SD40-2s for five days on the BNSF

With the economy picking up again, the freight railroads have seen a spike in traffic. Due to this, classic EMDs like the SD40-2, are once again roaming the mainline out of Northtown Yard. In this clip, we'll see five days of SD40-2 action on the BNSF mainine. There is even an all green SD40-2 trio that'll we'll chase on the Staples Sub. This is truly a neat time to be trackside on the BNSF, and see the classic SD40-2 leading out on the mainline as it was meant to be.

Spectacular video footage of a classic locomotive. I never tire of watching SD40-2s cruising along at track speed ........... the most beautiful diesel freight locomotive created. I really enjoy your videos .......... and it's nice to see that Spring has sprung in the land of 10,000 lakes! Thanks for the great video. Mike

Thank you for the comment! I feel the same way when it comes to SD40-2s; they look good, sound good, and are simply a sharp looking locomotive that keeps going and going. Spring is here! We are expecting temps in the 90s in the next few days now...

Thank you for the comment. While they might be, seeing them in true everyday mainline service is fairly hard to see. For the time being, its a fairly regular occurrence for solid sets of 40-2s on these trains. Enjoy it while you can, things can change fast on the railroads!

peter to bad that the railroads for cost effective measures can't take more units emd low nose sd40-2, 50 45 and so on out of storage like up,pan am, railroads have done, as they say theres no comparison in the cost of the big dash 8 and 9, which cost big bucks, new, and also the look of the sd40 locomotives is second to none ;

@SD457500
@SD457500 4 года назад
Thanks for the comment! This was just shot in 2018, and these STILL get out on the road daily. The hump sets usually have RCO equipment on them, and are coupled up to a slug of sorts. BNSF has gone as far as putting PTC equipment in a few of their 40s, such as the 1940, so it can lead. Its a fairly common sight to see these running between Northtown and Dilworth these days.

Yet they don't have any C30-7's on trains when they're plainly more powerful so BNSF wouldn't have to use as many. Or SD45s for that matter if traffic's increasing. But I can see why they're using SD40-2s and we have to enjoy them while they're still around.
@SD457500
@SD457500 6 лет назад
Thanks for the comment. Those units are long gone from the BNSF, thus why you don't see them.
@trainiax
@trainiax 5 лет назад
Many C30-7's were retired in large numbers in the early 2000's - for two reasons: 1) they were less reliable and more maintenance-intensive than the SD40-2, and 2) they had a much more limited parts supply. The SD40-2 benefits not only from high reliability, but also a ready supply of parts from many aftermarket sources. Furthermore, although the larger GE traction motors had perhaps a slight advantage in low-speed lugging, the C30-7 was not any more powerful than the SD40-2; they both produced 3000 horsepower and had a similar tractive effort when built to the same weight. The C30-7 did have a 5% to 8% fuel efficiency advantage over the SD40-2, but it was not enough to offset the other factors against it.

@@SD457500 just that whistling sound even when they idle, and then gets higher pitched as they're throttled up. Presumably new locomotives have turbos, too, but none of them make that lovely whistling sound. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cIpHWUFu-Go.html
@douglasskaalrud6865
@douglasskaalrud6865 4 года назад
It's the turbo. The pitch changes up to notch 6 and then the sound disappears. On the 645 the turbo is run by the shaft until there is enough exhaust gas pressure to spin the turbo independently which disengages the clutch. I grew up listening to hordes of Soo Line Dash-2's at Shoreham yard idling away under the sand tower. Only thing that sounds better than an idling turbo 645 is several of them idling at once and one or two being run up and down again. I'd love to have a recording of that sound for the engine facility on my model railroad.
