On Long Island those men are called “Baymen” Billy Joel mention them in the song “Downeaster Alexa”

Thanks for the comment, Billy. BJ makes some sublime music. I’ll have to listen for that. In the Chesapeake Bay, the term is “watermen.” Curiously, I wonder if that is a BJ oversight or truly the nomenclature on LI. I’ll have to look it up.
