This is probably the first shanty I ever learned. Maybe the first you learned, too. Here are nine of the 107 verses I found.
Blow the man Down - Lyrics
1. I'll sing you a song of the fish in the sea.
Wey! Hey! Blow the man down!
And trust that you'll join in the chorus with me.
Oh give me some time to Blow the man Down!
2. There was an old skipper, I don't know his name.
I know that he played him this really smart game.
3. When he was becalmed in the tropical sea.
He whistled all day, but it stirred up no breeze.
4. A seal heard his whistle and loudly did call.
I'll send you some fish and some whalefish and all.
5. Well first came the herring, the King of the Sea.
He jumped on the poop and said Captain I'll be.
6. Well next came the flat fish, they call him the skate.
If you'll be the captain then I'll be the mate.
7. Then next came the hake, he was reading a book.
Says he, I'm no sailor, I'll ship as the cook.
8. Then next came the shark with his two rows of teeth.
Cook, you mind the cabbage, and I'll mind the beef.
9. And last came the whale, he was biggest of all.
He climbed up aloft and he let each sail fall.

My grandfather was Admiral Byrd, he taught me all kinds of shanties when I was a lil boy, and this is one of my favs. This, Bully in the alley, Drunken Sailor, Leave her Jonny, and Old man (Dead Horse)(I learned it as Old Man by name instead of Dead Horse) are some of my all-time favs that lend well to my voice. I sang some when I was in the Navy for four years and everyone loved em and would join in after learning them. I was enlisted in my time before I switched over to the Army and even then, I kept singing em then and even to this day, lol. Your voice is just MADE for shanties. My Master Chief heard me one day and I started to stop, and he said, "damn it, don't you dare stop sailor, in fact, everyone learn these." Sometimes I miss my service on the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan CVN-76.

I played Assassins Creed IV Black Flag 8 years ago. I put over a 100 hours into that game back then. Through all the games I’ve played since, it still remains one of my absolute favorites. A huge part of that was your voice and the voice of Charlotte Cumberbirch. Just wanted to say I’m a huge fan of your work. 8 years later, Here’s a Health to the Company and Star of the County Down still haven’t left my playlist.

Same Shawn, I became a rower when I was in middle school. I loved sailing but the lessons were too expensive and I wanted to continue doing sports out on the water so I became a rower. I’m now a sailing instructor and get to sail during the summer with little kids and teach them to sail, I love it! AC black flag definitely was a huge part of my love for the sea and sailing. Not to mention my grandfather was in the navy during ww2 and the Korean War and my ancestors were Spanish who went to Puerto Rico (I'm guessing in the 17 or 18th century). Thank you Seán for helping instill this love of the sea and shanties to me and hopefully I can own a sailboat one day and have some crew mates to sing these songs with! Don’t get me wrong, I love rowing but it’s a back breaking sport that was first designed for slaves and nothing beats catching a strong wind in your sails.

If I am not mistaken, the word fish used to be for any animal in the water since back then the idea of evolution was just taking off and since then we have classified many species of aquatic life. Now, scientifically the word fish has more of a concrete definition but it is still a wide term for many aquatic species and is still in miss use.

Hey Sean dagher I hope your doing well and keep up the amazing shanties, I have a question for you, back when you where making the shanties for Ubisoft Assassins creed black flag, did Ubisoft allow you to pick some of the shanties that are in the game or did they have total control over what shanties were put into the game. Thanks for reading my comment I really appreciate it.
@SeanDagher
@SeanDagher 3 года назад
David Gossage, who produced the shanty and tavern song sessions, chose/found all of the songs. Dave also played flute/tin whistle on the tavern song sessions, and on La Nef's Sea Songs & Shanties album. Ubisoft required that the songs be historically justified, i.e. that they be attested from before the date that the games take place. We were also slightly limited in terms of what lyrics we could include. Aside from that, the challenge was finding enough songs to fill the games, and Dave did a great job of that.

Well, I know the verses I know, but I always look for new ones before making these videos in case there's something better. I have a few old shanty books but I also look to other singers' versions. I try to compile my new version from different ones and, like I've said, I often end up changing the verses quite a bit or making up new ones to complete a story or fill in the blanks. Actually the most common thing is making up half a verse to go with half that I like.
