I’m Robert K3RRR and this video is all about using the SDRplay to listen to the ham radio satellites and how to automatically adjust the frequency for Doppler compensation.
Here is your list of ingredients for the Doppler control elixir for your SDRplay - assuming you’re running Windows 10 like I am.
1. SDRuno - A free program that takes full advantage of the SDRplay. There’s a ton of SDR software packages available and many of them are great. However, the software is specifically designed around SDRplay so, for me, it makes sense to go through the learning curve one more time for one more SDR software package. At the time that I recorded this video, the latest version was 1.22 which is what I’m using for this tutorial.
2. PstRotator - A fantastic program that lets you control your rig via OmniRig, control your rotators if you’re using them (although they are not required if you’re using a handheld antenna) and it does Doppler control along with satellite tracking. The cost of the software is €20 which last time I looked is about $21 or $22. This is one of my best ham radio purchases and one of the best supported software programs I’ve ever bought for business or pleasure. The key to this working for Doppler control of SDRuno is that they both use OmniRig.
3. Com0Com - It’s a free null modem program that lets you identify two virtual comports that will allow you to link PstRotator and SDRuno. Download the software and unzip it to whatever subdirectory you want and run setup. Set up your Com0Com pair… I chose to define these as com 15 and com 16 since these are not in use by my system. Note these need to be COM 20 and below. Once this is set up you don’t have to worry about it again if you add it to your startup menu. Note: I am a BIG fan of VSPE - Virtual Serial Ports Emulator and use it every day to share com ports. HOWEVER, it cannot be used as a null model for this application - hence, the need for Com0Com. This one point costs me hours. I know it SHOULD work - but does not.
4. That’s all you need to be able to listen to both FM and linear birds and have the Doppler frequency changes done for you automatically.
I’ve also uploaded several other videos here to my RU-vid channel that are various recorded satellite passes, of various satellites, that demonstrate how great PstRotator and SDRuno work together.
You might want to take a peek at a few of these because one: if you’re active in the satellites you might hear your own melodious voice… 2 if you are new to satellites, these videos will show what it’s like to work the birds, the quality of the communications - and they also show some of the good and bad operating practices if you plan on making the plunge into the wonderful world of amateur satellites.
73 folks…
Thanks again for taking time to watch this video - and If you like what you saw and heard please subscribe, like and share…
See on the birds!

Also, if you’re interested in ham radio satellites, I also asked that you consider becoming a member with me of AMSAT North America. These folks do amazing things on a volunteer basis which is why we have so many amateur satellites circling our globe right now. All these ham radio satellites do not just happen by accident. There is an overwhelming amount of work - along with an unbelievable money - that goes into each bird.
The dues are cheap and it is one ham club that is definitely worth joining! To become a member, just click:

Robert, you did it again... you must be my Satellite workin' elmer. I learned how to mount my elk antenna to a camera tripod and many other tricks from you... I purchased a RSP1A... and here is this video. You Rock. Thank you. I will try this combo setup to listen a bit, but I want to eventually use my FT-857D for the transmit radio. I have the Arrow Dual band ground plane, a 2 meter j-pole to get started listening. Please keep 'em coming. 73.

Thanks, Patrick! I really appreciate the nice words - especially coming from someone who is as experienced in hamradio as you are. I first got on the satellites using my FT 897D in my FT 857D. I especially love the 857D - I've had three of them! I kept selling them - and then going back and buying them again. Unfortunately, it has a problem with Doppler control for most of the tracking software packages including PstRotator. This problem has to do with the edict of Yaesu about constantly writing to the eeprom - at least that is the way I remember the issue. Nevertheless, go for it! 73 de Robert K3RRR

Hi Robert, I arrived here through our discussion on Facebook last week. Excellent video, thank you for sharing what you've learned. This setup is exactly what I've been hoping to put together for working satellites full-duplex. My new RSP1A arrived a couple days ago so I hope copy your configuration to start receiving satellites. Then add my FT-991A to the mix and start transmitting. I've been planning to use SDR-Console for my setup, as it includes satellite tracking and rig control. It is very encouraging to see that there is at least one alternative. I expect I'll experiment with both, and I'll keep you updated. Thanks again and 73.

Hi Alex… Hope you're enjoying your new SDRplay RSP 1A… It is a genuinely superb device if it's anything like my RSP2. I have birthday "presents" arriving today from @YaesuUSA ....two separate packages: my unrepaired G-5500 az rotator/controller....AND my new-with-a-1-yr-warranty AZ rotator I had to buy to get my G-5500 problem solved...HOPE to be back on the sats by this weekend...now, that's a present! Once I have the set up complete and working again, I do plan on putting together a quick video on working the satellites full duplex using the SDRplay RSP2 as the receiver. Have fun and stay tuned! 73 de Robert K3RRR PS: Let me know how well you like SDR-Console!

Robert, thanks for the video. I posted the way I did it in the files section of Yahoo's PstRotator group a while back. I used the TS2000 instead of the TS480. I Would probably not been able to figure it out so quickly if it had not been for your other videos. So double thank you for all of your videos and the effort it took to make them. Pat, K8PC

Thanks Pat...I am delighted that you find the videos helpful. When I started making this particular video, I had forgotten how many unintuitive steps were involved...so I may have overdone this step by step guide with too much detail. Either way, I hope it will help others do it faster than than it took you and me! See you on the birds, my friend! 73 de Robert K3RRR

This is in response to Michael...not sure what happened to your comment but here is the answer! Hi Michael… I am delighted that you find the video helpful especially as a beginner on the satellites! With regard to the Up / Down button on PstRotator take a look at page 22 - 23 of the PstRotator manual which you can download at: www.qsl.net/yo3dmu/ANT/PstRotator%20User%20Manual.pdf PstRotator definitely has a learning curve because it does so much… Plus Codrut, the author, is always tweaking and updating the software in response to user requests. Frankly, he is the best I've ever seen at quickly implementing requested changes on so many different aspects of his software. There are so many fantastic nuances, it really makes sense to read the manual. Hope that helps! 73 de Robert K3RRR

Why not just use sdr console with omnirig? It tracks very well. I’ve seen no issues with vspe myself. However I’m using an hf plus but looking at the rsp2 for uhf. The rtl doesn’t have the filtering that the hf plus has. Sadly airspy is tanking down the toilet and their R2 is complete garbage. Leaving the sdr play an only option for high end featured sdr. For what we use it for. “ amsat”. Many have noted that the console rsp2 together causes clipping and stuttering issues? Depending on the pc. Have you tried the combo Robert ? Thanks hope you get your rotor sorted.

Hi Robert, I have set this up as per your instructions and now have Doppler tracking happening. Thanks! However... when listening to a linear satellite I am no longer able to tune to a signal within the downlink range on SDRUno. As soon as I try and mouse-click on a new signal, the Omnirig control reverts back to whatever frequency the Satellite setup in PSTRotator is set at. I realise I can rough-tune using the buttons on PSTRotator, but isn't there a way I can click with the mouse in SDRUno on the signal I want, then have the Doppler corrections continue to be applied? Looking forward to any ideas you might have! 73 Rob G0MOH

Hi Rob, Apologies for the very slow reply… I think I answered an email to you on this but I can't remember! The only way SDRuno is able to get adjusted for Doppler is by the UP + DOWN button being depressed on PstRotator. If you try to tune away even with my ICOM 9700, the software will automatically bring you back to the tuned frequency of PstRotator. As far as I know, the only way to change this frequency is with the arrow buttons on PstRotator. I haven't tried this but the thought did occur to me - try clicking the ACQ button. With my ICOM 9700, I turn off the UP + DOWN button, tune up and down the band and when I find a signal, I push the ACQ button to lock the new transmit/receive frequencies and then turn on the the UP + DOWN button for to track Doppler from that new set of frequencies. I am not sure how this might work with SDRuno but it might give you the results you're looking for! Hope that helps! 73 de Robert K3RRR

I've followed your steps methodically, using an SDRPLAY RSP2pro and although pstrotator changes the reception mode to FM automatically on sdruno when i click the up/down button on pstrotator (so guessing omnirig is connecting them together properly), it still doesn't change the freq on sdruno or correct for doppler shift. Any ideas?

Hi Tony, make sure that the UP + DN button on PstRotator stays depressed… If it isn't depressed, frequency and Doppler corrections will not be enabled between the two programs. Likewise, make sure that you run com0com before running PstRotator and SDRuno. Also, in Omnirig, make sure that your rig type set for a Kenwood TS 440/TS 480 is shown in the video… good luck! -.- ...-- .-. .-. .-. 73 de Robert K3RRR K3RRR.com @K3TripleR RU-vid.com/user/K3RRR -.- ...-- .-. .-. .-.

Hi Robert. Thanks for answering. Yes, I had done all of that, but no joy. I did the stop start thing with your video, so that I could do each step one by one as you done them in your video. I’ ve since downloaded sdr console and used the built in satellite portion. It is working well for me, so I’ll just continue with that for now. Pity though, it cost me a 20, just to end up using something else. I guess you live and learn! 😀

I find sdruno to be just a piece of junk software package. I have sdr console working great with no fails. I get lots of crashes with the plug ins on sdruno.

SDRuno has been consistently good for me albeit I have had a crash or two for sure. I think Simon Brown did SDR Console as I recall. I have the highest regard for Simon and his amazing programming skillsets. I do have the software installed but just have not gone through the learning curve to learn yet another SDR program. If crashes became a problem like you experienced, I would probably make the jump too. 73 de Robert K3RRR
