You typically don't install much of gameplan in the preseason outside of week 3. Given the simplicity of Seattle's defense, which is mostly base cover-3 with press corners, it's not a surprise that Rivers picked them apart on the opening drive. He did what he should've done.

Yeah, on 3rd and goal, Rivers exploited Seattle's weakness of leaving TE's open in the middle, the rest of the starting drive was thrown together. Nevertheless, it's a pointless game overall.

Although if Shaq Griffin turns around he's got a pick, so Rivers didn't necessarily go all Brady

Diego Saul To be fair, the majority of the Seahawks secondary was either coming off of an injury that plagued them last season (Sherman), offseason surgery (Chancellor), or a season ending leg-injury (Thomas), so they were more than rusty. That, and both of their corners ahead on the depth chart behind Sherman were out today; number 26, the one targeted frequently and who subsequently gave up the touchdown, was a rookie. As for offense, their top two wide receivers never saw the field (Baldwin and Lockett), the third round draft pick at receiver (Darboh) couldn't play, the number three receiver--number one in this game--went out injured mid drive (Richardson), and they didn't really bother to use their elite tight end (Graham). Also, there isn't really any game-planning for preseason. They didn't really specialize in any tight-end specific coverages (which the Seahawks most definitely would do in the regular season against a player like Gates). Regardless, hats off to the Chargers--maybe they can squeeze out one more playoff run with Rivers.
