Someone told me I’m trying to give my son a 90s childhood in 2024. Not sure she meant it as a compliment but I’m taking it as one. My son spends hours outside swimming , collecting bugs and riding bikes. I refuse to let Tv and screens steal his childhood.

Can you explain more about the “quiet time” you mentioned? Sounds like a great idea!

Kayla, I just wanted to say that I love this video idea and I’m planning to watch these while I force myself to fold laundry as well!! You should def make them as long as possible because lord knows I have plenty of laundry to fold🥲🤣

I just have to say - you’re my favorite. Lol as fellow mama and believer …. I just feel like you and Joe have such a great balance of living in the world, but not of the world if that makes sense! You see so many extreme angles on social media whether it’s health, screen time, modesty, homesteading, etc the list goes on. But I feel like you and your family are SO relatable in such a real way. We still have differences, my kids do go to day care , while my husband and I have full time careers but even so, I just relate to you all so much and the balance that you’ve struck between things like this - allowing screen time but boundaries, limits and monitor that gives me confidence as a momma and not feeling shame about what I do allow -- so thank you for being a voice of reason in the crazy world 🤪❤ it’s been awesome to see you, Joe, and the kids grow and change, go through different seasons and the spiritual growth while still being so real and not totally changing personalities 😊 anyway, just wanted to say that I appreciate you and your content!

This was so refreshing for me! As a homeschool mom of 3 kiddos 6 and under as well and a husband that works a ton, I utilize screen time for school and if I need a minute to get something done. I have so much guilt even with the little screen time we use because I feel like a lot of moms I watch are either completely screen free or basically that so thank you for this honesty! Love you and your content!

I noticed a huge difference in behavior when my 4 year old was on his iPad vs the tv. Tv he is fine but he would have tantrums when we would have to get off the iPad. Now he only uses the iPad for long car trips.

I find that it’s the type of content that my daughter watches that makes her more or less whiny/have more bad behavior. She becomes more of a zombie and can get crazier when she watches more overstimulating videos, especially when I try to take it away. I hate giving her access to RU-vid because it’s just the Wild West of random children acting bratty with overuse of sound effects. And some of the cartoons are strange as well, I pretty much avoid it at all costs unless I can put it on the tv and control what she’s watching.

I feel the same way! Especially freshly postpartum with my second, I gave my first basically unlimited access to his iPad and I thought I put in enough parental controls but things would slip thru the cracks with RU-vid kids. Eventually I deleted that app all together. Now his iPad has streaming apps and educational games but we even cut off iPad access all together and now opt for tv time instead.

Just a tip if you’re ever interested, it’s a little hard to find but it’s there in the RU-vid settings (kids app) - you can actually set limits to ONLY allow what you choose. It’s way better than the block feature. Because for example, if I saw something I didn’t want my son to watch, I could block that video or that channel but of course due to algorithms other similar stuff would show up. So once I learned this other feature, I was so happy. So I was able to go through RU-vid content and specifically chose either channels or specific videos he can watch and that’s all he can see. So it’s helped ALOT in avoiding his having access to the “wild Wild West”.

I love this video, such a nice way to approach screentime. Could you perhaps share what you think is appropriate shows gor your kids to watch. I basically just know about Mrs Rachel and dont really know kids shows.

We do screens. We don't do tablets in the room and no tvs in the room. School is 100 screen free so usually on weekdays there's nothing and weekends are also structured in some ways that it doesn't happen often.. I love balance in everything.. all or nothing can be stressful in a way it doesn't need to be..

Very similar here with my 2&4 year old. TV in the living room, no iPads, nothing in any of our bedrooms. We have final say. As a SAHM who averages 13 hours a day I don’t mind a couple hours at all

Our boys are currently 2,5 and 1 year old and we managed zero screen time until now…(we let the older one video call with friends, grandparents and watch family photos, videos!) I find it easier because if we had screen time he would always ask for it, I’m sure 😅 I would love to have movie nights soon but at the moment he has no interest, I think because he’s not so used to the tv…

I definitely put attention what my kids watch and try to find educational shows, my kids are little still but learning very fast, my son learned his abcs at 2 years 2 months a to z recognized them in books and anywhere he saw them. The other day I was looking for something different and this cartoon called “vida the vet” on Netflix, looked like a very innocent cartoon. The first time I played it this Tiger looked kind of different to me, started researching and found out is a transgender tiger. I was like “too bad the cartoon seemed cute”. Kids are learning very fast, they get used to things and then just in their brain normalize stuff so I agree to have all the control on what they watch. Tv also helps me to entertain my kids, have them 24/7 no family or friends where I live and I’m pregnant right now so, definitely need some entertainment here and there!

Kayla’s kids seem to handle screens really well but just to say there is clear evidence screens affect how children’s brains develop. So be weary.

You say how you limit your kids from screens/devices yet you vlog them. Children emulate what they see their parents do. You are so reliant on your devices for your work but this isnt a job this is your life and your family. Would love to see a video on what you think about the amount of parents vlogging their kids and the negatives/ positives associated with that.

You won’t let your six year old watch a show about unicorns? Damn. That’s so sad and controlling. 😢

If they are not watching tv much as it is , it makes sense to limit shows that are not educational or real
