In early 2016 the New Town High School submitted plans to the Hobart City Council to extend Midwood St to the end of Bromby St, on the western side of the neighbouring Hobart Suburban Railway Line. The proposal was an attempt to ease school bus congestion at the front of the High School. Nowhere in the plans was there an indication that it would be a standard "level crossing" - retaining right-of-way for proposed future light-rail or heritage-rail uses. The plans indicated a burial of the railway and severing of the adjoining Hobart Intercity Cycleway. The National Rail Safety Regulator also has draft policies advocating no new level crossings nation-wide, to improve safety at rail & road interfaces. The road extension plan was shelved after rail proponents and others submitted objections and when it was discovered that residents along Brumby St had not been notified of the proposal.
