Screening the Porch of my Log Cabin | Smoked Black Bear Sandwiches

I finish the log siding on the side porch, close in the gable end and install the screens in the upper sections. Life at the off grid log cabin is very peaceful, the forest filled with the sounds of nature while Cali my golden retriever spends her days chasing squirrels and swimming in the pond. In the earthen oven in the forest kitchen, I slow smoke a black bear roast, shred it and put it on fresh fried bannock with homemade mozzarella cheese, hot peppers and green tomato chutney. For breakfast, I make coffee on the rocket stove in the outdoor kitchen and simmer oatmeal with dried blueberries and maple syrup from the maple trees on my land.

May God bless you all, gave support and comfort. Sometimes I catching myself asking to God: "Why lord so many good people fight so hard in their lives and when becomes the time to rest and really enjoy what you creat for us, these people suffer of so many fisical problems or (in the case of MY country Brazil) may still working, because the social money it's so low wich then barely can buy the medicines. Imagine spending money in travels or taking a home im more secured and beautiful places. It's simply out of question! Maybe one day, our land treat our elders with the right respect then deserve.

Holy cow man, I watched you in the beginning and I can’t believe how awesome the cabin turned out!! I rememebr waiting everyday for an upload of you building this cabin by yourself. Man, even the old Pioneers had a wife and kids to help build but you did it all by yourself. That is a certain level of manhood that I must obtain. I have craved this life for many years but it doesn’t happen overnight. You’ set a good example for all mankind and thank you for all the hard work that you’ve invested into this self reliance channel.

Yes, and it´s not only practical but beautiful too, impressive work, I admire good handcraft. I got addicted to those videos, it´s so relaxing for eyes and ears, great edited, and big thank you to the author for not putting a lot of music, it´s so fantastic to hear all the natural sounds. Step by step challenge by challenge, it is very inspirational to go back and watch your very early videos again and then see just how far you have come. You are building more than things you are always building character. You probably have moments thinking how do I make my next step, how am I going to get all this done, but you always seem to get through things, and then some. I thank you for sharing your life and journeys with us. I bet you remember your very first steps in the very beginning. It must be very rewarding for you to look back. I think about all this every day, and am trying to adopt a new attitude and outlook in life, sometimes it is easy to get complacent, but we grow with challenges, step by step, day by day.

I was watching and listening to the birds and nature, realizing how special and peaceful it would be to live where you live. No incessant leaf blowers, lawnmowers, hedgers, screaming kids, blasting music. Every time I leave my house, there is constant noise. It never seems to end. Can't sit by the pool and read a book in peace. You are blessed.

So enjoy watching you work. I remember when I added my porch, loved it. Ten years I added screens. 5 years later added marine vinyl so it would extend the fall. 5 years later added a fireplace. Hey shawn, my wife and I live in South Carolina. We found your channel and spent hours mesmerized watching your videos. I chop a lot of firewood myself, and found a guy that put a tire on top of the chopping block and bolted it down with a couple lag bolts. place your piece of wood inside the tire and start chopping, it doesn’t go to the ground. You just walk around and chop, It saves a lot of bending over and a lot of time. Keep the videos coming.

Fishing tip, if you put a worm or a lure on the hook and push it up to the top, then put sour dough bread dough by the bottom of the hook then cast it with a buoy were ducks are looking for fish you will catch one within 5 minutes 🎣

Love what you have achieved at the cabin. I have followed you from the beginning and to watch how your homestead has evolved is inspirational. I will even admit to buying one of your shirts and had it shipped to me in the UK. I totally love Ontario, in particular, Algonquin provincial park where I not only proposed to my wife but several years later celebrated my 50th Birthday. I long for the end of the virus restrictions so as to begin traveling again in the wider nature. Until then I will satisfy myself with mini, local adventures in the UK. An audio problem though while transfering the bear roast to the dutch oven barehanded. We almost certainly missed an ‘auch dangit’ right then and there in the audio track. 😉

Every moment is enjoyable. Cali digging to China was a treat, and the rare moment when Shawn swore because he cut a board too short...he IS human :-) That sandwich OMGosh, it took some work to make, but was worth it. This is the best channel on RU-vid. I even watch the ads (or let them play, anyway) to make sure you get your just reward for all the hard work. Be safe and happy, Shawn and Cali. Thank you Shawn James for sharing your experience with us. I remember working for a prominent barn builder company and that smell of fresh cut wood in the cool morning air and the birds chirping as you started your daily building experience and there was nothing like it. Slept like a baby every night and ate hardy. I miss that kind of work. Work is good

35:12 Shawn, have you thought of replacing this window with a door so you have direct access into your screen porch? You could use it for safe food storage in cold weather and you could put firewood there prior to bringing it into the cabin. It would make your space seem much larger!

I've been watching since day 1 of the recording of this cabin and let me tell you I've never been so impressed with someone's work like I am with you. Absolutely beautiful and peaceful place with birds chirping all the natural colors of Nature so impressive.
