SD70MAC In Cab Tour

This is my first time ever in the cab of a SD70MAC. If I sound very goofy and nerdy in this video, it's because if you are true railfan you can't help but get totally ecstatic when you're given the opportunity to get in the engineer's seat of one of these beasts. The story here was, I was taking pictures on the side of the road and the engineer invited me in! I was one lucky guy! Anyway enjoy!!!

Lucky u, SD70MAC! The 1st engine I got to climb on was an ex-conrail SD60 (6703 blue paint) I was so excited when I got to the controls! Had a rusted toilet, yuk. They wouldve gave me the medkit as a sovinir but it was bolted. I blew the horn! We were idling 100ft from a crossing and a car came around the turn while I was blowing the horn, he stopped dead in his tracks, I scared the s**t out of him. U bounce around from all the power inside. To get on a loco, find a red signal idler.

@valareksic EOT = End Of Train air pressure, it is the brake pipe pressure reading the EOT sends up to the lead unit. When it drops to zero it means all the air has gone out of the brake pipe, usually that means the train has gone into emergency.

When I was a kid in the 1970's it used to be easy to get cab rides. All you had to do was ask, and they would wave you up, and you could ride with the crew all over town. Shame those days are gone.

a few nights ago at work the coal yard was short a person and nobody would come in. So A buddy of mine in the coal yard asked me if I wanted to drive the train while he unloaded it. It was so fun that it should be illegal. Starting a 100 car train on a slight incline really makes the engine work. The engine that I drove was a SD9043mac. When the day crew came in he told them that he unloaded half of the train by himself. They cann't figure out haw he did it. I Cann't wait to do it again.

the video is much longer than this, but I had to trim it because I went on gushing like a school girl I didn't want to sound stupid now. But I had the best time of my life. You'll notice because some of the conversation seems cut-off. LOL The guy was really nice!

@valareksic I believe that meant the air pressure on the rear end of the train wasnt correct or something.

Dude that is awesome!! I wish I got to get up in one of these big modern loco's. All in due time though, once I graduate, I'm going to work for UP! Tell you what though, if there are any train enthusiasts out there that want to drive a train, you can go to the Portola Railroad Museum in California and rent one for an hour for like $100! I've done it a couple times already and I'm 21!

Yeah, thanks! I talked with one of my cousins roommates who worked for UP for a while and he said that there is a real negative attitude toward rail-fan railroad employees and I think it is just for that reason. Thanks for the heads up though! Appreciate it! Have you tried to get hired with any other company, or did you get picked up by NS?

An even cooler thing happened...for some reason I didn't get it on video but while I was on the train, the train he was waiting on passed us! That was awesome being on a train while another passed! Truly an unforgettable experience!

@fyadcorp

@fyadcorp If the train had pushers it could mean a comm loss as well, it doesn't necessarily mean it went into emergency... and since you didn't hear the PCS valve open up the unit you were in it was likely just a comm loss.

A tip for you...when you go for an interview, DO NOT display any RAILFAN attitudes...they will NOT hire you if they know you are a huge railfan...main reason is because you are a "safety" hazard because they think you'll be more focused on the loco rather than the work at hand. At least that's what NS told me...then again UP could be different. If I were you though I wouldn't show much enthusiasm when you go for the interview. Good luck though!

The EOT device monitors the air pressure in the rear, I can only assume that the train pipe lost air pressure.

I watched it like 5 times 5 stars! I to was just taking pictures and they just invited me on sometimes a crew gets lonely while idle, but you're luckier, you got to throw the throttle, but I blew the horn :D. Not a big fan of desktop controls, stands are better, either way, horsepower is horsepower. Next time they said they'll have a GE for me to bounce around in. Did they show you the flares? You get the perfect view up there to!
