@H2o Mechanic - You certainly need to get your dad in your videos more and more! My dad drilled water wells and did pump work for almost 40 years and I worked with him in my younger years until I graduated HS. My dad operated cable tool machines, mainly Bucyrus-Erie 22W & Bucyrus-Erie 20Ws. He retired from drilling in the mid 80s and continued doing pump work for a few years until he had a stroke and was unable to work and passed away in 1997. I don’t have any pictures of him drilling but I do have many memories. Get all of the pictures and videos that you can of your dad because once he’s gone he’s gone!!! I had a cable tool drill rig engraved into the back of his head stone at his grave. I’m so glad I found your channel and would like to know your name.

It is always great to have someone at the supply house that has been in the field. They are more knowledgeable than someone that has been brought in from high school to be nothing more than a parts locator. I am a field tech in HVAC and I have more knowledge than those guys from high school and they learn more from me. I even have to locate parts on the web when the supply houses say they can't get the part. I usually find my part in some obscure corner of the web of a business that lists it and are surprised they still had it and willing to sell it for less if they can move the last 2 or 3 they will have left in the box. I always thought screen liner was bigger slots with cheese cloth over it. Thanks for the info.

I like the idea of the gravel in the casing, how do you know that the center pipe is centered inside the casing.??? If it's not centered won't sand work it's way into the inner pipe ?? Just a thought...

At the point where the screen is at the pipe most likely still has a roughly even gap on all sides. Cause it’s so long him pushing the top up against the other pipe won’t move much further down.

In South Dakota we always had to put a screen at the bottom of the well casing and then gravel pack with gravel. You need the right kind of gravel to make it work.

Higher volume irrigation , and commercial wells use a 12” to 16” casing with the screened sections only in a good aquifer and then gravel packed which acts as a filter and to keep the the screen centered I used wooden spacers wired around the screen about ever 15 ft to insure a even gravel pack. When gravel packing construct a device to meter a constant flow of gravel pack at a slow rate to prevent bridging and voids, on larger 16” wells 350+ deep would use many tandem truck loads using a 28” drill bit thus a large gravel pack area between 28” drill hole and 16” casing. When the well was started it was non stop to finish of gravel pack, no stopping at night, sometimes 25 hour operations. I enjoy your channel, good job

Nice vid. Got a question. My well was dug 160’. Static level is 44’, max output is at 89’ at 8-10 gpm. How deep would u put the pump. Btw, I just bought some quality products from H2O mechanic, pump & wire.
@h2omechanic
@h2omechanic 3 месяца назад
I'd set it at 100ft or 120ft max. The deeper you go, the more sediment issues you might face. If water enters at 89ft, setting the pump at 85ft would decrease sediment. But set it deeper to start with, if sediment is bad, you can pull it up as needed.

That's great information! It isn't every day that we can see a well get screened. I've seen the slotted pipe before. After about 12 or so years, my well started to get some grit coming up. It was enough that I was needing to clean out the Rusco spin-down filter on the line to my geothermal heat pump every few days. My pump man took a length of that screen pipe about 5 or 6 feet long, slid a fine filter sock over it, tied the open end of the sock shut and secured the whole thing over my pump. That took care of about 99% of the grit that was coming into my filter. Take care and God Bless.

I had my first well drilled two years ago and ended up with my wife and I setting the pump ourselves. Your videos explain a lot about some of the things you deal with and how you have to manage those things to make it a success. I find it very interesting. Is hydrofracking how you typically recover a well or are there other methods that are also useful? Just curious

Not being a driller, I would think that slotted pipe creates a bit of a restriction and as a result the gpm of the well would decrease. What percentage of gpm do you loose when using slotted pipe? Would also be interesting to know what the end gpm is when the pump gets installed. Thanks

Hello Phillip, I appreciate the videos. On this well, if I understand correctly, the solid pipe at the bottom is simply a foundation for the screen to set on. Where do you set the pump? Another thing that I don't quite understand. In drilling, exactly how do you know when you hit water?
@h2omechanic
@h2omechanic 3 месяца назад
The 6" pipe blocks out the upper dirt & goes into Bedrock. Hitting water we notice it by the sound of the hammer, the percussion changes for a few seconds, then the flow increases away from the water water/cuttings. In this case the pump will go at 100ft near the bottom of the screen

All wells here (the Netherlands) are screened. At the bottom comes a cap , only when the last meter or so is clay i don t use a cap , clay will close the bottom . Seems you didn t use a bottomcap , but you have 3 sections of normal pipe at the bottom , that will work Common slotted pipes are vertically slotted , gives a stronger pipe so you don t have to be so carefull . I m slotting my own pipe , a 125mm pipe with 0,5 mm slotts

I'm surprised you don't have some kind of jerry-rigged funnel for pouring the gravel in. I'd presume that dropping a foot of 4 inch pipe with a cap on it to plug the well so gravel doesn't go down it, then dropping a 12 inch to 6 inch reducer for air ducts on it would make your lives a lot easier in the rare situation where this occurs. Those duct reducers are like 15 dollars, and I'd assume you've got some scrap PVC segments around for the temporary plug on the main well pipe. If a jerry-rigged tool like that saves even 15 minutes of labor once, that pays for itself, and it looks like it'd save you more than that. If you want to go extra lazy, get a vibrator for concrete or something similar and you'll be able to buzz the stuff down the funnel faster than one guy can slice open bags and pour.

You can see where it goes into the ground at a high rate. When they abandoned the cistern they took off the casing and well seal. I have a quick question regarding wells over in the states. What happens if you drill a well say to 300’ @ 20GPM But you make a mistake and the well gets damaged. Which makes it unusable! Does that mean the client has to pay for a new well to be bored? The question made more sense in my head than being put to text. The reason I asked is because it you drill and the well is no good, then the client has to pay for the new well to be dug eg well is producing less than 3GPH?
