Agalychnis callidryas, known as the red-eyed tree frog, is a colourful, slender medium sized frog, most prominent feature of this frog is its eyes, and they have narrow pupils that run vertically. Their body is eye catching with the bright green, with stripes of yellow and blue along its sides.
This frog large red eyes are not only aid in their ability to see at night, but also serve as a defensive adaptation through deimatic behaviour. That when detects an approaching predator; it abruptly opens its eyes and stares at the predator. The sudden appearance of the red eyes may startle the predator, giving the frog a chance to flee.
They have orange or red colour foot, and since they are arboreal frogs and spent majority of their life on top of the trees. They have tiny sticky pads on their toes allowing them to cling onto leaves without fear of falling in the ground. The skin on its back is thick and rough, but its belly is soft and more fragile.
An arboreal hylid native to Neotropical rainforests where it ranges from Mexico, through Central America, to Colombia. It is sometimes kept in captivity. The scientific name of the red-eyed treefrog, Agalychnis. callidryas, comes from Greek words kalos (beautiful) and dryas (a tree or wood nymph).
They do mating during Costa Rica’s rainy season, and female deposits their fertilized eggs underneath a leaf. And when they hatch, tiny tadpoles fall in to the ground, wiggling into the puddles that will become their home for 80 days until they become juvenile frog, and after that they look for the trees in where they live the rest of their lives typically 5 years long.
Red eyed tree frogs are insectivores, eating crickets, moths, grasshoppers, flies, and other insects. On average males are 2 inches long and females are slightly bigger at around 3 inches
