I've been trying for years to get a good recording of a classic roots blown emd and this is by far the best one I've ever heard. You've got a great balance of intake and exhaust here. I'd love to put this into a train sim.
Oh it's quite significant when you're down wind of the radiators on a hot and sunny day. Figuring about 110 gallons of diesel per hour at full load, that comes out to about 4,000 kilowatts thermal. Figuring roughly a 25-30% thermodynamic efficiency, that translates to about 2.7 to 3 megawatts of waste heat coming out of those radiators. Or roughly 1,875 household 120 volt space heaters. Standing inside the engine compartment while one of these is running is like a sauna. There's a reason each of the radiator fans and traction motor blowers [except the front truck] is driven by a 10 horsepower 3 phase motor!
I grew up in the 60s next to the C&O yard in Walbridge Ohio, the sounds of these 567 prime movers to this day can put me to sleep! When i am working on my HO layout or my electronics bench in the basement i will often fire up one of my sound equipped locos and just let it idle, thats music to my heart and soul. I also have a live steam railroad, along with steam i run electric powered diesles, one of them is an SD 60 that uses an HO sound decoder to provide sounds for it. I can turn that on and again just let it play!
