What really gets me is, Perry didnt magically learn to tolerate her ramblings, he still hates them, to death, and you can see it. Yet he still commits to helping a patient. That makes him so much a superhero, and also so human, its kind of amazing.
He cares a lot. That's why he stopped "Barbie" Elliot from going on a date and taking care of a patient herself, instead of another guy, who did not know the procedure. That's why he became depressed when he lost patients to rabies and also he gets into fights with Kelso because of the patients and more. He was consequent whenever someone was lazy and ignorant (like Ed), because his Job is to make sure people stay alive
I love the way Dr. Cox seems like such a militant-minded leader who can suppress his emotions but for some reason, the most heart-felt scenes seem to include or revolve around him. Scrubs has the best characters and some of the best writing.
I think John Mcginley said somewhere he wanted his character to tell his son, every time his son saw the show, that he loved him. His son has Down Syndrome. That hits different when you rewatch the show knowing it
@@willis32 I remember the episode when Dr. Cox has to comfort a patient with Down Syndrome who was scared about going in for surgery. What you say makes a lot of sense, considering the plot of that very episode.
I love that moment when she asks, "Have ya ever had cutie pie, Perry?" and he mumbles "No, of course not..." as he collapses into the chair. It brought me a big laugh which was finally a release from the intensity of that sadness. Denise gets to be Denise again; Cox gets to be Cox again, but their relationship has moved forward, and it's OK to move on...
When he looks at the card and starts recalling what she said earlier..... the first time you watch this, it really punches you right in the heart, you really dont see that twist coming!.. I still cry everytime i watch it! I love Scrubs!
It reminds me of something said earlier in the series. Jordan and Dani ask Cox and JD if they ever actually LISTEN to their patients… they recall things a particular patient had said to them throughout the day and realize she had attempted suicide and was asking for help without being direct. Gave me chills
This scene and Cox's brother's funeral (Brendan Fraser) are two of the best 'out of nowhere/emotional gut punch' sequences from this series...brilliant, creative writing that had me tearing up but smiling at the same time (in both cases) due to how clever and well played they were. Bravo, 'Scrubs' writers... Bravo.
Don't forget the episode where the girl had rabies and he tried to save like 7 patients with her organs. How to save a life from the fray was in that episode
This is why everyone really loves Dr Cox. We all know that he was dealt a terrible hand with his father beating him when he was a child. Perry saw so much suffering in the world that he choose to become a doctor, so that he could try and reduce the suffering by just a little bit, but he needed his ego and arrogance to protect him from what he sees every day, which is innocent people suffering and dying whilst he tries to save them. Cox may be a jerk to the majority of people, but that's the only way he can survive the world that keep dealing him these terrible hands, but at the end of the day, he will always make the right call to advance the push to reduce the suffering.
This video represents exactly 1/2 of why this was the finest show on television. When you weren't busy laughing to the point where you couldn't breath (the other half), something serious would happen, like this video demonstrates, to give you a window into misery: the patients, the health care providers, and the health care providers relationships, in addition to said health care provider's humanity.
This is the brilliance of Scrubs writing where I still tear up at the emotional scenes like this as well as the ending to My Screw Up and My Lunch. It just shows that comedy is more than a laugh factory. It makes you feel.
Moments like this are why Scrubs is the best sitcom ever made. It could have been just a silly romp where JD and Turk have Guy Love and Dr. Cox is always angry and the janitor is insane and everything is a joke, but they chose not to be that way.
this was the first episode of scrubs i'd ever watched, it was so sad i had to leave the room so my brother wouldn't see me crying at the end :'( i knew from that moment that i would love scrubs, and i do
I was a teenager when my mom introduced my to Scrubs and I watched the whole show purely for entertainment. Watching it all again as an adult, I now appreciate all the lessons and messages these episdoes teach while still being very funny. This is the kind of show you have to watch multiple times to be able to appreciate all the novelties it has as an emotional comedy, how it balances laughter and crying.
He has such a high level of empathy you can see how he tries so hard to turn it off when he's working, it probably tortures him. Cox doesn't want to show that he cares but deep down he just wants to help people feel better
I love how Dr Cox plays the cold guy act. But he actually cares about people the most in the hospital. And he is always trying doing the right thing by people. He knew someone that annoyed him was experiencing pain that was like no other. And gritted his teeth to try and make that person feel some kind of affection. It's actually a really telling scene about Dr Cox's. He just wants to be a cold Bastard but he ain't one.
Scenes like this are why I loved this show. You could have the dumbest, silliest shit going on in this hospital, and then in an instant they just get you right in the heart. And I love how almost all the characters experience moments like this, where they put their exaggerated character types aside to just be human.
I figured, the first time she'd mentioned that her son would always be 10 to her, that he died and she started chattering all the time to make sure she didn't have time to think about it. This ending did not surprise me... did make me cry, though. That poor woman.
I can watch pretty much every other scene in those "most emotional moments" Scrubs compilations and be pretty much fine, but this scene f***ing destroys me.
Denise isn't given enough credit for being a hero herself. Her son died, but she admired the people who tried to help him so much, and couldn't stand thinking of that happening to anyone else, that she had to become a paramedic too.
There's NEVER been a show or film that can send you through the range of emotions like Scrubs. Laughter. Annoyance. Sadness. Admiration. Grief. Relief. Happiness. All in one scene 😂
This scene, this show always makes sure to show that when someone really needs help that cox drops the tough guy act and takes care of that person every single time, same with JD/Turk and their scenenigans.
Hits like a train! I sympathised when I seen this episode years ago, before I became a dad and it made me feel a little but now.. now it just makes me think what if?!
THIS is why I love Scrubs so much... It faces the tragedy that happens around us every day. There are other comedy series that I like, but Scrubs is so amazing because it reminds me of MASH sometimes. It blends humor and silliness with love and loss and fear and sadness. Scrubs is one of those magic shows that can have you giggling one moment and sobbing the next. I've seen the entire series a dozen times and I never tire of it.
@Cesar918 I agree, because this is emotional in a different way than the other "moments". In this one you think that denise is a real pain in the ass all the episode (as dr. cox), but in the ending (at 1:06 and forward in the clip) you realise what has happened at the same time as dr.cox does and that makes you become emotional aswell ;)
Johnny C is obviously incredible, but I feel like Molly Shannon's performance in this scene is understated, she is SOOOO fucking funny the entire episode, and SOOOOO incredible in this scene. She is up there with some of the greats.
Specifically why I love Perry, He's an asshole when he needs to teach people how to take care of others because he knows what it feels like not to be taken care of and the second he sees someone in need he just drops his guard and answers the call like a boss
Scrubs really was an amazing show, it managed to make me laugh constantly and then moments like this that are able to make me openly weep the only other show that does this is futurama
This draws parallels with planes, trains and automobiles, when someone is overly chatty to a point where they are annoying, but it is simply because inside they are hurting so so bad.
I love how Cox is always mean to everybody and act like he doesn't give a damn and yet the moments in the show where you can see him really being ashamed of himself is when he realizes his actions have caused real hurt to others....like here, as he drops his hand with the picture you can clearly see how bad he feels for the way he spoke to Denise after realizing her son died and immediately tries to make her feel better, even if he hates listening to her speaking. Knowing now It is the way she copes for her tragic loss, he immediately becomes selfless.
ive thought of this episode in and out probs last 15 years few times a month, hit so hard, such a good episode, "he died" everyone well some people, i think as normal, have a story, u dont know
