I could listen to Vin Scully read the phone book. Because you know he'd include interesting facts about each household, and with that friendly voice and folksy manner, he's the best baseball announcer ever. What an amazing career. Thanks Mr. Scully!

555-3226. Interesting thing about that phone number. On this day in 1992, Homer Simpson of the Fox television show The Simpsons, advertised his first Mr Plow commercial of which 555-3226 was the phone number. Years later, his wife Marge Simpson would use it for her pretzel wagon business. Let's get back to this one.

No, Vin was a fan of baseball. He was the most neutral broadcaster I’ve ever had the privilege of listening. He’d critique the opposition and the Dodgers when the situation arose but he did so in a professional manner. That’s why we will never have another broadcaster like him, ever.

Growing up in Southern California and going to many Dodger games, this video is very fitting to my personal history. I listened to many Dodger games through my 9 volt transistor radio. I would lay in bed at night listening to the games only to wake up to a dead battery. I'm sure the battery companies enjoyed battery sales when Vin Scully and Jerry Doggett called the games. I moved from Southern California in 1977 but always kept track of Vin Scully. Every time I heard Vin was going to call any event nationally I was in front of the television or radio. My son is a huge Yankees fan and grew up idolizing Derek Jeter. He even wore #2 when he played ball. So, I knew all the players. In February 2011, I flew into Tampa International Airport to visit a family member. My daughter was with me and I commented to her how cool it would be to run into a Major League baseball player because it was Spring training time. I got my wish. My daughter and I started walking and looking for an exit. The next thing I know I'm walking straight towards Mariano Rivera. I couldn't believe it. I was 54 at the time but felt like a 10 year old little leaguer. I walked up to Mariano, stuck out my right hand for a handshake and so did he. I was in shock, I don't even remember if I said anything. I have many great memories of baseball, from the very beginning at age 8 when my Dad was teaching me the game, Little League, Pony League, High School, then when my son came along I taught him the game and enjoyed watching him play. Meeting Mariano Rivera has to rank at or near the top of my association with baseball. I will never forget it.

To: Daniel Zanier. I grew up in Pasadena, Ca., and have listened to Vince Scully for eons despite the fact I am not a Dodger fan. He is, without question, the most brilliant man ever to grace a microphone. He paints a words-eye picture like no other. It's like music to one's ears to listen to this great voice. Wow! I don't think anyone will ever rival this man for his at the microphone work. We throw accolades around these days like confetti. In Scully's case, he is without question, the best.

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm a Yanks fan but I always listened to him on NBC's "Game of the Week" in the 80s. Plus, he's from New York and used to broadcast for the Dodgers when they were in Brooklyn. His ability as a broadcaster is apparent, but he's such an agreeable. modest person. He really is a treasure for baseball fans in LA and everywhere.
@stevesmith6685
@stevesmith6685 8 лет назад
Point of fact, I've been around for a while. I don't remember hearing Vin Scully when he did Dodger games in Brooklyn in the '50s but I was born then in that borough. I heard him nationally growing up and now on You Tube for most of my life. He is a New Yorker, hired by the original legend of the Dodgers behind the microphone, Red Barber. Vin echoes his mentor Barber. Vin is a journalist, explaining what you are seeing on TV (or on radio what is going on the field). On TV Vin has the time, as he did here and he was prepared - he is always prepared - to report on who the players are, what their strengths, weaknesses are, their background, recent playing history, etc., etc. He reports. Like Red Barber, he is a reporter. He talks to the players. As an experienced reporter he has become a essayist - not a gossip columnist - on the game in front of him, the players, the situations and what this specific game means over the years. What I mean by not being a gossip columnist is that he doesn't get involved in rumor, scandal, radio talk show stuff, salary negotiations, etc. He is covering a baseball game, like a reporter, and like any good reporter sometimes - if we are lucky - he shows us his personality. Thankfully for baseball fans he shows us his reporting skills, his personality, his poetic way with words and his wonderful personality. Vin had an operation at the end of the regular season or as he calls it, "the regular year." I wish you a full recovery my fellow Brooklynite and I hope you hear your play by play once again in 2016!
