@@personii thank you! And definitely go for it if you feel you're able to do it! I waited for several years because I felt I wasn't there yet, skill-wise
how about like 8 minute videos, just like this? these are perfect, they feel long enough to be a video but not so long that my brainrot gets the better of me and i click off
I hope you stick with making your dream game, I love the idea! Forager and skyblock are favorites of mine, and automation is always fun. I hope we see more devlogs for this game!
Its very interesting how we can have lots of systems in a game and the majority of it wont be noticeable at first by the player. Loved the content, im also creating devlog on the game Im making so it is very inspirational. Good luck!
@@Undercover_Femboy The joke is that jumping into an over scoped "dream project" often ends in disaster. I wouldn't worry if that's what you want to do though because the knowledge you gain is invaluable anyways; the means of travel carries more importance than the destination.
Great devlog! It’s amazing to see your progress-every update is so inspiring. Keep up the awesome work, can’t wait to see where this project goes next! 🚀
Lets go! Looking forward to seeing more of the devlogs! I think 10 minutes is definitely a good amount, 15 is nice if you want to focus on certain mechanics a bit more but I think for more general overviews 10 should be good :)
Glad to see your vision for this after you mentioned it on twitch. It looks like a fantastic start to the game and I cannot wait to see how the greek gods integrate with the survival factory gameplay.
Hey dude, you should check out miniland adventure. Its quite close to your dream game but doesnt have automation. Ive played it and it has its flaws but it could give you what to avoid and what could work
The game be GAMIN' It's already looking super grand and shows a tonne of creativity, I can't wait to see where this goes. Amazing editing as always, I love the chaos >:0
For me the longer the better 👍 But probably longer vids would either have to be lower quality or would take more time which you could spend on developing the game (or living human life) so medium seem like a nice sweet-spot. And also I really like factory-building, automation games
@@TheShelfman it's actually really simple, marking a class as abstract means instances of it can't be created and can only have classes deriving from it. Additionally it can have properties marked as abstract, which the deriving classes have to implement, and also abstract methods which the deriving classes have to implement too (they are forced to implement it)
Don't worry about your old code being bad. When I started game dev back in 2020 I started working on my "dream game" and eventually I gave up because just 3 months in I already improved soo much that I just couldn't put up with the code I wrote at the beginning. Also I would totally watch a 7 hour long Shelfman video lol. (Well more like put it on and listen to it while doing something else (I literally did that with a 2 part 6 hour video about debunking a popular psudoarcheology channel on tiktok that was spreading conspiracy theories lol))
I'm definitely not worrying about the old code. I'm so proud of how much I've learned over the past couple of years. I've made massive jumps! I don't think I could actually make a 7 hour long video, but I'd like to try 1 hour ones on maybe anniversaries of the game's development or something🤔
Can I help you create art for your game? I’ve always wanted to make a sandbox game but never got to it. But maybe if I just help you that’ll fulfill my dream of making one.
@@SweetTea14 i appreciate the offer! I currently already have someone helping me with the art (which will be clear in the next devlog) but feel free to join the discord in case I ask for more help in the future 😁
Maybe! But since I've been trying to make this game for years, and I finally got a plan, I'm a little more confident in my ability to do it. However, I also said that I have no idea if I'll ever finish it, so at least I'm trying to keep expectations a little low lol
10-15 min videos are the best, and after that you could upload a more in-depth talking about the systems and all for the people who want to understand, as i like learning about stuff like this, so try to incorporate explaining into your videos so we can understand the logic!
I kid you not I was just thinking I wish we could have longer videos since you don't upload often and they are entertaining as hell. I vote for long videos!
The art is all subject to change! I really like the 8x8 restriction but if I ever run into a problem that means I absolutely have to make everything 16x16, I will switch (and probably cry lol)
6:53 yeah that food thing to do and this is the thing about OPP that you need to use it I it's not only to be organize it's to be able to add things more easily later
Your game seem to have a lot in common with other games. My question is where will it stand out? What will you take out and what will you add? I wish you the best, keep it up!
Thanks! What's currently visible through the video is definitely looking similar to what's known. But it's really almost like a huge Minecraft modpack with Greek mythology. I'll explain the premise in more detail in the future, but basically the character has challenged Zeus to a bet, and now the player has to defeat all the Olympian gods in combat, and eventually Zeus, to win the bet. You create, and find items as part of quests, and once you've reached the end of a god's quest line, you can summon them to fight them, again eventually leading to a fight with Zeus!
@TheShelfman Sounds like combat will be a part of your game as well. I wonder how you will balance the automation vs action elements and how automation will be implemented with the greek mythology theme. Will combat be in the form of tower defence? Or more similar to Forager using your own weapons or maybe both? Will there be magic? You do you. These are just some things you can think about.
@@Ghostgamer3535 More like Forager for sure. Also most enemies can be found in the underworld, so they won't really mess with your factory world and such! And there might be magic, haven't fully decided yet. There's still a lot to figure out, especially combat wise
Hey, good job on this, it looks great so far. I'd say that around 10 minute videos that explain mechanics are good. Also, for some feedback, I noticed that the size of pixels across the game isn't consistent, such as the white square highlighter and the little rocks on the factory conveyor belt have smaller pixels than the rest of the game's art. It's small, but it makes the game's visuals feel slightly discontinuous.
Thanks so much! The white square is definitely something I'll look into, as for the stuff on the conveyorbelt, it's supposed to be that way as they're just tiny versions of the items. Having them be the actual size on the conveyor belt would be way too large😅
Longer the better, as long as you're not unnecessarily padding runtime Also, I had the same idea for a game like this a while back, and it turned our awful, so nice to see how you do it.
short videos are good because you can focus on one thing, but i also like long videos because i can sit back relax and enjoy the show :] (yeah i'm not helping at all but i guess long videos are good for me)
Do it! make your dream game! you won't! But in all seriousness looks cool! excited to see what you come up with. As far as video length anything is fine. however long it takes to tell the story you want to tell.
Just call it Factory in the Sky lmao (I did always love Castle in the Sky), also maybe an in between on shorter update videos, but then longer in depth ones?
Thanks! Will keep it in mind! As for the video length, I'm not sure I'd make multiple videos on the same thing, but I'll see if I can/want to look into it!
Will the game have more than 100 final bosses or a story where the best speedruner completes it in 7 days? always wanted a game like this, with optional multiplayer
besides that, it looks like you cant use Sky in a product name these days without go to the court with that draconian british television corporation, like No Man's Sky did.
There are plenty of recent indie steam games that got "sky" in their name so their must've been more to it with no man's sky. But interesting nonetheless!
i'd say 10-15 min videos with a longer video for the anniversary of development ( if you get there). and maybe some community posts for stuff you couldn't get the time to mention but still want to talk about.
Thanks! Currently aiming for 10-15 minutes, although it'll probably take a little while before I'm capable of doing that consistently without cutting too much😅
Awesome work! I cant wait to follow more of this. I would say 15-20 minute long videos are best to cover 1 or 2 big things you have added and a few smaller things. Anything over 25 minutes is too much.
nice video, looks great but in this style of pixel art having sprites with different scales and the fonts not having the same pixel size does not look good in my opinion, but you do you, keep it up!
