Well it's edible at least the orange stuff is after doing further research I found it's actually a popular kind of Sushi known as Uni and the orange stuff happens to the Sea Urchins Sperm. 😂
Well if you are starving to death and cant catch a moving animal u eat crustaceans and such, thats most likely how we know u can eat it raw without dying
I grew up in a Caribbean island and fished with my grandfather quite a bit and sea urchins was part of the catch . Didn't eat it raw but fried it up with onions and little seasoning, with bread or fried dumplings or steamed provisions such as bananas , yams , or rice . So delicious ❤ my grandfather was a quiet man, lived of the land and he was awesome and a good cook , Good ole days . I miss him so much. ♥️♥️♥️♥️
In New Zealand its pretty common to soak them in fresh water before eating. Makes them sweet lol. I didn't know until recently that they're enjoyed in so many other parts of the world.

Diving for them is the best way, the thick creamy ones inside the shell is the best, not small inside like what he eats and so don't pick small ones, pick big ones and only eat the roe.
There's a difference between female and male sea urchins, the male are always dark black color while the females can be orange or purple like in this video, they are now protected here in Sardinia-Italy but back in the day we used to make spaghetti pasta with the eggs of the females. If you get them here's the recipe In a pan add some olive oil, garlic (not chopped up but depends if you like it or not) hot peppers and after 10 mins turn off the heat, add the cooked pasta in the oil, after that the eggs can be added and it's one of the most unique pasta dishes i have ever tasted😌 Ratio is 50 urchins for 4 persons (500 grams of spaghetti)
Sea urchins are kinda like a pests here in the Philippines during it’s season. 10- 15 years ago only the locals only ate them now it’s the demand is increasing. It’s good to hear that it’s not only in the tropics people eat them.
He got them at the wrong time of year. These urchins have already mated for the year so theres no uni inside. Some people find uni delicious and im too afraid to eat it but i think they'd agree this is awful
Ooni is so mid lol we have these same urchins everywhere in Mauritius and I’m pretty sure the government advocates for people to hunt them if they can, but surprise surprise no one wants to eat that shit lol I feel like it’s a case of “Asian delicashite” yet again 😂

the purple sea urchins are invasive and should be eaten more, they had a massive boost in population due to their main predator going extinct/endangered (i am not sure) and theyve caused an insane depletion in kelp

This is a delicacy in the Maori culture in New Zealand and though we don't have purple coloured one's the insides are the same. We also eat the entire inside of it and the easiest way to open it is to stab it on the bottom flat end and cut down like slicing the first piece of cake ❤ enjoy

If i ever get the chance to try harvesting sea urchins im not going to bother trying to make sushi, ill be looking up videos where folks in asia cook using the outside as a cooking bowl with the meat/eggs still attached and use that as reference. I imagine that you get more urchin taste/flavor that way.

Sea urchins are animals. They are echinoderms and are related to sea stars. They crawl around on the sea floor with small tube feet and prey on kelp and other seaweeds.
Those are the smallest kina I've ever seen! Use 2 spoons pointed outwards and stab the kina at the middle top to break in half, then scoop out the yellow part in a clean swipe, in NZ those are a delicacy for some. You can buy in containers about 10 or so slivers for 40bux. Also those ones you have are small azf!
How do you get a fishing license? I live in southern california (LA), and I'm 19 y.o. (going on 20 next month). I've always been interested in gathering clams or shellfish, but I don't know how to go about doing it. I want to make sure that everything I do is legal and oblige with the environmental requirements.
It's not the season for it. Go back during late fall when they've developed the uni more. You'll get huge pieces and you'll make 10 times more sushi with it
Absolutely do not forget your license. Game wardens are like police but more serious. Mad respect for their conservation efforts. They will fine the fuck out of you, and there's no defense because you're harming our environment. I'm in Texas maybe it's different elsewhere.
the sea urchins near my coasts aren’t that easy to manipulate 😭. The ones here look like the stinging glow urchins from Monster University. All of them have long and very sharp needles 🪡, some of them are even red and white and the spikes are black which basically makes them look like they glowing💀. The ones a couple of hundred of meters from the coast are big and fat with short spikes. Too bad currents make it difficult to get there.
