Finally an interpretation where she is as ugly as she was supposed to be! In the original Greek myth she was always a monster, had two other siblings as well. It was only in the Roman story that Ovid wrote there came about the more sympathetic version of her where she was a victim (or prideful enough to boast she was prettier than Athena depending on which version you read)
@xdtweety7007

@LifeLongArtist
@LifeLongArtist 3 месяца назад
Version I read was that she was a priestess at a temple to Athena and sworn to maidenhood for Athenas sake, until Poseidon wooed Medusa(she figured hey, it’s a god, I must be a real catch, who could say no?), and they, um….DANCED in Athenas temple, which pissed her off royally. Athena couldn’t do anything much to Poseidon, but she transformed Medusa into a monster midway through their….dance. Poseidon was freaked out when he realized what happened and ran off
@HaliaStone
@HaliaStone 3 месяца назад
@@LifeLongArtist i've read that one too. There's another version where Poseidon raped Medusa after she refused and it honestly makes Athena look worse since she's punishing a victim because she can't touch Poseidon. (Which i find bullshit in itself that the gods couldn't be punished. Ares was trialed and locked in a damn jar xD)
@refulgent_fanta
@refulgent_fanta 3 месяца назад
Personally I like Ovid's version of the myth. If I remember correctly, all Medusa wanted was to be left alone. But Athena's punishment didn't end with turning her into a monster that nobody can ever look at. The goddess made sure that every schmuck with dreams of glory will bother her.

Classical Historian here! Love the video so much, can’t wait to share it with my coworkers and friends. You’ve captured Medusa so perfectly here! I think you captured the fear of Medusa so well! Amazing work.

She was 100% a victim. Supposedly her beauty was said to rival that of Aphrodite, she was a follower of Athena who was jealous of her. Neptune saw her and wanted her, he then chased her into Athena’s temple and savagely r*ped her and as you can imagine Athena was so enraged at Medusa(victim shaming) that she damned Medusa to be what she today thus making her hideous and her hatred for humanity

@@steph8030593 there's no account of Medusa being compared to Aphrodite And she wasn't a victim of SA in Greek Mythology Hesiod, Theogony 270 ff (trans. Apart from the yassification of Medusa, her entire story also changed in Roman times: it was Ovid who decided to make her a victim of Poseidon's asssault and Athena's punishment. The original monster picture is just a blank picture - but I think you can do better, I think you can make a a sculpture of the absence of a creature, showing the invisible nature of the stalker, foot prints, distorted clouds, moved foliage etc, blood splatter hanging in the air, rain or snow 'floating' a victim being suspended mid air?. GOOD LUCK - if you decide to accept this challenge - work in any medium you like of course.

Cerberus would be an amazing follow up to Medusa, as some of the earliest depictions describe it as having snakes emerging from it's body or having multiple snake tails. In fact, the oldest written description was from Hesiod's _Theogony_ and describes Cerberus as having 50 heads. An interpretation based on the older texts that I love but so rarely see is one of Cerberus with the more common 3 dog heads, and an additional 47 snakes to match Hesiod's description of Echidna and Typhon's part-hound part-serpent child.

Cerberus!!!! I completely agree. He's been my favorite Greek myth since I was 4. I've owned any action figure or comic growing up. I'm bordering 40 now, and I no longer have my stuff. But seeing you sculpt him would be awesome. I'd love to see your interpretation!

The Minotaur would be awesome. It’s simple but is an absolute necessity for monsters drawing/sculpting series, especially if you’re starting with a Greek theme.

The original story held Medusa as a mortal Gorgon, born with the ability/curse to turn living things to stone upin meeting their gaze. She was the mother of monsters. She wasnt a tragic rape victim to Poseidon or a beautiful priestess and devotee to Athena. This is incredible.

I've always enjoyed drawing but you've inspired me to try sculpting too. Your channel is super entertaining as well as instructive, thanks for these amazing videos! PS.: I already liked the sculpture in white, but I LOVED how it turned out after you painted it, those last steps really brought it to life!

Love it! I think that coloring your monster gave it more depth and truly brought it to life! I can’t wait to see many more monsters to come. Something I think would be really cool would be to have a panoramic shot of all your monsters so far as at the end of your videos.

Omg I’m also a Melbournian - love to see a creator being realistic about the challenges that can arise 😂 It was such a crazy storm - I didn’t lose power but trees in my yard and all through my street fell and blocked roads/hit houses Good on you for still working through that🥳
