Man O' War was another great. Only time he didn't win was when he basically got boxed in and the jockey refused to bang his way through. Won every other race in blowout fashion. Having said that, I'm going to have to doubled check my stats. Going off stories my grandpa told me as a young kid.

@@nataliestclair6176 By far. Secretariat was the greatest horse of all time. Period. That being said, due to the ups and downs of his story, plus his under dog nature, Seabiscuit is the far better movie in my opinion.

I've watched this movie close to 50 times. Seabiscuit is an American hero. There are several documentarys about Seabiscuit on youtube and of course Lara Hillenbrand's book about seabiscuit that brought all this about in the first place. BTW the actor playing George Wolff isn"t a typical actor, he is Gary Stevens, hall of fame race jockey and winner of 3 Kentucky Derbys, the last of which was on Silver Charm who just celebrated his 29th birthday at Old Friends Farm in Georgetown Kentucky. And the jockey playing Charlie Kurtsinger, who was War Admirals jockey, was played by Chris McCarron who also designed all the racing scenes for the movie, and also happened to be a hall of fame race jockey to win two Kentucky Derbys.

In case anyone is interested, War Admiral was Seabiscuit's uncle. War Admiral's father (or sire) was Man O' War. Man O' War also fathered Hard Tack and one of Hard Tack's offspring was Seabiscuit. Small world, big heart. PS - Please watch Secretariat. Big Red (Secretariat's nickname) was undoubtedly the best three year old Triple Crown winner in American history.
@slimbrady6691
@slimbrady6691 Год назад
Interestingly enough, Secretariat was also a distant relative of Man O' War, War Admiral, Seabiscuit, etc. Secretariat's sire was Bold Ruler. Bold Ruler's dam was Miss Disco. Miss Disco's sire was Discovery. Discovery's sire was Display. Display's sire was Fair Play, who was also Man O' War's sire.

Horses have their psychologies. I don't know if Cassie is going to watch "Secretariat," but Secretariat had an interesting psychological story. In his very first race, right out of the gate he was cut off by another horse doing an illegal maneuver and collided hard with another horse, almost falling. For the rest of his career, he was afraid to come out of the gate fast and hated running in crowds, which made it all the more fascinating that he became what most people consider the greatest racehorse ever. In all three of his most legendary races -- the 1973 Belmont, 1973 Preakness, and 1973 Kentucky Derby, collectively the "Triple Crown" -- he came out of the gate cautiously in last place, well behind the pack, and passed everybody by running to the outside of the pack which is the longest distance around the track, yet still holds the record for fastest time in all three races even to this day, fifty years later. (You can watch TV broadcasts of all three races on RU-vid). It's interesting to wonder if he might have run those races even faster without that phobia, or if that phobia was actually part of what made him so great.
@Cadinho93
@Cadinho93 Год назад
Fun Fact: The companions Seabiscuit is given to calm him down were actually used in real life. The stray dog was named Pocatell. The female horse, Pumpkin, would accompany him to all his races through out his racing career. Also, since you reacted to "Seabiscuit" you now have to react to "Secretariat" (2010), it's a awesome movie.

💫I reckon Cassie would enjoy "Tucker: The Man and His Dream" (1988) too. Also starring Jeff Bridges playing a kind of similar character, also an inspirational "little guy" story based on true history, also a very well made movie that's kind of gotten lost in the shuffle. By the way, a horse movie poll really ought to include "National Velvet" (1944), famously one of the granddaddies of this sub-genre and the movie that made young Elizabeth Taylor a star. This movie is based on a book written by Laura Hillenbrand. As she was researching for this book she kept coming across stories about a man, Louis Zamperini, that could only lose in a race to Seabiscuit. That man actually had an incredible story of his own, so she eventually wrote a 2nd book about him called Unbroken. They made a movie based on that book a few years ago too, definitely worth checking out.

No apologies needed! This film makes me cry every time. I think it's a beautifully told story, and I love how the three stories (Charles, Tom and "Red"/Johnny) all come together as one overall story. I think that they all changed -- Charles found renewed life and hope in his wonderful new wife and in Seabiscuit as a venture, Tom became less of a recluse and part of the team (while still being his awesome self), and Red found family again in a different place and support when he needed it. And Seabiscuit found a home and people who cared about him beyond whether or not he could race. Great story, plus pretty pretty horses. What's not to love about this film? 😄😊🏇

Hi Cassie, this was a beautiful, moving reaction. A few comments: 1) 4:25: "Is that The Dude?".....Indeed it is.....Jeff Bridges has a brother (Beau) and father (Lloyd) who are also actors. Jeff is in another movie with a car angle (Tucker: The Man and His Dream). Very good movie. 2) 8:17: "This is the Great Depression?"......Yes, Seabiscuit was an inspiration to millions of people during this very difficult time. 3) 18:58: "Do you ever feel sorry for the horses watching them run?" Race horses are born and bred to run. Millions of dollars are spent on these elite horses. They are carefully looked after. 4) The movie "Secretariat" is a must watch. He is the greatest thoroughbred who ever lived. His performance at the 1973 Belmont Stakes was so dominating it defies belief. His time still stands as the fastest ever at Belmont.

If you visit the Santa Anita racetrack, Seabiscuit's old stomping grounds in Southern California, Seabiscuit's statue is there ready to greet you. You can even kind of see it in the movie during the scenes where they showed shots of Santa Anita, but the camera angles and edits were done in such a way that you won't really notice that it's there unless you know where to look, because, obviously, the statue's not supposed to be there yet during that time period. Also, back when I went in there to visit (which was well over 10 years ago now) if you go inside and cross the racetrack all the way in, there's a little "petting zoo" sort of setup where they have one of the actual "actor horses" portraying Seabiscuit in the movie, and he was even wearing Seabiscuit's colors, and everything! I think they used, like, six or seven different horses to portray him while making the movie? But anyway, he's tiny! You can really see the difference in size between him, i.e., the "Seabiscuit stunt-double", and all of the other various thoroughbreds that were running during that day's race.

June 9th, 2023 makes the 50th anniversary of Secretariat's phenomenal Belmont Stakes victory (I'm getting choked up right now). He was GOD's OWN HORSE - at around 1:25 into the race, announcer Chic Anderson declares "...he is MOVING like a treMENDous MACHINE!" - gets me every time. I remember watching it on Live TV. If you've never seen that classic sports film footage announced by Chic Anderson, you ain't seen nothing. He estimated the lead was 25 lengths, when in reality he was 31 lengths ahead of the next horse! When 'Big Red' died, his autopsy revealed his heart was indeed TWO AND A HALF TIMES LARGER than the average horse. Those Triple Crown record times still hold up, for that horse who was indeed 'all heart'.

Just to answer a bit of some of your questions, we bought into some horses since i grew up within two miles of Churchill Downs, so Ive always loved horses and horse racing. The business is basically buying lottery tickets that breathe. The statistics are about 1 in 3 horses pay for themselves (training, feeding, vet) and 1 in 6 make money. BUT, if you ever get the big winner that hits big, then breeds for 10-20 years, the payoff is a lottery jackpot. And even when we are losing, much like Tom Smith said, they're fun to look at, visit, pet. The horse is 65% of the win, the trainer is another 25%, and the wrong jockey can make a sure thing a loser. But the best jockeys tend to get the best horses, because as owners, we want the best chance all around. But it is a very expensive hobby, but we love it, and I loved seeing your reaction to Seabiscuit. Hopefully you will watch Secretariat, we were extras in a scene for that one, but this is still my favorite.

I got to be an extra in this movie, when they shot race scenes at the Santa Anita Racetrack near Pasadena. Background extras were required to be dressed in suits and were given cheap plastic old-timey hats to complete the look. A fourth of the stadium was filled with mannequins and inflatable spectators, and then the background extras were in the rows in front of them, which featured extras all the way in the front. It was fun to see what went into shooting the races, like seeing Tobey Maguire on a mechanical half-horse (used for close-ups, all it was was the saddle for sitting on and the neck and head of the horse constantly bobbing up and down, you can tell which shots use this because the horse's head bobs way too slow LOL).

Lots of good comments here. I'll add that David McCullough - the narrator - is one of my all time favorite voices. He also did Ken Burns' Civil War on PBS. I don't know what it is about the way he says things. Perhaps it's the way his dialogue is written as well. I could listen to him talk for a long, long time.

This is one of those movies that if I am flipping through the channels and come across it, I have to finish it. Seabiscuit the movie to me is really more about the Great Depression and America’s recovery from it, the horse’s story is used as a metaphor for this. Secretariat the movie is more specifically about the horse and the owner’s journey to become the greatest horse in racing history, at least since the start of the 20th century. It’s a great movie too.

Great film about a great horse, the immortal Seabiscuit. Now watch the film about the greatest horse who ever lived, Secretariat, and the woman who made him champ. And then watch maybe the best horse movie ever made, The Black Stallion, with the great Mickey Rooney, teaching his young jockey to ride like the peerless Georgie Wolf.

Greetings Cassie First of all, it is natural to be scared of horses because they are so big and powerful; however, horses are also the friendliest, good natured, and intuitive animals. This is why they are used as therapy animals for children with Down Syndrome. autism, or traumas. Unless they sense, you will be trying to hurt them, they will not hurt you and let you stroke and nuzzle them. Usually so sugar cubes or carrots are nice ice breakers. Also, if they are untamed, they can be dangerous, but most stable horses are very comfortable around people. FYI! Yes, there are 4 Bridges you have to know and remember: Llyod Bridges (the father), Beau Bridges (the eldest son), Jeff Bridges (the third child and 2nd son == The Dude), and Jordan Bridges (the grandson, Beau's son, 3rd generation Bridges). All were / are in the acting business. You might remember Beau as Matt Cushman (the father of Frank "Cush" Cushman played by Jerry O'Connell). Beau has over 85 film and 82 tv credits since beginning acting in 1948 at the young age of 6. You can see most of the Bridges family in the 1986 film "The Thanksgiving Promise". Jordan Bridges beat his father by beginning acting at the age of 5. He is best known for the films "Drive Me Crazy" (1999), "Frequency" (2000), and "Mona Lisa Smile" {2003) He can also be remembered for playing Frankie Rizzoli, the brother of Jane Rizzoli, in the tv series "Rizzoli & Isles". Jane Rizzoli was played by Angie Harmon. Charles Howard (Jeff Bridges) was a bicycle shop owner. From the clip, you can see him becoming the biggest auto dealer in California and the richest man in the Bay Area. In horse racing, it is a combination of horse and jockey at about a 60 / 40 to 70 /30 ratio, depending on horse and rider. For the owners, it is about being able to congratulate with other prized horse owners, the money, and the prestige of owning a race winning horse. Jockeys, for the most part, have to be under 5'2" and under 110 Lbs. There are some exceptions. This is so they are not 'too heavy' load on the horse while racing. If someone wants to be a jockey, s/he must meet the basic requirement. The most someone taller can do is lose weight. The "announcer guy" was William H Macy. You might remember him from such loved films as "Fargo", "WarGames", "The Client", "Mr. Holland's Opus", "Ghosts of Mississippi", "Air Force One", "Pleasantville", "Jurassic Park III", "Room", and "Wild Hogs". Yes, this is a heart-warming and inspirational horse movie. Yet, I STILL prefer "Hidalgo" over this one. It has Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn - LORT) in and even longer and 'against-the-odds" race. Viggo is ULTRA talented and underappreciated actor.

Jeff Bridges is wonderful and perfect in The Fisher King alongside Robin Williams. Since you loved Return to Me…you will love The Fisher King. It does have some tragedy, but it’s so warm. Jeff Bridges is a part of Hollywood royalty. His Dad is Lloyd Bridges, who you would have seen in Airplane. The guy who picked the wrong week to give up everything like glue sniffing. 😂

Horses really do like to run... we had a male pony, one day the farmer next door took in a female horse that would come up to the fence and they'd bump noses, first time our pony saw her he literally ran up and down the fence for almost 4-5 days straight hour after hour after hour even at night. He ran so long that he was literally dripping in sweat and looked like had been swimming and you could smell him from the house lol... she was an ugly mare, but our pony thought she was the bee's knee's, and he ran to impress. Outside of that he would also run for 5-10 minutes every day up and down the paddock in spurts for most of his life... kinda like how cats have daily running spaz attacks.

@24:18 There was a famous 6ft 10 inch tall basketball player called Paul de'UdderOne who was forced to retire due to injury. While he spent the next 18 months recovering, he took some "herbs" and managed to shrink down to 5ft 3 inches and went on to become one of the most successful flat race jockeys of all-time.

You want to be really light weight to be a jockey and jockeys are usually short. The reason he throws up before a race is to be lighter for the horse.

This film is based on a WONDERFUL book by Laura Hillenbrand, and in it she describes how Seabiscuit loved to race, once he was being trained correctly. I had no interest in race horses when I stumbled across the book but I tore through it, it's fascinating.

I HIGHLY recommend reading the book "Seabiscuit" by Laura Hillenbrand. Amazing story ( the same author wrote "Unbroken"). You'll really learn just how rough Red's life was....as well as the life of most jockies at the time. The way the War Admiral / Seabiscuit race was described is fantastic. War Admiral was basically psyched out with just a look from Seabiscuit. You can actually see the moment it happened if you watch the original film footage. Great reaction as usual !!

This is the 50th anniversary of Secretariat's Kentucky Derby win. It's too bad that one didn't win the poll. I don't know how much Disney messed with the real story but I did like the movie. Of course I grew up with a crush on Diane Lane too. Anyway I've lived my whole life in Louisville, KY which is where the Kentucky Derby is run and you should really come check it out. It's the oldest continuous sporting event in the USA and we start off the celebrations with a blast, literally, 2 weeks earlier with Thunder Over Louisville, the nation's largest fireworks display. We have all kinds of festival events and parties packed with celebrity guests from sports, politics, TV, movies, and music. It's a load of fun and next year is the 150th running so the crowds should be off the charts!
