Sea fishing - Skye - BIG Pollock!

The decision was made to leave my house on Saturday evening, get the three hour drive to Skye out of the way, sleep in my car (lined with cardboard) and wake up next to an infamous Pollock mark.
I woke up to a clear and windy day, got the bacon rolls and coffee sorted and was fishing just before high tide.
The fishing was superb with regular hook ups throughout the day. Almost all of the Pollock were in the 3.5 - 4.5lb range, with an absolute nuclear sub being caught half an hour before I left. It was a few ounces short of my PB but a phenomenal fight and a memorable experience.
Couldn't ask for more . . .
Planning the next trip already!

So good to watch, and 6:16 is the kind of noise all sea anglers want to be making. Nice work The Highland Fisherman, tight lines, mate.

@@hairyscone That's where I was a few years ago and although I got Spurdogs and Ling on the bait rod I only hit one big Pollock spinning. Will definitely give it a try again next time. Cheers

@@thehighlandfisherman3745 Aye all the scummers are leaving fishing 'rubbish' all over. I took a bag full away with me last time. Unfortunately it is all because it is too easy for anybody to find these places.....a few taps on a keyboard.....
@thehighlandfisherman3745
@thehighlandfisherman3745 4 года назад
@@eclipsearchery9387 I was actually back at this spot last month and apart from a bundle of line between rocks (that I couldn't reach) I didn't see any other rubbish about, which is encouraging. Totally agree that posting videos of marks has the potential to ruin them or at least increase fishing pressure. As such, I don't name any exact locations online and in this video I've actually edited out a certain prominent feature, just to make it slightly less obvious to those who don't know where it is.

What an amazing looking venue and what a fish the end on.
@droneboy1562
@droneboy1562 5 лет назад
@@thehighlandfisherman3745 do you mind me asking where the venue is. I'm planning a trip to the west coast the year in search of a spur and thorn back with my old man. Usally fish Arbroath and Aberdeen coast line in hunt of the double figure cod.

@thehighlandfisherman3745 5 лет назад
@@droneboy1562 Let's just say it's a very popular mark on Skye ;-) If it's spurdog/thornback you're after, Loch Etive might be worth a look.

I was up there 2 days ago and the wind was just horrendous! I couldn't stand where you were because the waves were often coming over me and I got drenched twice! On a calm day though it looks plentiful in fish!

Good to see you going for a drive n a car kip to fish; nice! However… That last photo of the ‘8 pounder’ made me ponder. It’s very short and not too chunky. I’m not saying I’m an expert ( far from it) but any decent pollock I’ve seen at 5 pounds or above are always lengthy, at over 55- 65cm in length. That one looks way short of that.
@thehighlandfisherman3745
@thehighlandfisherman3745 2 года назад
Cheers. This was filmed pre-spawn and they were all like rugby balls. I've never measured a Pollock before but might start doing so. In this case the perspective doesn't help, but she was a very chunky brute, weighed and returned to grow bigger. I'd like to know how much weight it lost after spawning.

It's a 7 hour drive for me even with a heavy foot but it's well worth it no where else fishes like Skye-get urself a fly rod Pollock fishing is amazing I was their 2 weeks ago👍
@thehighlandfisherman3745
@thehighlandfisherman3745 3 года назад
I got a Shakespeare Agility XPS 9-weight fly rod for the Pike and the Pollock. I've had a few Pike with it (up to 13lbs) but only the one half decent Pollock at 3lb. I'm not the best caster and find it quite difficult to get a decent distance (and depth), especially in the wind, and there's usually rocks etc behind me restricting the back cast. Just need to persevere!
@crazymtbrider
@crazymtbrider 3 года назад
@@thehighlandfisherman3745 I've a XPS same weight and I just got a scierra big fly but haven't had a go with it yet there some good marks at very top o Skye but alot of walking is needed sometimes I only started saltwater fly fishing 2 weeks ago - 10lb Pollock 2nd cast! I can cast the full 120yrd with airflo 40+ di7 line it's perfect when it's deep off the rocks, I'll be back up next month between Skye and Oban somewhere can't wait! Has ur XPS got the extra handle because it's needed on the biggy'z

@@crazymtbrider I'm definitely going to get a Di7 line. Was the 10lb'er on Skye? If so, fair play to you! Yeah - mine has the extra handle (it actually cam in handy when playing the Pike from the boat) haven't needed it for the Pollock - yet!

@@thehighlandfisherman3745 I'm not being specific but it's very top of Skye a fair old treck from road to be honest you can catch most places there is that much choice I'll holiday up their the rest of my days and still not see it all if I see anyone fly fishing I'll be sure to come see what flys your on👍tight lines

@@crazymtbrider It's all good - I wasn't asking for specific mark (I don't name the marks online) I was just curious if the 10lb'er was on Skye. My biggest on Skye is 8.5lb. I've been to a few of the marks at the very top and I'm pretty sure I know the one with the trek you're talking about. Totally agree about catching at most places - my PB was at a mark we'd never heard of and just tried after looking at Google maps/depth charts! Cheers. Tight lines.

E.g I took a pollock at my local mark in SE Scotland last a Thursday, at 63cm. It was barely 5 pounds. Taking in to account that it’s now early post-spawn ( late April) and it was under fed and thus, thin; still… it was a lot longer than that ‘8 pounder’ … you using digital scales before returning the fish?
@thehighlandfisherman3745
@thehighlandfisherman3745 2 года назад
Yes - digital scales, but please don't start talking about calibration/accuracy/manufacturer etc. I read the number and let them go, it's nothing too serious. Cheers

It is indeed! I think they taste fine but some people think they are quite bland. (We put 99% of them back anyway). Tell you what - you get yourself up here next February and in return I'll come down your way and you can put me onto some big Pike! 😂
