Fascinated by the fact that the seahorse is the only animal on earth in which the male becomes pregnant and gives birth, Canadian conservation biologist, Dr. Amanda Vincent, embarked on a long-term study of this fish species. She has since become one of the world’s leading experts on seahorses and has set up several locally run seahorse conservation projects in Southeast Asia. Vincent now coordinates a seahorse protection program at Danajon Bank in the Philippines. This program is designed to dissuade local Handumon fishers from wiping out the local seahorse population. She is also the co-founder of Project Seahorse, which has recently launched a campaign to encourage traditional Chinese medicine practitioners to identify alternatives to seahorses. This organization also campaigns vehemently against other elements of the lucrative international trade in seahorses that have made this species universally vulnerable.
