Used to have the same seagull visiting my window, it would sit down on sunny days and bask. Absolutely love the creatures and it makes me so sad when people badmouth them. They are just surviving in the world like we are. ❤

Thanks for letting us know what they eat. There's one who has been visiting me for 2yrs on end.... Only on very windy days he'll skip a meal but i am sure he's a great hunter. Sometimes he's gone for a week. Named him Eddy, short for Edward.. He is so respectful, never takes a crap on the balcony where he eats... sometimes takes off just to take a crap and then returns....

I wish I could feed them too but I dream of a world where we can coexist with them without hate and persecution. I believe the only way that can happen is if we change our behaviour - 1.Stop feeding them which results in human/food association 2. stop leaving out waste and crap for them to eat 3. stop depleting marine life etc. But yeah I get it… when you’re attached to a gull it’s very hard… some will keep returning to you. I’m not against feeding gulls in a rescue situation. 💙

@@AnimalEducate I would find a slightly sheltered or blocked spot that forced the seagulls to land nearby, then I would toss a scrap to those that walked up to me. The gulls would start to fight and squabble and I would tell them no and walk away. Eventually, the no became enough to stall the chaos, especially when they realised a scrap was coming there way if they waited. When I was finished feeding them, I would exaggerate dusting my hands, show the empty palms and say "All done". By the end, the gulls all line up in a row and if other gull approached - they'd be warned off or would land a distance away and waddle to the queue. The gulls would all tuck their necks in and looked kind of fluffy for it, and they would whistle at me. When I said "All done" some would immediately leave, whilst some waddled around me whistling and long calling. When they led their juveniles to me, I realised that the body language and sounds the juveniles made were the same as what the adult gulls had began to adopt towards me. Making me think that the gulls had regressed to juvenile behaviours because of my feeding regime.

I usually don't endorse feeding seagulls but once on a cold winter day I saw a juvenile seagull so I threw some bread to it. I could spot a few adults around but the interesting things is as competitive as they are, the adults even though realized there was food on display, they just let the juvenile take it. It's very fascinating to learn the fact that they would let the young have the food

A superb video which really got the right objective message across.. I have noted that where a species is "hated" it's usually due to feeding by the public who then turn on the bird .Press love it and before long have built a case against a bird when really humans have behaved badly . Pigeons , Canada Geese , Crows and in some areas Starlings are loathed .. Selective liking based on scale of 'cuteness' is used .Before long the various species are condemned . A crazy mind set All birds have something very special to offer .Mainly they are birds :) cute is a word I never use .Their cry is wonderful :) 👍

A large seagull walked into my garden 2 years ago I realised there was something wrong because it would have flown away as I approached it had a broken wing I put it in my summer house with water and dog food plus sardines next morning it had eaten the lot I searched for the nearest bird sanctuary which fortunately wasn’t too far away at Whitby on the east coast of Yorkshire , thank you for speaking out this vilification is going on with many species of birds and animals we need to become more mindful of our own behaviour and be very wary of the media

Seagulls are very intelligent , I recently stumbled across an injured chick behind my work place , could barely walk i was expecting the parents to dive bomb me when i approached it but they never did so i knew it had been abandoned anyways long story short it now comes and sits with me when it eats it's dinner because it knows the other birds wont come and bully the food off of it when i'm there it also knows when i bring it out water , It enjoyed giving itself a bath yesterday , Watching it looking at his feet while it was splashing in the water was quite funny to watch , It's still in the grey and black plumage but it's healthy enough now to get onto a roof for the night to keep it safe from cats ,I called it Sammy because i have no idea what sex it is , But i know it doesn't like red cabbage or lettuce and it always talks to me in the quiet little whistle they have which is actually quite cute compared to the angry scouser squawk the adults have .

I think we have most of the population of Herring Gulls down here in Cornwall. Here in Newlyn I actually saw a gull last year swallow a live rat whole. I could not believe what I was seeing. I also had one a couple of years ago who would tap it's beak on my bedroom window at about 6 in the morning. Can't really complain because at least I don't live in St Ives where they have the Super-gulls who hunt in packs and swoop down and steal the ice cream from out of your cone.

I've lived along the coast my whole life, and the only negative experience I've ever had with any gull was getting pooped on by one, lol. Living in a tourist area now, most of the restaurants near the beaches warn you when you take food to go about how bold the gulls are, and loads of tourists don't take them seriously; leads to a lot of stolen food, haha. A group of gulls nests on the roof of my work building, and because all gulls are protected under the Migratory Bird Act in the US, they've been here for years. I've seen a few different groups of babies growing up there, and while the parents are loud if you catch sight of the chicks, they're generally more watchful than aggressive. Someone went up there to hose the roof down this summer, and the adults nearly knocked him off! They swooped at anyone the next few days, but settled down after a quiet weekend with no people, and now we're back to our regular relationship. Really incredible birds, and with so much language; they're not a nuisance if you don't give them reason to be.

Thank you for this. I have a phobia of seagulls and it’s pretty bad. I get so scared whenever I’m near them, and even thinking about them makes me feel stressed. I avoid going to the beach because of gulls, and it doesn’t help that I live by the coast. The birds honestly make me feel really stessed and anxious and I don’t know what to do. This video really helps because I’m trying to learn to appreciate the birds and educate myself about them. I know how much you appreciate gulls, and I wish I could, but there’s just something about them. I’ve been a victim to a seagull attack before and I think that’s what triggered my fear. If you have any further advice that would be really appreciated!!

Thanks so much for your comment! Animal phobias are very common so you’re not alone. I had a horrendous animal phobia when I was young… but with perseverance I managed to overcome it. I learnt as much as I could about the species and slowly desensitised myself by looking at photos etc. I’m not fully over it but I’ve come a long way. Yes no doubt the attack triggered the fear! Try and be around them when you can and build up positive experiences with them. Just make sure you have no food around them as this will initiate a frenzy which may put you in harms way. You could try photographing them 😀 make a photo diary of your phobia recovery. Hope that helps 💙

I always find these gulls at my work since were right next to the sea and cannot help but just attack them to avoid them stealing our food often willing to go as far as hurting customers to get what they want. Dw, I will not do this but satisfying to imagine lol. This is coming from a mind of an annoyed worker

Some species of gulls have always been inland birds. There are entire populations of Ring-billed and California Gulls that live their entire lives without ever seeing salt water. Ring-billed Gulls never breed at the coast and California Gulls only do so in a small part of Central California. Some populations only migrate to the coast during winter. Also, the picture of the Glaucous Gull shown here was actually a Glaucous-winged Gull.

Gulls are so under rated. People say their nasty and a nuisance, even though they're actually forced to live in cities and dumpsters because of global warming and pollution. Also, you CAN feed gulls. What you could do is fill up a kiddie pool and get some (Alive so they don't forget their hunting habits!) fish. Then you can attracts gulls using food such as grapes, and attract them there. I understand if you hate them cause they poop on you, but they aren't as smart as humans and you COULD try training one to poop in a certain place. There's also this youtuber that somehow attracts gulls and they come to his yard daily for years(Different gulls btw)I can also send a link to their channel!

@AnimalEducate
@AnimalEducate 3 года назад
Hello, I understand! I used to feed them before I understood the damage. To put it simply, the more we feed them the more they will return ... you are offering them a food source so they will associate humans with food. Yes you're correct, we need to discourage swooping behaviour, and lessen their willingness to approach humans. We don't want them to over populate! consider how may news stories you have read about gull behaviour - all negative right? People don't tolerate them so are less able to accept the noise, mess, swooping, and damage etc so are more likely to enter conflict with them instead of viewing them as a wild animal trying to survive. It just spirals out of control. Yes there are some circumstances I believe its ok to feed them. If you are nursing a gull back to health, or an abandoned baby gull. X

You forgot New Zealand which has three resident species of gulls. More than two million black-backed gulls live around New Zealand's coasts, rivers and near-shore islands. Also the black billed gull This gull is found only in New Zealand and is endangered.

I have been feeding seagulls for a few months because they eat garbage. They don't ever get close to me. It is probably because they are extremely hungry, so they need to survive. I am not sure i understand your point

I say continue doing what you love, especially if you’re helping to feed a hungry mouth. I also feed them. I love seeing them every morning knock at my window, or wait outside for me. I believe it is our duty to help out our wildlife, especially during the winter months when they struggle to find food. What kind of people are we if we can’t have compassion for these amazing creatures. Their life is tough enough, having to hunt for good every day, worry about idiots out there who purposely want to inflict harm, and the many vehicles who never even slow down if they see one in the street. The only true evil comes from man as they are the only creatures who deliberately express hatred, and harm towards these and many other amazing wildlife we have out there. Sylvia, if you’re not hurting them, and believe that you’re truly helping them, which how can feeding them ever hurt, right, but I say just do what you do. Continue to enjoy feeding these birds because I guarantee you will get more satisfaction from them, more thanks, recognition and enjoyment just watching and listening to them then you probably would any human. Thank you for helping them

You can't stop us feeding the birds as birds that use humans for food thrive more so is it really bad that we help these creatures maybe that's what we were put on this planet for was to create waste for scavengers it is the way we see this planet surviving

Thanks for your comment. No I can’t stop anyone from feeding birds but I can educate people. In my opinion, helping birds is to keep them as wild as possible and rescue when required. Surely a better approach is to minimise our waste and stop over exploiting earths resources and marine life! This would solve the food issue with gulls. Remember, apathy is like a disease…. Xx

Can’t stand them personally , flying rats - horrible noisy , aggressive pain in the ass and there everywhere so fail to see why they’re protected ! Also they don’t just protect young on the ground they will challenge anybody walking past a nesting site or a flying chick
