Holes can have different sizes. You will see this by the time it takes to fix them. Some are fixed quick, some take a long time to fix.

Only getting 4 holes cause there are mechanics limiting it since you are on a sloop with only two people. More holes would happen on a brig or gal.

One thing that is important to remember is the fact that the normal barrels create smaller holes. And the bigger kegs create bigger holes, allowing water to flow in quicker. Also, when a small hole is created in the hull, and it is repaired, then destroyed again big a bigger force, it will become a bigger hole. So while the different kegs may all create 4 holes on a sloop, the damage still changes depending on the type of keg, from lower to higher tier holes.

in my opinion the bigger keg's point isnt really the damage they do but the blast is so big that it will likely kill or injure other pirates on the ship enough so that they just sink

For optimal destruction put the barrels right at the bottom of the stairs leading to the map table/quest table.

I mean, as a Kamikaze Galleons, I always tell my crews to find Gunpowder that enough to be held by 4 people, then we jumped into enemy ship in sight. We’re not good at shooting but we sure damn good about the Kamikaze and Damage control.

best placement is on the stairs - gets all wheel and capstan pegs, mast and 4-6 holes

I was questing in the Devil's Roar and placed my sloop a bit too close to the shoreline. When I gloriously returned with a stronghold keg and placed it on the shore for harpooning and moving to another island (I was almost done with what I had to do in this specific island), geysers started acting up. The barrel exploded. So did I. My ship took damage and when I got back from the Ferry (I play solo and I know it is not the best thing to do in the Devil's Roar) I was barely able to bail and repair to avoid sinking. I later got another stronghold barrel, placed it in the crow's nest and kept going. About 10 minutes after log out, I remembered I forgot to sell the damn thing. In short, I found two Stronghold barrels in the Devil's Roar and sold neither.

Optimal destruction is shen its a chain reaction - so that each of the barrel explosion produce 4 independent holes.

I’m pretty sure the reasoning behind this is because usually you will have 2 people max on a sloop so it needs to be balanced. However, certain holes take more to patch

Yea it all will put 4 holes in ships. The difference is the size of the holes and explosion radius. On a sloop, an Athena and stronghold with kill all regardless of where you put the barrel. Strongholds and Athena barrels both give Large sized holes while regular give medium size holes

Besides from the different size holes, it makes sense on a development front to keep the sloop to around 4 holes. Since you can only have up to two players and lots of players may be solo slooping, it would be pretty unfair for them to get more than 4. You would most likely sink every time. I mean if you die in the explosion, loading times permitted, you'll barely make it back in time. (And on Xbox one if you die on a sloop you'll be lucky to load fast enough to save your ship).

Hahaha awesome info man. Just started playing this game again yesterday after a very long break. I allianced with another sloop, and we did the fort of fortune. As we were looting, a gally came along and tried to reap our rewards, so I took the two super kegs and suicide bombed them so my new lads could get away. It was a spectacle haha. Best part is, i managed to respawn in the water by the island, so I just hopped on their ship for an hour or so. It reminded me how much I love this game.

I see the whole argument of bigger holes but they have greater area of effect

At least now as a newer play i know that it just needs to explode next to the enemy ship, that they just do 4 holes but in varying tiers and that i theoretically have enough time if im not on the ship

Don't forget that there are tiers to the holes, tier one, two and three, the higher the tier the more water flow into the ship

These guys should also test Explosives with Brig, and Galleon, because the Limit to number of Holes poked in the the ship could be due to the Size of the Ship.

On the topic of kegs, I once stronghold kegged a solo sloop killed the guy and he SOME HOW DIDNT SINK. I was terrified and ran.

I was looking for what tier the holes are for different kegs. Could kinda see in the video, but not all. I don't sail brig that often, even less galleon, so I only get half the info I need for a sloop. Guess I'll have to do some investigating myself.

The mechanic should work that if the blast sphere hits any part of the ship there will be a hole, holes get bigger if they are hit multiple times and higher ship size allows for more damage.

Can you do the same kind of tests on galeon and brig?

Once filled a sloop with kegs along the edge of the deck pinned my sloop between a dock and a gallon and detonated killed all the chickens on the gallons captains corters.

Will two kegs near the map be enough to sink the sloop? i just exploded two kegs in the area below the helm of an enemy sloop but i died and they sunk my ship, i respawned far from where the battle happened so i do not know if they sunk. i am beyond dying to know and does anyone know if they sunk or not? they both died in the explosion and they were probably on xbox if that helps.

Weird, I did an ancient black powder one against a sloop while in the water next to it and it sank pretty much immediately and killed both crew members. Maybe they had kegs on board as well so it sank faster.

Man an Athena’s keg doesn’t do more than 4 holes on a sloop??, was doin some DR vaults earlier and only one giant meteor caused 4 large holes, and what felt like a million small ones (it wasn’t a million tho)

I once sniped a crows nest of several Athena and stronghold kegs. The sloop sank within seconds. If u gonna betray an alliance after FoF better get rid of your kegs guys😂😉

Only for holes yes, but usually when a keg explode in a sloop, the players in the sloop die with the explosion. So the sloop have time to sunk by the time they come back

I was cruising in the devil's roar when suddenly a volcano erupted and sent a bomb straight into the crow's nest where 2 athena keg were. I don't know how but I survived the explosion and I managed to save the ship and my loot for the day be safe on the seas ✌️

It did the same damage but if you were in the ship, you are dead and by the time you are back the ship is gone

they all did 4 damage but theres 3 tiers 1 to 3 lowest means it takes quick to fix and higher longer

Lol, hole size be damned. I've used dozens of kegs on ships and found incredibly inconsistent results. On one occasion I used a stronghold keg in a brig and only scored 2. holes.

the difference is in the holes class. Tghe amount is not as important as hole size. And i guess the more damase is sustained - the wider each hole of the same amount.

ancient kegs will do more dmg if they where lower deck that why it not a good idea to play a keg biside mast when trying to blow up someone .

you didnt even compare the tier of the holes... holes in ships have three tiers, you shoudl repeat the experiment but have a look at the size of the holes, as they determine how much water will come in and how long it takes to repair

Normal=normal boom Stronghold=ship gets big destructive boom Athena=Very big boom but less ship damage

Even if it only does 4 holes at most, the crew of the sloop will in many of these scenarios die. So they won't be able to repair or remove any water.
