The Sculpture Theater in the Aixoni Quarry, the work of Nella Golanda, in the Municipality of Glyfada is not particularly well known, both as a work of sculpture and architecture, and as a theater space that has hosted important events. It is a large-scale sculptural installation and at the same time a clear architectural gesture, realized in the inactive quarry of Axoni on an area of 6 hectares of loose rocks and collapses. Golanda realizes, as she says, a crystalline structure, a large sculpture, 40 meters long, whose image alternates under the movement of the sun and the fall of water through rainfall, which nestles in superimposed special configurations. The theater is a large sculptural work in the low reaches of Ymittos in the area of Axoni in the Municipality of Glyfada. The current area of Aixoni has been identified by archaeologists with the homonymous ancient Athenian municipality. In the area, very close to the theater, a stone slab was found in 1819 on which is written a lease contract for the area, from the 4th century BC. The place where it is built was an ancient theater. In fact, Sophocles had taught his first tragedies in it.
The Sculpture Theater was built in the mid-80s on the site of the old Axoni quarry. The opening of the Axoni theater took place in 1991. During the first years of its operation, it hosted excellent cultural events during the summer months, which included quality music and theater productions. A special case of an artist, Nella Golanda passed away in May 2023 at the age of 82, leaving behind an important work. Golanda was one of the few, if not the only, Greek artist to hold the title of Urban Landscape Sculptor. He studied Engraving, Mosaic and Book Art at the Athens School of Fine Arts in 1965, and was the first honorary member of the Panhellenic Union of Landscape Architects.
