" and "Wild Child" performances.
