The first in a series of excellent paddles in Mid Wales.Set off early Sat. morning, through banks of wintry, thick fog, only to emerge at Aberporth in summer! A quick bacon butty, at Aberporth Cafe, then launched through the surf, and out into a stiff-ish easterly wind. We made our way past Tresaith, and it's little waterfall, Penbryn, and onto Llangrannog. All of these are lovely little places, Llangrannog being perhaps the best, but it gets very crowded in summer, and it is much better to visit by kayak. The last time I did this trip was June '07, and my first proper paddle in Mid Wales.........and it remains one of my favourite paddles, check out the "Foggy Dolphins" video, done in the fog. So this is the first time. that I've seen some of this coastline properly, as it was either through fog, or in a shadowy sunset. North of Llangrannog is the headland of Ynys Lochtyn, and the swell, combined with some tidal stream provided us with challenging conditions, then as we turned into the next bay, calm was restored. But on landing here, we both got a shock, as the swell, made it's way around and caught first Matt out, then Me, as we exited on the beach, Matt said my boat had took a delivery from Jewsons for building sand!!! The relief of landing was great, as we both neede a Jimmy Riddle, and a leg stretch, not to mention comestibles. The journey back was good, the swell seemed to build up to a crescendo as we approached Llangrannog, so we moved offshore, and then it seemed to abate, the closer we got to Aberporth. All things considered, for March, this was an excellent day out, and the trips got better by the day as we went on. The music, was all my own work again, and for the first time I used my newly aquired acoustic bass.

Yeah, I love it down there, but, there is always a but, what's it like for employment there? I should imagine it's very difficult, I live between Manchester, and Liverpool, and it's absolutely dire for jobs. For the first time in my life, I am considering moving, or emigrating, I am on the bones of my arse with it all...........again. For me, it's ALWAYS the same, when the Tories get in, absolutely woeful, they just drain the lifeblood out of the North.

This is a great trip for beginners......on a calmer day than this obviously. Put in at Aberporth, or Cwmtydu, and there is great scenery, caves, and secluded beaches, all for yourselves. Obviously we were limited for landings in that swell, but on a calm day, it's all there for you. We saw a pod of Dolphins, just as we kitted up, but saw nothing whilst out there. As you probably know, your chances of encountering Dolphins here is very high. It's a wonderful stretch of coast, and usually quiet.

Thanks Desi..........if you thought that was funny, you would have pissed your pants, if you'd seen Matt land, and get beasted by a little wave, and then I went in and performed even worse, getting a quarter of a ton of sand in my boat in the process. Matt said Jewsons, had made a delivery in my boat, ha ha.Then there was an old geezer who came out to us, as a 'lifeguard' no towrope, radio, or lifejacket himself, so how he would have saved us, I don't know. But he meant well, and made us laugh.

Hi Alan, I rendered the videos on Vegas, and they were great, but for some reason RU-vid wouldn't upload them? So I changed the render again, and it was OK. Gremlins in the machine, I think? Some cracking trips here, each one seemed to get better, Matt's favourite was Dinas Head, but I think the last trip from New Quay was the best, He thinks it was better than the Stacks.

It was wild alright.............I put the camera away when it got tasty, for fear of taking a swim with it in my hand. The next one is Cemaes Head to Witches Cauldron, which is one of the best trips on the whole of the Welsh coast in my humble opinion. There was some wild water on that trip as well.

Thanks Itisitsits, It's a lovely stretch of coast, do it on a calm day in summer, and it is really magic, with many landing spots, for lunch, e.t.c. Go beyond Ynys Lochtyn, and there are some nice caves.

It must be fun, and obviously be safe as well. There was a bit of wild water out there, and getting too close at the wrong time, could well have been disastrous.

Yes indeed, think that may well have been summer, as for the multi tasking...........should've had the gas mask on there.

Paddled out from tresaith many many times - in both directions - lovely part of the world. My dad was born in Tresaith and still spends many weeks during the year down there. :-)

Hi Tim, it is indeed a lovely part of the World, we usually have a couple of nights in The Ship cele-berating the Wife's birthday every June. There are so many lovely places down there, I always say, start at New Quay and work your way right down to Tenby, and you cannot go wrong anywhere.
