Yes you are. It’s sadly far too rare to hear a true ghost story, or even true ghost story adjacent, or even one he heard from another person, from him, ever.
I LOVE the 1951 movie with Alistair Sim.... Being filmed in black and white, it just makes the mood all the more grim...... But SUCH an uplifting story! LOVE Dickens.... working on "the Pickwick Papers", now.
One of my favorites. I watch Patrick Stewart's version on Christmas Day every year. I do have to admit that the book is sitting on my "to be read" shelf, though. Something to think about in the story is the meaning of 'humbug'. Nowadays we often think of it being a synonym for nonsense, but it was actually a word to describe deception. Scrooge had come to genuinely believe that everyone was out for themselves and he saw people being terrible to each other all year long and, when they were kind to others during Christmas time, they were deceiving themselves that they were actually good and kind people. But the change wrought in Scrooge by the Ghosts' visit is that he actually became a good and kind man and, even though many people laughed at the change in him, he little heeded them. His own heart laughed and that was quite enough for him.
you have the gift of storytelling, Kevin. You deserve a history program on TV: you’re much better at presenting than Tony Robinso and are more qualified than he was when he started presenting!, it’s great that you included scenes in the Christmas Present part that are always ignored by adaptations yet go a long way to help show Scrooge was oblivious about what others everywhere feel and act regarding Christmas
FANTASTIC! 👏👏👏 I really enjoyed this story so much, thank you! Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without a little Ebenezer Scrooge. And I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas and a very blessed and happy New year! ☃️ MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE ☃️🎅🎉🎄🎁🍾
Exactly what I needed today to get into the Christmas spirit. Thank you so much for all that you do, these videos are indeed a way you make humanity your business 😊
wonderful narration thank you so much. i loved it. Scrooge always makes me tear up its such a wonderful tale that turns greed, loneliness and selfishness into joyful hope. What a gift to the world Charles Dickens was. Happy Christmas everyone
A Christmas Carol is the best ghost story ever told. My favorite film telling ever, is the George C. Scott version. George was made for the Ebenezer Scrooge role. Great work, Kev!
@@DetroitMicroSound I was thinking of the little matchmaker for Christmas. I also love the story of Oliver Twist but that would have to be in segments. Also the life of Charles Dickens I'd find fascinating to do. 👍🏻
Kevin, that was a magnificent telling of one of the best stories ever written. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Thank you! Merry Christmas, and God bless us, every one!
Found your channel the other day thru my recommend, and it was your secrets of a medieval castle video. Watched the whole thing. After that I’ve been binge watching all your other videos and this one was just another amazing addition!! Thanks so much Kevin!! You’re an amazing storyteller/historian which makes for an awesome combination!
@@thehistorysquad :) Thanks again for the amazing videos! I just finished your video on the pirate Albert Hicks and it was very engaging. And to think you were possibly related is crazy!
A great rendition Kevin!! I have read the book and many other Dickens books. It is said that he based a lot of the shady characters in Oliver Twist on people he knew around London and had made the acquaintance of. I loved his writing! Have a great Christmas Kevin and my best to your family. Dave.
Love the fancy dress, must say this video is by far a favorite above other favorites. I enjoy Charles Dickens too, what I find a bit strange about him is this, he didn't treat his own family very kindly. Thanks Kevin, Christmas is what Christmas is, but never a humbug. Merry Christmas again and Happy New Year!
Thanks for watching. His is a fascinating story and as you say he didn't always treat his family as well as you might expect, there were problems. I might cover him in a video one day. Have a wonderful Christmas.
Excellent story telling, It's just not Christmas until I've read, heard or watched a Christmas Carol. My favorite is Alistair Sim from 1951. Merry Christmas everyone.
Made my Day , Merry Xmas ! The 'Scrooge' Story seems especially poignant this Year in England. We all need to take a bit extra Care of each Other this Winter. What is always interesting (and very encouraging) is little brings Out the best in Folk anywhere than 'Sharing the load' and it's those most used to lifting who often seem most willing to! Good Will is a very Powerful Force.
Over the years, here in ever so much better modern US, I have had many jobs which either did not give Christmas off or gave Christmas off with no pay (mostly because they were closing for Christmas). I would tell my coworkers, "Even Scrooge gave Bob Cratchit Christmas Day off with pay." It was quite the damning indictment of the stinginess of our employers if I do say so myself.
Thank you for such a wonderful and blessed show. Besides Luke chapter 2, that’s my favorite Christmas story. I have read it a couple of times. My wife and I watch A Christmas Carol, 1951, with Alastair Sims every year. Have a Merry Christmas.
Thank you so much for this Kevin. It's so special to me as my grandad used to read it my sister and myself every Christmas eve as we were growing up. As I'm a Yorkshire lass, we're not far ftom York, which has some beautiful Dickensian style streets and building, stunning at Christmas time. Seasons greetings to you 🎄☃️🥂 x We visit York ofter
Such a great story lol it always reminds me of watching the movie at Christmas as a child 🤣 Great story telling you edited it down really well. That outfit is amazing 👏 lol
It's a sad and lonely world, for those who can't see beyond their social circle. It's a sad and lonely world, for those who are reminded to be generous only once the holiday season kicks in. I hope the Christmas Spirit could be the Christmas Day to you :) God truly bless us, everyone.
I read most of Dickens books, A Christmas Carol 5 or 6 times, for me it's his masterpiece, always fresh, and always puts me in the Christmas spirit. Great post keep up the good work and merry Christmas.
When I was a child growing up , my mother would read A Christmas Carol to my siblings and I every Christmas. I loved that story and I still do. I am a great an of Dickens. Thanks to my mum
I'm a year late, but can't wait!! Kevin is one of the great story tellers for sure, always sets the scene and the mood perfectly and you can feel the passion of what he does
Brilliantly told Kevin, I'm sending this to my mum coz she loves Dickens. I've always been familiar with the story, but knew very little about the man himself and always assumed he was a posh upper-class scholar type. Very interesting to learn more about him. Merry Christmas to you and your family :)
Another great video! I’ve thoroughly been enjoying all you videos. This Christmas I’m going to introduce your videos to my family, all history majors except myself the black sheep. I think my mom would especially appreciate your videos. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
That's so kind, thank you. I know you've been watching for a while now and really appreciate your support. Have a wonderful Christmas with your family.
Looking forward to watching this! If this at 44 mins is the abridged version, I wonder what length the entirety of your research on this would be! Anyway, merry Christmas Kevin!
As a chill North wind brings Christmas down over the vast wheatland prairies, it also carries the gathering sound of fifteen thousand moose, all gently clapping their antlers in appreciation of a great story, very well told. Merry Xmas Kevin : )
ITM Just lovely. Story telling is not an easy talent. The sound effects were an added bonus. Listening to the story was more emotional than any of the movies. Thank you .
I'll never forget watching Scrooge with my family on Christmas Eve. when we were small & it was late at night. the ending where the last spirit is revealed as death - mum & dad covered our eyes so we wouldn't see the skull. same thing happened at the cinema back in the 70's when the trailer for Alien came on & mum covered my eyes. Lost my 🌹mum🌹 to heart failure in February & it's reassuring to remember that far back into my childhood
As told by .........'The BEST Storyteller'.......Kevin Hicks. Lucky for Charles Dickens almost 180 years later your here to remind us of this magnificent Tale.
Yo, you have told me the best version of the story I’ve ever heard. Never did I realize that Scrooge lives in Jacob Marley‘s house. And I never understood the thing with the chains you’re the first person to bring that to my understanding so it makes much more sense as to why he does such a roundabout and becomes so giving in the end? How did I always missed that part? I love how you told the story I’m gonna show my son this next Christmas. Wow this is probably one of my favorites.🎉🎉❤
Merry Christmas, sir, and what a wonderful rendition of this classic. I highly enjoyed it and your Scrooge cosplay was spot on. Although now that I think of it you'd also make a great Jack the Ripper episode in the same attire. Cheers!
Thank you, Kevin. That was the best telling of The Carol I’ve heard, and it remains a message of hope for us all that should be heeded. Come in, man, and know me…
English Christmas with my grandparents my grandmother always spent her “mad money” on the luxuries of a bowl of fancy nuts and a bowl of tangerines. Only heat was a single coal fire in the living room.
Merry Christmas and God bless us every one and happy Christmas to the history squad and to you Kevin thank you for the wonderful reading of the story 😊
I used to read the unabridged version of this classic literature to my children in installments at Christmas. I feel certain that had Dickens not been an author he would have been an actor.
Absolutely wonderful! One of my favorite Christmas stories and you did it so well. Thank you! I hope you and your loved ones have a marvelous holiday season and a peaceful and safe new year. I think I’ll go dig out last year’s Queen’s speech.
@@thehistorysquad it’s hard for me to watch the (now) Kings Guards. It just doesn’t feel right. I admired the Queen more than anyone else alive. Her mother and father were admirable people and, I think, made a great contribution to English perseverance during the war.
✨🎄✨Thank you for a wonderful telling of __A Christmas Carol__ by Charles Dickens. I loved the dark, and shadowy atmosphere and your spooky ghosts. The story frightened me as a child. We do own a copy of the book, and I read it to my son when he was young. He then read it on his own. But your telling, by far, is one of the most entertaining. So I say, a Merry Christmas to us all. God bless us everyone.
Well Done! Bravo! I have seen pretty much every Christmas Carol shown on TV. But listening to your rendition brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.....thank you so very much.
Merry Christmas Kevin. Joyeux Noël, y'all as they say in Southern France. A Christmas Carol is the age old story of redemption. Too many people remember the miser Scrooge and not the redeemed Scrooge. The Muppet Christmas Carol is the version closest to the book. You need to watch the backgrounds in the movie for the many tongue in cheek jokes. My favorite is near the end. The establishment "Mickwhites" is behind Sir Michael Caine, who played Scrooge. He was born Maurice Micklewhite.
You fill out that scrooge outfit a little too good! Cheers Kevin from Nevada, USA and a Merry Christmas hope it was just swell for everyone seeing this!!😁😁
Kevin, thank you for a wonderful story. Your version brought tears to my old eyes and is better than any movie version of this wonderful story that I have seen. Have a Merry Christmas!
Never read the book might get it as an Audio book. BUT i´ve seen just about every version made as a movie starting with Bill Murray´s version some years back i started with the earliest i knew of black and white watched them all also animated versions. You are great at telling this story indeed every story or about the past histories great voice for telling things. Merry Christmas, stay safe...cheers....Peter from Denmark
