Underwater noise makers. Scuba Tank Bangers. Lobster sticks. Dive Alerts. I've confiscated them all in my time.
Because if you can't be trusted to dive with them normally, I'm going to have to take them away!
There's all kinds of ways to get attention underwater. Here, we going over the basics of UW signaling devices and giving you top tips for underwater dive etiquette, because nobody wants to be THAT diver! To paraphrase the great Jacques Cousteau, it's a silent world down there.
Check out the Dive Alert device... it might just save your life one day. Use responsibly ;-) bit.ly/2X26kgZ

Agreed! I LOVE the video of the offending diver reaching back for damned tank banger in vain. I use my working double ender boltsnap. Well, I WOULD use that, if I were compelled to make noise underwater. I typically just use my dive light to get attention.

What I use for audible noise is one of the two knives I carry, both have a metal butt end easy to tap the tank also carry a whistle for the surface... Love your move to confiscate her "toy rattle"! There will always be those people that live in their little cocoon with no clue about how what they are doing effects others...good job!! Getting back to the great "sound of silence"...I just bought a great regulator based on the old double hose regulators...called the Kraken Argonaut by Vintage Double Hose...I've been diving since 1965 and used a double hose, then went to the single hose, but always disliked the bubbles blowing by my ears and causing a sound disturbance... so recently went to the Kraken...it's a modern version which has low and high pressure ports built into a manifold which you can configure and the best part is the exhaust bubbles vent behind your head...bringing back the "sound of silence"!

Omgeee, I think this was truly my favorite entertaining & COMPLETELY agree with you video by far. 😆. Thank you for passing this wisdom on to other divers. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 That being said, I do love the ‘quacked’ as I call it. Only used in emergencies and find it quite comforting to have and got due to being grabbed one too many times by distressed divers when I was trying to complete my Advanced Open Water certification with my dive instructor. One who’d lost his dive buddy due to poor visibility that day & another who didn’t check his air properly before diving. 🤦‍♀️. My instructor had one and it worked beautifully as it was designed to.

Once I was on a dive where there were 2 dive masters at the same site with the same rattle and you didn't know which was calling their group. I dive with a handful of buddies and if it seems like the group is getting separated or you just want to show someone a cool shark, I've smacked my tank with the back of my knife, and I've yelled, but usually we just use our flash lights and our hands to make a blinking signal.

08:40 Have one of those and today it actually came in very handy today. Dove in a local lake with 3 other divers. We were a group of 4. Along the bottom of the lake, is this kind of obstacle course that is marked with a line that we try to follow. But visibility today was from 5 m to 50 cm. The leed diver lost track of the line due to bad visibility, I was a bit lower down and managed to find the line. The leed diver knew I had a air integrated horn. Thay had there back towards me so...🦆🦆🦆🦆. They turned around, saw me with line in hand and all 4 of us continued the dive. So you can say that air intigrated horn helped us get all our ducks in a row...

Hi James, I've found your channel lately and now kinda binge-watching :D. Usually I just click on thumbs up on videos, but only occasionally make comments now obviously I couldn't resist. I really like your videos, and the sense of humor they are made :). And for a topic; I'm also an instructor, also guided dives alot, but never owned any of those noise making devices. Can't agree more on quiet dives. I guess sometimes we can have divers in a group who's attention harder to catch, but what I experienced so far is those kinda divers who's not look at you eventually well, they don't quite mind any knocking or so XD. Though bolt snaps/ double-ender I use very rarely for knocking just like you said, same idea :).

The shot of her trying to find it shows how much of a mess her group was. Two of them are completely vertical and very close to the ground/coral and using their hands to move. They need more training if that's how they dive after a week of recent experience.

I have a DiveAlert on my inflator hose, but i keep it only for SHTF situation. When I'm diving with my wife i use bolt snap - just start clicking the mechanism. If we dive with the ground- i let the people know. So when they hear click, click, click they don't bother to scramble.

I absolutely HATE those damn rattles. I have spent more than one dive looking around to see who is trying to get someone’s attention. I also think they’re dangerous as they are the diver’s version of “crying wolf.” Case in point: This lady had one that was making noise constantly. Halfway through the dive, we all just started ignoring the sound. Towards the end of the dive, she was purposely using it to try and signal for attention, and no one was responding. Thankfully she was just signaling to look at something cool for the entire group, but it could’ve been deadly if it had been an emergency! PS... Just found your channel and loving it! New sub here!

4:30 oh gosh I'd never how rude! I only bought one because during my certification the guide also had a DSD student and that student kicked me into a reef and my second regulator got stuck and I was stuck while the group swam ahead eventually freeing myself and catching up but it would have been nice to signal for help as they didn't glance backwards.

Love the footage of Grand Cayman. I hadn't seen a tank banger until I dove with my uncle in the St. Lawrence River in NY. I dive mostly in the Puget Sound and we apparently don't use them here. I may go a little over board, but I have 3 audible signaling techniques. Like you I generally use a clip or even my flashlight underwater, we pretty much always dive with flashlights here. The Vis is usually 10-15 feet until you get below the plankton blooms where it opens up to over 30-40 but is pitch black. At the surface I also have a cheap dive whistle. In addition, although I rarely use it, I have a diver alert horn. Its great but.... as you pointed out, in a true emergency might not work as you might be out of air.

On the last trip to Caribbean my friend was diving with a spear to eliminate lionfish. All others in a group were helping him out to spot the "targets". I personally didn't have any signaling device with me, so I banged my cheap $30 aluminum-body dive light into a tank to attract friends attention. Was not as effective over longer distances as I wanted it to be, as I did not wanna slam too hard and destroy the light.

Hi Simon, thanks for watching. The colder the water, the slower sound will travel. Water gets less dense as it cools (Ice floats on Water.) @KimonFrousios 4 года назад
@@DiversReady Water is at its densest at +4C, if memory serves me well. It expands either side of that. So with the exception of really icy water, (0-4C) that most people will never dive in, it is safe to generalize that sound should travel better through cold water than warm water.

That can be done. I'm not the smallest of people, that is true, but aerobically, I'm fit as a fiddle (rugby!) The best fitness for scuba diving in terms of injury prevention is cardio, stretching and core strength. You don't want to build too much muscle, because muscles are oxygen hungry and that increases your breathing rate. Swimming and yoga are the best for Scuba Divers. James
