Why use the Osmo Pocket instead of just trying to do everything with the Mavic Mini? Because the Osmo has higher resolution (4k vs 2.7k), more customizable features (cinelike-d, gimbal modes, etc), a microphone + optional mic input accessory (in case someone is speaking in your shot), and a built-in screen so you can see what you're doing. Plus you can mount the pocket easily on an extension pole - not possible with the Mini. I understand why some people may think they can do these shots with just the Mini - but I really don't think it's a practical solution. These shots are harder than they look. Try them and you'll see what I mean. The point of this techinque is to show you that you can do a traditional gimbal shot with high precision using the Pocket, then at any point transition to an aerial "fly away" shot with a seamless transition in post. Or start with aerial, and transition to gimbal. This would be incredibly difficult to execute smoothly with just the Mini, especially if you try to do it all as one take. But hey, maybe I'm wrong! If you've executed these types of shots with just your Mavic Mini, post your footage below so we can all see it! I'm excited to see the awesome shots everyone has created with their gear.

@Brandon Li, was there ever a time you used fast-follow mode on the Pocket when you took these shots? I was looking forward to seeing your Pocket settings for the Kobe scenes. I've always had this problem with my gimbal stuttering when I do circular panning shots like yours and it doesn't follow my subject as smoothly. But then again, it could be my use of slow-follow too much.
@BrandonLiUnscripted
@BrandonLiUnscripted 3 года назад
@@thekennethkinglim I made this video many months ago so I don't remember. But I think fast mode was always jerky. Slow mode was the only way to get sort of smooth pans.

Terrific work Brandon. I especially liked the last sequence. Something that makes a huge difference in all of these sequences is composition and timing of the move with the subject in frame. The camera movement is always motivated by subject. The transition from outside the house to inside was helped by the spin-sitdown but I think you were still juuuuust playing catch-up to get to the door. These shots take sooo much practice. And then of course there's the whole Post part which I have so much to learn on. Thanks.
@BrandonLiUnscripted
@BrandonLiUnscripted 4 года назад
Thanks, blocking is very important for moving shots. We spent a while rehearsing beforehand, and even so it was difficult to get things just right. The post part is cake compared to the timing of the shooting.

Goodness man. You make things so easy, even with consumer graded product, like DJI osmo pocket. Nicely done. I need to work on my body movements while holding my DJI osmo pocket. And I just realize you don't even have your smartphone phone plugged into your DJI osmo pocket while taking those shots. Amazing.
@BrandonLiUnscripted
@BrandonLiUnscripted 4 года назад
Osmo pocket is tricky, you have to move very very carefully. And set the response to slow speed for 90% of shooting scenarios. Yeah it's easier to move without the smartphone, then just plug in phone to review your footage after.

Amazing work! My first gimbal was the original Osmo. It's amazing how many affordable choices we have now compared to back then. Between the built-in stabilization in my iPhone and having so many choices for one-handed gimbals for mirrorless cameras, I don't think I would have a use for an Osmo type camera anymore.
@BrandonLiUnscripted
@BrandonLiUnscripted 4 года назад
One subtle advantage of Osmo Pocket is that you get stabilization at 1/50 shutter. So you can get gimbal movements with "cinematic" motion blur. iPhone and GoPro stabilization requires fast shutter - no motion blur.

I’ve been honestly contemplating between a GoPro and Osmo pocket to go along with my mavic mini. Seems obvious after watching this 👍
@BrandonLiUnscripted
@BrandonLiUnscripted 4 года назад
The sensor of Osmo Pocket is the same (or very similar) to Mavic Mini, so their shots blend smoothly - that's how I came up with this idea. GoPro will look very different.
@VilleTF
@VilleTF 4 года назад
The Osmo Pocket is better than the GoPro in so many other ways too. I haven't used the Hero 8, but the material from the Osmo looks a hundred times better than the Hero 7, better dynamic range, better colours, less compression and so on. Also, mechanical gimbal stabilisation will always be better than electronic image stabilisation.

I do use cinelike on the Pocket, but unfortunately Mavic Mini doesn’t have it. So I just shoot “flat” on the pocket and then grade it to match the Mini. Better than nothing I guess
