2 of my mentors are women scrollers. One started in the 70's and she is still at it. I just bought 6 patterns from her this morning.

Great tips Tyler. 👍 When you get older like me you might want to check out the lighted clamp on desk magnification light at Harbor Freight. It’s took me a couple of days to get used to it but the visibility was tremendous. Now I can’t scroll without it.

I have a dust mask handy at all times. The scroll saw makes really fine dust and we don't want to breathe that fine dust in.

I use both a bandsaw with a 1/8 blade and a scroll saw, instead of using a file to round over the back of the blade on both saws . I use a sharpening stone that you can buy at a dollar store . my stones are about 1''wide -3''long -1\2''' thick. for the cost of them , I all ways have a few around . BIG THUMBS UP !!!!!!
@ArtisanPirate

Awesome idea! So sorry for the late reply and I do see the advantage of using the stone instead of a file

Hi there Artisan Pirate , Pete Roberts from Halifax Nova Scotia Canada . When a lady asks me if she could use a scroll saw , I ask them can they use a sewing machine . I say they are pretty much the same . I give them a business card a suggest if they have questions , call me . Just one more tip for you to use!!!!

I'm pretty much set up the same as you. I like that magazine too and hope more people look into it. I sometimes stand and sometimes sit. So I haven't figured out yet the best angle for the saw. Also I never seem to remember to file the back of the blade lol. Your advice is very sound!. I did though add a LED magnifier to my stand. But that's probably not for everyone Question. Have you ever printed or drawn out your patterns in red ink? It shows up beautifully against a black blade. I always design my patterns in red. If you haven't try it. Enjoyed your video. Take care!

Just found your channel. And subscribed ;-) Anyhow I can for second the tip on the foot pedal. I used a Dewalt for 10 yrs without one. Never saw the need in it and thought I wouldn’t like it. Bought a new King scroll saw last year and it came with one. Now I do t know how I ever lived without one lol Keep up the good work

I like the idea of the forward tilt on your saw. It's a little difficult to tell how much of an angle is working for you. It looks to be rather steep, maybe 35 - 40 degrees? I have a great table with my saw mounted to it, maybe I can just figure a way to add some lift to the rear legs. Thank you for your encouragement well done! I am also a Steve Good fan.

My question is and maybe you can help me. I have been having trouble with my blades. The wood I use is a birch 1/2 wood and blade I use is #5 skip reverse tooth. I use a porter-cable scroll saw. When I am cutting my blades breaks and when I stop I see below that the blade is bent over at the bottom and another thing to my blades slide out of the grips even though I tighten them tightly. Blades are expensive and for it to be breaking all the time it’s getting old. Can you tell me what is going on or what wrong? Thank you for your help.
@ArtisanPirate
@ArtisanPirate Год назад
Thanks for reaching out, from what I'm reading it sounds like one of 2 reasons or maybe a combo of both, It does, to me sound like a tension issue and maybe a feed rate issue, take your time and let the blade do the work. also, a scroll saw cuts on the down stroke so, make sure the majority of the teeth are facing down,.

What kind of clamp does PC use? If it uses a bolt to clamp the blade you might have to sand the end of the bolt flat.
@peterclifton7069
@peterclifton7069 3 года назад
@@alfredsmith9727 I have tried that Alfred. Sometimes it just pulls straight out or it will run a couple of minutes then, bang, it comes out. It has been like it since I got it 18 months ago from new. I am looking to see if I can swap the clamp assembly for something different. One of Steve Good's videos showed a good one . I need to find out if it will fit PC.

Brother, I just got my scroll saw last week and I don't know why I waited so long. This is already a passion of mine, I do have 1 question, as I said, I'm new to scrolling, my wood starts to bounce up and down rapidly and has broken a couple of my projects. My wood is 3/8 to 1/2 inch walnut, birch, and I believe some pine. What hits you if you are troubleshooting jumping up and down? Thanks, man
@ArtisanPirate
@ArtisanPirate 2 года назад
Glad you love scrolling! Its so relaxing. Sounds like your blade is in wrong. A scroll saw cuts on the down stroke. So, make sure your blades teeth are facing down. I use a reverse tooth blade mostly. So, the last few teeth on those blades face upwards to produce a cleaner cut

Have you tried blue painters tape and spray glue i used to use packing tape but on close cuts some times the tape and pattern will tear and then you are in trouble.

Yea, and it is a good idea, however I consider that to be a waste of painters tape.
