Sea cucumbers, a prized delicacy in Chinese cuisine, fetch exorbitant prices in East Asia. These creatures play a crucial role in marine ecology -they vacuum the ocean floor; help coral reefs to grow and slow down the acidification of oceans.
But now a soaring demand for these creatures is luring criminal gangs and fueling a booming multimillion dollar illegal trade.
As millions of sea cucumbers get decimated, authorities and conservationists escalate their war on the poachers. Undercover Asia dives into the illegal sea cucumber trade and uncovers a global hotspot in the waters between India and Sri Lanka.

Oysters can be farmed, no? But tigers, rhinos, elephants cannot. And being a HongKonger, I do know a thing or two about the absurd reasons why Chinese ppl eat tiger (their penis believing it make them more viral) and, the elephant tusk for good luck (if such the case, it definitely did not bring elephants any luck ), rhino horn for medicine purpose (which is already analyzed containing the same composition of out nails), sea cucumbers for skin beauty. There is some truth to the idea that education can be a powerful tool in addressing social issues and promoting positive change. By providing people with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to understand and address complex problems, education can help empower individuals and communities to find solutions and make informed decisions. However, it's essential to recognize that education alone may not be sufficient to solve every issue. In some cases, it may be necessary to take additional steps, such as implementing policies or regulations, to address specific problems. Additionally, it's essential to consider the root causes of an issue and address them comprehensively and holistically. Overall, it's often best to take a multifaceted approach to address social issues, which may include education as well as other strategies and interventions.

It's often important to consider the demand for products or services that drive social issues, including the end consumer and the price they are willing to pay. By understanding the factors that contribute to demand, it may be possible to address the issue at its source and reduce the incentives for people to engage in harmful behaviours. For example, in the case of poaching, it's important to understand the motivations of the poachers and the market demand for the products they are seeking to obtain. By educating end consumers about the negative impacts of poaching and the importance of conservation, it may be possible to reduce the demand for illegal wildlife products. Additionally, it may be necessary to implement policies and regulations to reduce the supply of these products and deter poachers from engaging in this activity. Overall, it's important to consider a range of factors when addressing social issues and to take a comprehensive approach that addresses both demand and supply.

Marine aqua-culture ( marine fish farming ) is practiced in many countries to combat over fishing and combat the loss of many endangered marine species . Foremost among the many set backs to this solution however, is that unraveling their life-cycles, mimicking their natural environment or habitat artificially and even getting them to breed, can sometimes be quite challenging .

Interesting, but virtually unaddressed is the affect on the ocean corals of the world, which are dying at lightening speed. Without coral reefs, marine life entirely extinct. These facts must be a major part of the need to stop this sea cucumber market. The Chinese herb doctor didn't bother to mention it; perhaps he doesn't know or doesn't care. With this information in hand, perhaps it can help a little, but until governments help the poor, there's no way out. Sri Lanka's broke right now. I also noticed that on the restaurant menus it stated Australia as the source of the cucumber, so Australia's authorities can also have an impact on this illegal branding and fishing. Greed and poverty are killing our environment.

27,54 if they're nearly caught, all the sea cucumbers are dumped...they are just wasted and probably the ppl involved go back "fishing" ie just plucking the poor things, asap to make up for losses....the ban n high penalties seem not to be a great solution. How about educating ppl on why sea cucumbers and maintaining/protecting our wildlife and habitat is important for our planets survival would be a great way to go. The prohibition seems to not be effective (as he said then they told us not to do it) but he doesn't seem to know about the importance of habitat n wildlife preservation for ALL of US...at ALL. PS the sea cucumber plucked of that dead reef was the saddest to watch...poor thing could've really helped to start making the dead surroundings come back to health. It's enough how we pollute the ocean with chemicals, run off from factory farms, destroy it by catching way too much incl so called by-catch/by-kill, and industrial/destructive methods destroying the seafloor for just one catch, the negative impact of farming fish and finally all the plastic....we now know we ourselves eat and drink microplatics everyday (approx the size of a credit card per person). And we know little pieces of a child's balloon (bought to make them happy for a moment) can kill an endangered sea turtle ....that then never gets to reproduce, so the child will never get to see that turtle....or live on a healthy sustainable planet. Our children will have to deal with all the severe weather events, the conflicts due to climate migration, hunger, increasing armed conflicts....and increasing amounts of super bugs (because of over use of antibiotics especially in large scale animal agriculture) so they may not be able to have simple operations etc. As well as the increasing amounts of zoonotic diseases coming from our destruction of wild habitats, forcing wildlife to migrate into closer contact with us....it's very sad and frustrating. All I know is I do everything I can everyday. I avoid fast and consumerism, and only buy something if absolutely necessary, I'm actively reducing waste by avoiding packaging, not buying bottled water and instead I carry my own bottle, I'm while food vegan and focus on seasonal/local....and I'm against planned obsolescence and try to repair as much as possible. That way I've done all I can for all future generations.

Load of nonsense, 800 kg fresh sea cucumbers yields 80 kg dry sea cucumbers after processing , at current market value it’s 7000 usd , not 1 million usd , if you are a serious documentary maker then stop hyping

People can buy one pound of dry wild caught Canadian Red Sea cucumbers from Costco for about $70. People can buy wild caught whole cooked US Alaska Giant Red Sea cucumbers from Costco too. It is just greed that drive the Indian sea cucumber poachers. How dare people to try to link the Indian sea cucumber poachers with Chinese?

UPA commander's order of 6 April 1944 stated: "Fight them [the Poles] unmercifully. No one is to be spared, even in case of mixed marriages". Timothy Snyder describes the murders: "Ukrainian partisans burned homes, shot or forced back inside those who tried to flee, and used sickles and pitchforks to kill those they captured outside. In some cases, beheaded, crucified, dismembered, or disemboweled bodies were displayed, in order to encourage remaining Poles to flee".] A similar account has been presented by Niall Ferguson, who wrote: "Whole villages were wiped out, men beaten to death, women raped and mutilated, babies bayoneted.
