Oh my word. This is insane. I remember seeing the finished product on DA, and I was flabbergasted then. I don't... I don't even understand how people do this, and I just sat and watched exactly how it happened. So much talent. So cool, Clara.
The finished hand is perfect and thank you for the video. It gives people a realistic idea of what it takes to do something like this and that is very important for those of us just starting out. What kind of clay are you using? Maybe a shot of all your tools laid out? Again, thank you for taking the time to do this. It is the type of thing that makes RU-vid worthwhile. mb
Thank you so much for appreciating my video and taking the time to leave a comment 🙏 It means a lot to me !! I used cheap air drying clay from an art shop. It actually works well and isn't troublesome but it's fragile. Also, I'm planning to post another video of a clay sculpture in the upcoming month :) a shot of my tools is a great idea !
Very nice job and enjoyable to watch you work. Thanks for sharing! Have you tried using an armature inside of your sculptures? Especially important for air dry clay. Adding a stiff wire armature will support the clay as it dries and ages and will help prevent breakage. I like to err on the side of an over-strong armature. Since it doesn't show you don't lose anything. I believe if you loosely cover the clay so that it dries slowly, it may help prevent some of the cracking too.
I never really realized it could make a big difference when it come down to air dry clay. I think you make a really good point. I will put an armature for my next sculpture ! Thank you a lot ^^
hi! you have amazing talent omg :O my jaw dropped as i watched your vid! i just wanted to ask, for the board you used, is that a concrete board? or? and did u hammer those nails in there?
Thank you so much !! My installation is really basic and not sophisticated (oups). It's not a concrete board. It's a simple plank of wood (with some plastic paint on it) in which, like you said, I hammered the nails. Actually it can be perfect to do your sculpture and, once it's dried you lift the hand. It comes out perfect with holes at the bottom. Then you can select more good looking pedestal and put nails in it at the same distance they were in the plank of wood. Then, your hand sculpture is standing again on a prettier stand :) You just have to make sure the nails & the clay won't stick together (by moving it up and down when it's drying). It's a good alternative when you don't know or have a good pedestal at the moment.
Thanks :D ! I didn't use any Kiln because I used air drying clay (doesn't require firing). It's good if you're debuting or doesn't have a big budget (aka me). As a result, I didn't hollow it.
Thanks! Also I just finised making my clay hand! :D I did the ''live long and prosper spock hand'' Near the end of making it thoug I had to actually cut it in half so I could hollow it out :'( But either way it turned out great, with all of the details I put in ( lines ect :D ) Tanks for elping me with it lol Your video really elped me get te shape of the hand and fingers! :D Have a great day btw! love the video :)
Hello Clara. I see this movie is already 9 months old. I hope you have continued since. Other sculptures. You are so talented. Thank you for this great movie.
Thanks a lot for this sweet message :) I did a lot of other artworks, you can check them out on my instagram if you're interested: instagram.com/claramicheau_/

Oha. I've looked at it. You go in all directions. Painting, drawing, photography, modeling, ... cool. I like this one very much: instagram.com/p/BFbpl7wx5QR/ I hope you make a sculpture again soon. I follow you. ;)
Thank you so much !! I'm kind of crazy about art so I want to try everything. I'm planning on doing a hand sculpture for a new video so you'll surely see more of that :) Thanks for your support, it means a lot to me
Great video! I even learned some useful things from it that i'm going to take in mind next time i'm trying sth... Are you familiar with the bones in the hand i mean do you just imagine everything or you are following a picture? Keep going its awesome!
Thanks a lot ! I hadn't (and still haven't) had the courage to memorize the inner anatomy of a hand so, to answer your question, I'm following a picture. Actually, the hand I sculpted is my hand :) I took a bunch of pictures with different perspectives and opened them on my laptop. Also, while sculpting, I keep comparing my sculpture with my actual hand. Having a 3D accurate reference is really usefull ^^
Thanks a lot ! I don't really have a brand to recommend sadly because the art store where I buy my stuff don't have a lot of choices :/ I think the best for you would be to go ask directly somebody at an art store or a sculpting store (if there is one where you live). I hope you can find something great !
Hey Walyco, how much clay did you use? I'm having trouble finding a seller that will get me clay in bulk like you have. I'm just getting started, but what I have planned would probably require quite a bit of it, and I would hate running short.
Hi Luciano ! Sadly, I don't know precisely. I bought my clay in an art supplies shop for amateurs (it's a brand store all over my country). It's really basic because you don't have to "bake" it. It's also not pricy. Where do you live ? I might be able to help you ?
+Walyco I live in Argentina, sadly clay in bulk is nearly impossible to get here, and the basic 200gr package costs quite a bit considering how little you can do (i'm more interested in stuff like this).
I used a type of air drying grey clay. You can easly find it in an art store :) It's not really high quality though :/ Concerning the water, the clay will dry out because of the air (water will evaporate and the clay will solidify). Because of that, when you are not working, put some humid tissues on your sculpture then a plastic bag over it. Also, you can use water to make the clay more malleable (a spray can be a good idea). However, pay attention to the amount of water you use because your clay can become weak it will collapse. Sorry for my approximative english, I hope I answered your questions :0 Also good luck with sculpting, I wish you a lot of fun ^^
Hi! Really amazing work! I'm interested in trying sculpting and was wondering what that liquid you used at the end on the hand was and what it's purpose was. Thank you, I'd be very grateful for a reply!
Actually I didn't use clay that require firing :) It's air dry clay. The problem is that it cracks and break really easly (which is a shame when you put so much work in it). I never hollowed a sculpture... I'm sorry, I can't help you :( (I will try it one day tho)
Lot of research on the internet and practice :) Also working intelligently (constantly having a critic eye throughout the process). Everybody can learn it !
Thank you so much ! Actually I used a clay that you don't have to fire. It's self-curing. You just leave it without plastic bag around it and it will slowly dry. However, if you have the possibility to fire your clay I would go for this option. Mine is really frail and I already broke one or two finger (which I fixed but still).
Fuck this is amazing, I have to do something similar for art and people say it should be easy for me because I'm good at drawing but I can't do anything like this!
Length of finger bones, especially pinkie , are all wrong. You need to spend some time with calipers . You waste time finishing when your basic form is wrong! Imagine if that pinkie were straightened, it would be way too long
This is just amazing!! I'm doing this in pottery class but I'm doing it holding a baseball is there any tips you can give me anything would really help! Again your work of art is just jaw dropping!! Here's a link to what my goal is thank you!!!!www.elite-view.com/art/Sports_Athletics/Baseball/superstock_106-589a-fb~Hand-Holding-Baseball-Posters.jpg
I'm so sorry for being so late to answer you ! Thank you so much ;_; ! Did you finished your sculpture already ? If yes, I would be really happy to see a picture if it's possible :D If not, my tips would be to do the hand not too much inclined (the ball weight might make the hand break if it's not well supported). And play attention to the "negative" aeras (such as below the ball) because sometimes clay slowly collapse.
+Walyco It's all good! Glad you replied either way! I really love your work!! I finished making it I just need to fire it and paint it thank you so much for the tips you have given me I will follow them for some other projects in the future!! :)
a bee flew into my room while i was watching this, i have to take a badminton racket to hit it but the impact made it flew into my bowl of papaya ....... i'm sadden by this.
