SEAGATE 8TB External Hard Drive Speed Test and Review! Best value for backup storage in 2023!

The Seagate One Touch hard drive is a great value for both quality and speed in the external hard drive market!
I cover the read/write speed of this hard drive, and will compare it with another hard drive, the LaCie Porsche Design 1TB drive. This drive is available at retailers such as Costco and Amazon (although I personally would recommend purchasing from Costco for the best service in case of any early issues). In this video I will cover my 1 month of experiences with this.
I will also walk though how to setup the Seagate Toolkit Encryption software so your data is protected against unwanted use.
There are also a few accessories that are worth noting that come with this drive, including it's data cable, dc power adapter, and international power duckheads.

A very comprehensive review. Thanks. To save time I`d like an external hard drive connected to my computer to automatically send the same data to a second external hard drive through the first`s usb hub., giving a second back-up as I work throughout the day. Can the One Touch drive do this? (presumably through the Toolkit software?)
@Filmlove
@Filmlove 7 месяцев назад
Glad that you could watch! Yes the Seagate’s USB-A and USB-C ports do support data, so you can daisy-chain if you’d like another hard drive connected for another backup. As far as automatic backups go, I use MacOS, in which Time Machine is the built-in ultility for automatically backing up to an external drive

Do you advise on reformatting the drive to APFS from the stock format that it comes with?
@Filmlove

ExFAT runs pretty smooth on my Mac, I had no reason to reformat

Great video! I am looking for a solution to archive my finished RU-vid video workflow... which I assume is what you are also using it for (I use the T7 for editing workflow). Did you need to reformat for mac? I have the 2019 macbook pro with the same 4 USB-C ports (why!). How is it going for you now?
@Filmlove
@Filmlove 8 месяцев назад
Hi, thanks! Thankfully I did not need to reformat to start writing to the drive with MacOS, however I did need to change security settings in Recovery Mode to install the Seagate encryption software (you probably saw towards the end of video). So far both the drive and M2 MacBook Pro are working smoothly in concert! If you’re considering upgrading that 2019 Mac, the M-series will make your workflow so much more enjoyable

Great video! How did you get your drive to transfer so fast? I have the same one and for some reason it says the the speed of transferring in around 25mb/s! do you happen to know what might be the reason? Is it something I need to use my warranty for? could it be because of my computer for some reason? Thank you!!
@Filmlove
@Filmlove Месяц назад
Hi, thanks for connecting! The only thing that I can think to cause a slow transfer will be if you are transferring while using the drive for another task (maybe background backup activity, opening a file?). Also my current setup is using the USB-C port on the computer with the USB-A converter

@@Filmlove thank you for your answer:) I was only using it for a normal backup, nothing else in the background.. I will test it also with a usb-c port to see if that resolves the situation 🙏

Thanks for the effort, I have a little question, Does it make a difference using the Sandisk ssd connected to the hub itself than connecting to the Macbook? I mean does it help with the speed of backup?
@Filmlove
@Filmlove 8 месяцев назад
Good question, this one will require some research (or do my own use-case testing on this unit when I get an opportunity) because I’m not sure if the data still needs to go thru the Mac before it writes to the Seagate hub. If so, it may be better to connect the Sandisk directly to the Mac if you can, since the read speed of the Sandisk will be faster anyway than what the Seagate can write

does this encryption use up a lot more space and affect performance?
@Filmlove
@Filmlove 4 месяца назад
Hi, I haven’t found that speed has changed since using encryption and the capacity of the drive is the same
@marsh84722
@marsh84722 4 месяца назад
@@Filmlove I got one and was able to verify that space might get taken up a little bit more with encryption depending on what's being encrypted. One folder of mine that had a lot of tiny files in it which is normally 173GB ended up being 192GB once it was encrypted. But another folder with lots of large files in it is 108GB unencrypted and only maybe 170mb larger when it's encrypted but about 108GB also.
@Filmlove
@Filmlove 4 месяца назад
Good to know, thanks for verifying! I’ve only been using this drive encrypted and with larger video files, so it’s good to see the impact of a high volume of small files

You dont think there are many devices that support USB A? What? Most devices use usb A. And You can get an adapter for those few devices that do not have usb A. Changing to usb c would decrease out of box compatibility and without any added performance.

@@konsul2006 interesting, it shouldn’t be that slow, as long as the USB port supports the bandwidth. I’m curious if you can swap the unit if it’s a bad drive.

I have discovered that the software installed by Western Digital runs a service called "WDDriveService" and it makes the One Touch Hub run super slow! When I stop or disable that service I get the full speed of the Seagate drive! (This is on Windows 11)

So you used USB3.0 cables because you can't find type-c to type-c? Is it even work with macbook via type-c cable?
@Filmlove
@Filmlove 4 месяца назад
The Seagate hub comes with USB-B to USB-A cable. Which seems to be fine though because the read/write speeds of 130Mb/s is well within what USB 3.0 supports. And yes with a usb-a adapter it will work with Mac
