My favourite episode I've reviewed so far! I can't believe I haven't seen this one, it was absolutely genius and reminded me that 'everything comes down to poo' :)
I take a look at the show from a real doctor perspective breaking down the medicine onscreen, it's accuracy and comparing it to my real life experience as a doctor.
There will be more reviews, including other episodes of Scrubs, House MD. The Good Doctor, Grey’s Anatomy, The Resident and ER!

I lost it when the lighter came out for "Guy Love". The first time I heard that song was actually at summer camp and two guys (obviously) performed it, but got kicked off stage because the adults didn't like it :(

Talk to people with synesthesia. There're definitely some medical maladies and neuroses that sound at least more pleasant than the alternative, but it's not always sunshine and rainbows. For instance, one of the most common forms of synesthesia, itself a condition that can manifest as seeing colors where you see words, or the touch of something having a specific smell in your brain, etc... Is Misphonia. Misphonia is a condition that causes irrational emotional reactions in response to sound, as well as other reactions on top of that. For instance, in my case, chewing, lip smacking, excessive white noise, or even just discordant chatter can make me irrationally angry at pretty much anything around me. Velcro tearing, markers on paper, and some other similar noises make the back of my throat itch. It's unpleasant, to say the least.

When I was studying psychology/neurobiology one case study I remember seeing was of a person who was having small seizures in the pleasure processing area's of their brain, they experienced a blissful sensation and felt that 'god was talking to them' and refused treatment because of that, which was really sad because their brain was destroying parts of itself, but it felt good so they refused to treat the problem. I still wonder sometimes how that case turned out long term.

I think you're my favorite doctor to react to scrubs, because while you point out inaccuracies in the show you also make sure to follow up "but here's why it's probably inaccurate, because the show is condensing this particular part of medicine to move the plot along" or something along those lines. You know how to separate it being "wrong" from it needing to keep the show from overwhelming its audience.

Music is a massive part of Scrubs. And some of the best songs were always the ones that managed to be part of the episode itself. Whether it's Ted doing an acoustic ukulele rendition of Hey Ya, or Colin Hay doing his own cover of Overkill. My Musical is one of the best episodes of the series.

Since the show is from JD's perspective I always wondered if this is episode was actually him imagining what the patient was going through which would explain why everyone is dancing around even though her issue is purely auditorial it seems.

@Knowtheledge Thelastdayz some case were from other's perspective.
@joelf1
@joelf1 5 лет назад
@Knowtheledge Thelastdayz Well, it's a bit complicated really. I've studied storytelling in it's various forms (and watched all of Scrubs a good couple of times) and I'd say it is as much from JD's prespective as you could more or less exspect from a show. Since there is no 'text' beside what is said in the scenes (as there would be in a book or a written play) many clues concerning the perspective are missing, so to speak. Movies or shows are almost never from someone's direct perspective since this would logically involve a first person view which was done before (see the movie 'Hardcore Henry') but not often. However the clues that CAN be found mostly point toward the show being from his perspective: We almost exclusively follow him around during the show and while there are a few scenes without him or episodes where we follow Turk, Elliott or even others, these are far and few between and in the latter case are clearly exceptions to the rule. We also hear JD's thoughts and even see his daydreams which in stories is a good indicator of perspective. Lastly the episode titles (except in the ninth season, which is clearly it's own seperate thing) are all in the format 'My ...' which refers to JD as can be seen in many cases. All in all it is absolutely fair to say that Scrubs is told from JD's perspective with room for the usual exceptions to the rule. Storytelling is just not always as clear cut as we would think or like it to be.
@MikaeruDaiTenshi
@MikaeruDaiTenshi 5 лет назад
@@joelf1 You forgot that he also acts as a narrator. We usually hear his inner monologue and see his daydreams. That's why the series is from his perspective, there are exceptions though. And the last season is about the new students, with Lucy as the narrator, as JD's journey at Sacred Heart is over.

The singing only occurs when the patient is present, so it's clearly from her perspective. Also, the actor who plays the patient was on the broadway version of Avenue Q, so perhaps she mentally associates singing with dancing a lot more than the rest of us do.

@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 I guess it depends on the patient, "Your Cuckoo-pants" adds levity to what the patient may be thinking is a dire situation, it may calm them down or break any sort of mental downward spiral they may be having. psychosis can be serious but it also treatable so adding levity could actually stop them from exacerbating the condition.

I suffered a brain injury of my temporal lobe and the optic nerve on the right side of my brain, making the outside of my right eye blind and effecting my reading, memory and concentration. The auditory cortex isn't the part of my temporal lobe that was damaged. This has changed the way my brain remembers and hears things. If I hear things or say them out loud it gets locked into my brain sort of like a photographic memory. My hearing is better than most. I can hear things that most people can't because of how much my hearing has been amplified. I listened to a 44 hour audiobook in about 10 hours and can retain auditory information better when it's faster and my brain has to focus. If it's too slow I zone out and don't retain information as well. It's interesting how the brain works

Have you considered taking up crimefighting, because that sounds a lot like a better version of Daredevil. I jest, of course but I genuinely think that, as far as afflictions go, that's one of the benefactory ones.
@CloverRose
@CloverRose 6 лет назад
You are not the first person to suggest that. Great minds think alike. But my attention span is very bad and it takes a certain sort of auditory information to stick. Sounds like traffic and people walking is extremely loud to me but when there's too many different noises in one spot that I have to focus on my brain shuts down and I zone out. It's sort of like having to restart a computer after it freezes

Thanks for doing these, i love watching your channel in general but these "scrubs reviews" are my highlight. One thing i would like to point out because ever since i noticed it, it became my favorite part of "my musical" is that everyone only starts singing as long as they're in the same room as her, they talk normally whenever she is not present. it is a small thing and of course "logical" but the fact that the writers paid attention TO these details is what i love so much about scrubs. In watching the commentary for this episode, the doctor for the show ( The real J.D. ... Yes, I am a Scrubs nerd ) did find some sort of medical condition where the patient thought they heard music or singing. It's been a while, but I am pretty sure I am remembering that right. Oliver Sacks also wrote "Musicophilia", a book all about patients with auditory hallucinations or who developed a great affinity for music where there was none before. A recent "mainstream" case is Oscar winning actress Mary Steenburgen, who woke up from anaesthesia after a minor operation on her arm to find that when someone would speak to her, "those words were transformed into notes on a scale". So, despite its apparent absurdity, I guess this episode has some truth to it! Anyway, as a med student, I really enjoy all of your reviews a lot! Keep on producing such great content!

One of the many things I love about this episode in particular is that they pay attention to when the characters aren't around the patient, and so talk normally. Loved that production of Singin' in the Rain. I was fortunate enough to be in London for work while it was on. I don't know why the algorithm chose your videos for me this evening, but I'm really enjoying them!

Dr. Hope, this video is bloody brilliant on your part - definitely your best yet! Great observations on "Musical Scrubs"! Always enjoy hearing you play your guitar & sing, and this was the perfect opportunity. Keep the great videos coming!!

I never thought I would enjoy a video like this, but you have changed my mind. At least, in your case. Normally, I discount such things as this because, of course, the show; in this case Scrubs, is about the story and not about how accurate it is. I really appreciate the work you did, as well. Rewriting 'Everything comes down to poo' was a touch of genius! Thank you

We also like to use the term "Smashing in the back door". Though, it's obviously 'horses for courses' with when to use which.

great that you mentioned Schizophrenia! My mother suffered her whole live ( well more like my whole live ) from this disorder and as a teenager it was quite upsetting to see her transformation from one day to another. It usually always happened once a year ( around the same time at the beginning of the year ) and her behavior changed drastically. Later in life, she even attempted some suicide attempts........unfortunately the last one was her last and she succumbed her attempt!

dude you could just do all scrubs and house episodes.. i love both shows and it's really cool to see them from a professional point of view.. i'm not a dumb man but a lot of things about clinical procedures are just not things you know if you aren't a doc or nurse yourself and it's not even about language difficulties.. i'm fairly fluent in english and watch a lot of shows in english.. it's just sometimes cool to get things explained a little better when they show things they don't explain.. and then there is the fact that i have to smile through every video i watch because i love the shows and it's just nice to see how much you enjoy them yourself and the smile you have then is very contagious.. :) have a nice week! you earned my sub.. greetings from germany!

This isn’t exactly the same concept as the episode but there’s a musical called a “A New Brain” by William Finn which is sorta close. The story is being told through musical, so not all of the singing in the show is somebody’s hallucination, but it does feature auditory and visual hallucinations that are singing and dancing on stage. Now it’s not really focused on the medical side of things but all the hospital staff in the show dance and sing including multiple songs about their attempts to diagnose and treat one specific patient. It’s an incredible musical and I figured it was close enough to the concept of this episode to mention if anyone is interested. Great video!

It's always funny to see people reacting to actresses and actors "suddenly being able to sing". :D The fact is, actor training includes a lot of stuff, in many schools including singing training. And many actors are also interested in developing their voices. Incidentally singing really helps you develop those beautiful vocal cords.

The writers of this musical also did Avenue Q, Book of Mormon, and Frozen, and I just realized that the sad/dire music when Dr Cox discovers the aneurysm sounded a lot like the piano at the beginning of "Let it Go"

ah i love this episode!!!! Would love to see you do "My Screw up" "My Hero" or "My Long Goodbye" such tear jerkers. There is this one that makes me cry as it deals with MS, but that is more because my Mum has Primary Progressive MS and it hits very close to home.

I'd like to suggest the Their Story from S6 E17 as it has a great Todd storyline about patient advocacy and medical ethics which is surprisingly sympathetic for The Todd. Also has a good storyline which critiques US hospital funding and shines a light on the work which nurses do to keep everything running. As always, thanks and keep up the good work.

I have to recommend a copy of the DVD for this season. This episode has a commentary track that discusses the level of research they did for this, both medial and Scrubs lore level. The brain issue was intentional to create at least the thinnest air of plausibility.
