I only really came to appreciate his talent watching SCTV here on RU-vid. If you haven't seen it, Death of a Salesman with Levy as Ricardo Montalban playing Willie Loman is hilarious.
*SCTV built and maintained a universe that was in fact more real than the world it portrayed.* Every time the SCTV theme started up I felt "That is THE place to be, I'd like to move there, it's my kind of world." NOTHING then and now could touch it. It's still amazing.
Wrong! Same funny. It's so obvious when someone hates on SNL that they are likely a butthurt conservative. Do you have a picture of Tim Pool in your wallet for those private times?
SCTV is what use to make TV great! Todays crap doesn't even compare to the talent on this show then! RIP big John Candy! You made me proud to be a Canadian
Catherine O'Hara has always been beautiful and hilarious! Didn't grow up watching SCTV, but it's great to watch these old episodes! Thank you for posting these!
True story: just showed the “Gypsies ptoo” sketch to a Romanian coworker thinking she might get the joke. Did she ever! and has been imitating John Candy the rest of the day every time I look at her! “Gypsies, ptoo!” And laughing and laughing! SCTV really tapped into something there!
Hilarious to see this vasectomy sketch, written and performed so long ago. The nurses chortling, the men comforting each other. Happy that SCTV is being kept alive here. Thanks!
I had a vasectomy a few months ago and riffed on this scene in the office after it was done. No one got it except one guy in his 50’s. We had a good laugh. The ironic part, for me anyhow is that the office was in Don Mills(Toronto) but also the name Eugene Levy used in that western parody they did on SCTV(Six Gun Justice.) Anyhow, in my head, it was hilarious.
one of these episodes turned me into a newt & I didn't get better, but I was always ashamed to be a part of the human whoopsiedaisymushroomcloudealybopaloserspecies
back when i was about 16 in 88 me and my best friend were super heavy metal, we had long hair and the jean vest with all the band patches and all that stuff. i use to wear this cross on a chain ear ring that hung down to my shoulder and me and our little circle wore a lot of bracelets which wasnt the norm in that scene. anyway one day my friend took me with him when he was visiting some grandmother a few cities away, she was this stern old lady from some other country "no idea where" but the second she saw us she gave us the most indignant glance and said we looked like Gypsies. we thought it was hilarious and took it as the best compliment we ever got, we joked about it for months.
@@sralyn LOL, i was in my awkward teenage stage at that time, i was 6'5" and thin as a rail. but in my twenties i was going out clubbing looking like a rock star. now im just some exhausted 50 year dude that hates looking in the mirror.
To me, Catherine O'Hara's masterpiece. I've waited for this segment for years in my patience. In my music history latin chants, only Catherine could master the gregorian chants and bring them to modern acceptance, even though those who stubbed their toes could not refrain from cussing out loud and violate their vow.
"He's gonna be another Pat Bouttete..not quite as good as him...but.." LOL. Brilliant improv line by Joe, and you can see John almost losing it, which is why they cutaway to Catherine. (FYI, Bouttete was a second or third-stringer on the Leafs at that time). Withooot a dooot, THE greatest sketch comedy show ever...eh?
I laughed harder, and more often, at this one 30 minute video than I have in 5 years of sitting through SNL. I really wish Joe Flaherty had as big as his co-stars.
As a Romany Gypsy, I found this hilarious. I don't know why they picked us. The story about God baking people in an oven is actually real but not an actual belief. Just a Santa Claus story to reassure brown kids. Also a Canadian, I once sat directly behind Katherine O'Hara at a Bob Marley concert.
I bet they had a hard time not laughing at Eugene Levy's "poet" character, because i was apoplectic. Joe Flaherty was likely the inspiration for Mike Myers character in So i married an Axe Murder. Which was awesome too!
I'm so glad to find this little trove of episodes, because it's been incredibly difficult to find anything other than the NBC edition of the show in the US, but from about '88-93 or so, I watched the Nick at Nite edition of the show, and haven't been able to find that anywhere. It seemed to be a half-hour version of all the previous shows including the NBC stuff.
@@pusher1012000 I realize that quite well. What's your point? Mine is that the good old days survived into the later 1990s at least, even though cell phones and the internet existed. (Consider also that "[I]n 1995, the Internet had a worldwide user base of less than 40 million." -The Rather Petite Internet of 1995, Pingdom.)
Catherine O’Hara played Bam Bam on Curb your Enthusiasm, Funkhouser’s wacky sister, that Jeff beds while Larry raids Marty’s fridge. One of the best episodes.
Sure you can. It's just in a somewhat different forum. From South Park to Dave Chappelle to Curb Your Enthusiasm etc etc. It's out there. Mind you nothing was as funny as SCTV
I hope the success of schitts Creek, revives sctv to show Eugene Levy,s hilarious sketches and other on that show. Way better then SNL, too political now getting stale, get back to real comedy. Eugen does hilarious take on the original movie ocean,s eleven. His Bobb Bitan, world,s worst comedian, Did Dither s and more, oh, and take off on jeopardy, or reach for the top, as As Alex Trebek, a take off on Trebek. Re Remember this show on in mid seventies. Oh, ii m sure Trebek would have laughed at Eugene losing patience. First season was best on SCTV. It started in Edmonton then went to Toronto. A gem find on RU-vid, all characters were great.
