"It is a time of unrest in 1920s Europa. The ashes from the first great war still darken the snow. The capitalistic city-state known simply as “The Factory”, which fueled the war with heavily armored mechs, has closed its doors, drawing the attention of several nearby countries.
Scythe is an engine-building game set in an alternate-history 1920s period. It is a time of farming and war, broken hearts and rusted gears, innovation and valor. In Scythe, each player represents a character from one of five factions of Eastern Europe who are attempting to earn their fortune and claim their faction's stake in the land around the mysterious Factory. Players conquer territory, enlist new recruits, reap resources, gain villagers, build structures, and activate monstrous mechs.
Each player begins the game with different resources (power, coins, combat acumen, and popularity), a different starting location, and a hidden goal. Starting positions are specially calibrated to contribute to each faction’s uniqueness and the asymmetrical nature of the game (each faction always starts in the same place).
Scythe gives players almost complete control over their fate. Other than each player’s individual hidden objective card, the only elements of luck or variability are “encounter” cards that players will draw as they interact with the citizens of newly explored lands. Each encounter card provides the player with several options, allowing them to mitigate the luck of the draw through their selection. Combat is also driven by choices, not luck or randomness.
Scythe uses a streamlined action-selection mechanism (no rounds or phases) to keep gameplay moving at a brisk pace and reduce downtime between turns. While there is plenty of direct conflict for players who seek it, there is no player elimination.
Every part of Scythe has an aspect of engine-building to it. Players can upgrade actions to become more efficient, build structures that improve their position on the map, enlist new recruits to enhance character abilities, activate mechs to deter opponents from invading, and expand their borders to reap greater types and quantities of resources. These engine-building aspects create a sense of momentum and progress throughout the game. The order in which players improve their engine adds to the unique feel of each game, even when playing one faction multiple times."

I've had this game for 2 years and i've been intimidated too much to play it. I only ever play solo and i'm normally good with heavy games but this one terrified me. This video was great for the set up and after watching it i will follow it and set up so that i can get it to the table this weekend. I'm now going to watch the next video and hopefully my courage wont fail me :)

Woohoo! I’ve heard this one is scary to get rolling with. Glad the videos help with that. I can tell you that once you get going you’ll enjoy it! Still their best game ever made to date.

WOW. I thought Gloomhaven was overwhelming. I have steered clear of this because didn't know how it would solo. However,if you're playing it must be good. I'll have to watch intently.

Hey Eric! It really isn't as bad as it looks and once you get going there's a handful of tricky spots to get used to with the Automa. I'm not perfect, so I may slip up but the community here is awesome at catching things. This is a game that will never leave my collection. :)

The game is hard enough to learn, why did you make it more complex with playing with 3 instead of just 1 plus the AI…. Now I want to buy a second automa set. 😊
@RollingSolo
@RollingSolo Год назад
I found two AI to be a great sweet spot once you have the rules down with one. Cheers! 😄

Where can you purchase another set of automa cards without buying the entire game again? Soooo looking forward to the next episode
@RollingSolo
@RollingSolo 6 лет назад
I've seen them in my local store, Stonemaier Games and a whole bunch of online board game stores carry them. The only tricky thing is that the game is extremely popular. So sometimes they're sold out. But you can be certain they will be re-stocked.

Nice work, will be good to see how it pans out. No wind gambit however ? :)

@RollingSolo 6 лет назад
Hey Moxnzl! For this I decided it would be better not to include it for learning purposes for the masses. However, at some other time I may be able to do a playthrough with expansions in! That would be a blast!

Very nice video, man. Say, which sleeves are you using for the larger cards? They seem to fit very well
@RollingSolo
@RollingSolo 5 лет назад
I believe those are from FFG. I’d have to check to be 100% sure but they were. Super tight fit.
@perceval6947
@perceval6947 5 лет назад
@@RollingSolo hmm I'm fairly certain the FFG Tarot sleeves would fit pretty well with their 70 mm width, but are too long with 120mm, whereas the cards are 110mm
@RollingSolo
@RollingSolo 5 лет назад
I believe that is what I used. I don’t have many large sleeves at all only the FFG Tarot sized. It was a super tight fit width wise but they worked fine!

Hi Adam, Really enjoying your content, thank you so much for the great videos. This may be a dumb question, but which sleeves are you using for Scythe? I am looking to purchase sleeves, but the sizes seem a bit odd? The sleeves you have look like perfect fits, though. Thank you, from a fellow solo board gamer.
@RollingSolo
@RollingSolo 6 лет назад
I think I used Mayday for all of mine. What size...I don't know off hand but BGG would have the answer for sure!

Hi, I'm curious how long of a game is the solo portion. Thank you.
@RollingSolo
@RollingSolo 5 лет назад
Hey RB! That’s a tougher question to answer. I’d say it probably took about an hour or a bit over an hour. Mind you I knew the rules. If you’re learning I expect it to be longer. :)

Ohh! Search for STM608 on Google. They’re available in online board game stores, FLGS and anywhere else. Shop around to get the best price. They aren’t hard to find and they look amazing!
