In the last days of my year long sea kayaking journey around Scotland, I paddled to the Isle of Staffa to visit Fingal’s Cave. I’ve been here many times before but even still, I misjudged the reef protecting the cave and thumped a sharp rock which holed my kayak. I repaired it that evening and all was well.

It’s one of my favourite places to kayak to, again and again.

One of my favourite places in the whole world, Staffa. A lone piper inside Fingal's was breathtakingly magical. Thanks for taking us there. I love how it appears you glide effortlessly through the waves... and the colour of the water is 👌

@@bigpondkayaks7731Thank you mate - that is very kind! I’m actually going to get my first taste of sea kayaking with Nick next summer hopefully, and I have a strong feeling I’m going to love it - might just take you up on that offer! 😁

Wow!! What a video. The music, the scenery, the colours and that pesky rock 🙈 Just about the best I've seen inside the cave. Makes me want to get back in my boat again.

Thank you Pete. I thought I’d try adding music. I’m pleased you liked this. I hope you do get back into your boat. Very best wishes.

That was one of the most amazing structures of columnar basalt I have ever seen. Now, if anyone asks what sort of rock put a hole in your kayak, you can tell them.

Ha ha, indeed. It certainly was a sharp edge of a column stump.

Beautiful video, thank you Nick. I thought the best part was the stunning view inside the cave as you expertly reversed out.

Thank you too. The film makes the cave seem quite narrow when in reality there’s good room for manoeuvring. 😊

Well done video, Nick! Aren’t sea kayakers privileged in their autonomy? No ferries or tourist boats to catch and paddle right where no one else gets to go. I am writing this not in triumph but in appreciation of our privilege to immerse ourselves in nature this way.

I use an Insta360 x3 camera. It filmed in 360 degrees and the editing app enables me to create the films you see. Great fun.

Shame about holing the kayak, but it would seem you repaired it without too much difficulty.

Thanks, it was an easy fix and the result will probably last for quite a while.
