Quite a different product. Seems good enough for small jobs. For portable work that has low advantage over USB-C PD iron with PD powerbank. Sure, a more compact but give an iron a 10000 to 20000mAh PD power bank and you have lot more power. I did not see a test if it works without a cradle or if you need usb power for it anyway for portable jobs.
@DirkFedermann
@DirkFedermann Год назад
This plus a capable Powerbank and you are suited for almost everything. I like that they use a Super Capacitor instead of a battery, because the battery will probably fail after a couple of years - especially if you don't solder frequently.

I think the price is kind of ok but I think I’ll wait till one that accepts jbc tips comes out as you get a better tip selection, at the moment I just use one that connects to a powerbank and uses jbc tips, obviously that’s not my main iron as I got like 10 other stations including jbc, metcal, Hakko, weller, ersa and so on

supercapacitor I finally see them in devices
@electrodacus
@electrodacus Год назад
That is not a supercapacitor but a Lithium battery 2.5V to 4.2V range with 300mA capacity designed for high cycle life. The 750F capacitance is just the equivalent but it is not a capacitor. Cycle life seems to be around 50k cycles before capacity is at 70% of original. Not only that but there is also a calendar degradation and if stored fully charged will likely need to be replaced after 2 or 3 years.
@joshdau
@joshdau Год назад
Show me a lithium-ion battery that only degrades to 70% capacity after 50,000 cycles...
@electrodacus
@electrodacus Год назад
@@joshdau They did not provide exact details of how those 50k cycles where made. This battery is in a 1840 size format and has only 300mA where a slightly larger 1865 can be found in 3000mA capacity so an order of magnitude larger capacity. If you take that 3000mA and only do 10% DOD cycles somewhere in the middle of the voltage range it can do 50k cycles with no problem. So this battery was optimized for cycle life to the detriment of energy density. Some other Lithium chemistry like LiFePO4 can do 500k cycles at 5% DOD. In any case my comment was about the fact that this has nothing to do with a super-capacitor. Super-capacitors have such a low energy density that it will not be worth to combine with a Lithium battery. Also super-capacitors are 2.5 - 2.7V so you will need two of them in series to parallel with a Lithium battery that charges to 4.2V. If they could have used a supercapacitor then it will have made this a product that could be used for decades with no problems but since it is a Lithium battery it will likely end in the landfill in about 5 years.
@jaro6985
@jaro6985 Год назад
@@electrodacus Voltage drop is linear which makes it a supercap to me. LIC1840Q3R8757 "A lithium-ion capacitor (LIC or LiC) is a hybrid type of capacitor classified as a type of supercapacitor. It is called a hybrid because the anode is the same as those used in lithium-ion batteries and the cathode is the same as those used in supercapacitors"
@electrodacus
@electrodacus Год назад
@@jaro6985 What they show there (in the spec sheet) is a high discharge rate 1C and 2C and at those sort of discharge rates a Lithium battery will discharge fairly linearly as well. But a supercapacitor will not have that discharge curve shown in that manual. When half discharged a capacitor voltage will not be at half the voltage range but much higher voltage. This so called hybrid capacitor has a capacity of 1Wh and in same size 1840 you can buy a 60F 2.7V supercapacitor with just 0.06Wh. So if you want to build a hybrid supercap/battery then the capacitor part can not represent even 5% of the total. Hi energy density lithium cells have a flat charge discharge curve if you keep them in the recommended range typical 4.1 to 3.3V

i have a t12 i made with 18650's i take with me lasts a couple hours, you can actually buy a pre made psu board from ksger and others that is designed for 18650's this is okay but for the time you get to solder vs the time it takes to charge i just dont know if its worth it. also they should have went with 100 tips vs the 80 imo with these. but the 80 may have been easier to drive. imo they should have just went with a battery inside vs the cap. i wonder if one could change out the cap for a battery

Why do you think it'll degrade? Couldn't the same thing be said of something with a lithium battery ? It is a capacitor after all and I hazard a capacitor will survive many more cycles than any battery.

It should survive significantly longer than a LiPo cell, but supercapacitors do fail over time with increased ESR.
@wafu6058
@wafu6058 Год назад
Well, these are CONSTANTLY cycling charges. If you cycled a lipo as many times as this.. it wouldn’t last long. These are probably going to start to degrade in a year of regular use imo, yes that’s longer than a lipo, but in the grand scheme of things it might not be practically long.. but time will tell as I can’t find much on this particular cap

@@wafu6058 Its right in the datasheet (LIC1840Q3R8757), 50,000 cycles at least. If you solder for 5mins from one cycle, thats like 170 days of continuous soldering, it wont degrade in a year.

With 750 Farad the capacitor inside the soldering iron would hold as much energy as 10 (!! TEN !!) AA NiMh Batteries, exactly 26730.8 milliamperes houra. Even more unbekieveable that it should have double the voltage, compared to NiMh cells. In my calxulationn, i even did not take any voltage differential into account. Something is not quite right here... Maybe i just can not calxulate any more or something else here smells like fish!
