Scutoid September: Papercraft Instructions 

Hearing Vi takes me back to middle school and it's heartwarming to hear her again

As a molecular biologist I enjoy the fact that the mathematical part of scutoid can be handled by someone else. Yet I can still appreciate the result.. I give Scutoid september 8/8 faces.. except the Infiniscoots since one of them only have 7 faces.. I'll let you mathematicians handle that one..

Big fan of Scutoid September so far

I remember finding this channel during middle school and it made me love math finally after failing so many times. I now have a bachelor in CS thanks to Vi ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Vi is one of, if not the first, educational RU-vidrs I ever watched. Her videos and doodles got me through high school and my engineering degree. I’ve bonded with friends and teachers over flexagons, and fallen asleep to the calming vibe of all her videos. Unquestionably one of the greats. Thank you Vi 🙏🏻

I just printed a bunch out to take to my mom's house this weekend!! She is a Montessori teacher who just started her own highschool, and she's been very stressed about permits and building codes. I think this will be a very fun and chill activity for us to do together. Thanks, Vi!

Vi's videos inspired me to enjoy maths back in primary school, and now here I am studying advanced maths in year 11. I'm not even getting good grades, I just stay in the class because it's fun. :)

Vi the first time I saw one of your videos was the my first year teaching high school math. I heard you say, "he pretends he's teaching algebra and the students pretend to be taught algebra and everyone else involved in the system is too invested to do anything but pretend to believe them both." And it changed the entire trajectory of my creer away from teaching subjects like AP Calculus for little more than the meager prestige to working to reach the kids the system leaves behind. Most of my students in the past 5 years had failed algebra 1 at least once. It was my job to repair their relationship with Math that some other teacher turned from a subject of curiosity and discovery to something more akin to having an abusive ex. I always show your videos, and most of my students leave loving math and knowing that learning is about becoming the best version of yourself and being empowered to take on whatever challenges life throw at you or you chose to tackle. Thank you. Oh and you're the reason I have to watch every other youtube video at 1.25x speed now.

If you put tabs on the edges to be joined you can put a tiny amount of glue on them and it makes for a better final product. Also see if your printer will handle cardstock. Makes for a more robust scutoid.

ten years ago when i was first becoming obsessed with modular papercraft, i found your channel and George Hart's Encyclopedia of Polyhedra at around the same time. wasn't until years later that I finally made the connection. :)

the inside out thing is such a great demonstration of what mirror symmetry is, which happens to be a super important concept in understanding chirality of compounds in organic chemistry!

It would be neat to have a mould and use it to make "casts" with self-hardening clay or plaster or something similar. Especially the infinite one would be worth trying.

thoroughly enjoying this! I find myself often rewatching old videos, so I'm very excited for scutoid september

you can also add tabs and glue them for a clean look! it can be tricky to find the space for a full tab, but you only need it on one side for each seam, and as a papercrafter i found it a lot more intuitive than taping from the inside

omg, this is the perfect activity for an introductory course on industrial quality control processes... we had a similar activity, but we had to produce origami diamonds; each person in the team oversees one aspect of the assembly and so on.... but i feel doing scutoids would at least keep ppl slightly more engaged.... or maybe i'm just projecting my nerdness onto other 9_9 anyways, Great video !! uuuh... hope you're having a nice existence n_ñ

We 3D printed the scutoid pair last week and will continue with the paper models next. Several students have asked about the possibility of making a huge spheroid shape out of scutoids, would that be possible?
