Not covered in this lecture is the patient care quality and service provided in public hospitals in Singapore. When my friend's father had a stroke and was taken to the hospital, a trained patient care expert was assigned to the wife (caretaker) as well as a separate nurse to the patient. They brought food, coffee, and always checked to ensure the wife is in good spirits. Every few hours, they gave an update on his vitals and prognosis. Adding to this, nobody even mentioned payments of any kind. The premises are super clean, and everyone in the hospital is polite and can speak at least two languages including english. If you require an ambulance for an emergency, it will cost you nothing. Hospitals Have to admit you no matter what (And they always do without questions). Oh, the prescription cost is highly affordable too. And, the doctors are Always highly qualified, certified and well paid. I don't know how this can be done with such low expenditure from the GDP.
But it is not possible to bring the whole of the US population under one system like singapore. It would need to be broken down to state and country level. There are counties in America with a bigger population than the whole of Singapore.

The solution to any economic problem will not be on either extreme of the political spectrum. It's all about balancing it out and finding a solution that not only protects the weak and poor, but also fosters opportunity through educational empowerment, cheap healthcare, surpluses, sane property rights, certain industries socialized like the countries oil, and free markets that don't have monopolies within them. Looks like socialized medicine lost this one! This semi socialist is shocked!! :D

But like all SG Gov policies, its very intrusive and might make some feel uncomfortable. The gov dictates the number of each class of wards the hospital have to keep, new equipment purchases needs gov approval, the mandatory saving on the Citizen's part, the mandatory contribution by the company's part. That's one reason why we get a bad rep for being Authoritarian in the first place.

To bring in healthcare in the US all that needs to be done is a proportion of the taxes people pay would go into a savings account. And then insurance would be used for catastrophic health care issues. Routine visits for tests, checkups and minor procedures should be covered by the healthcare savings account.
I've been slowly working my way through this. He gets to Medicare and says it's free and they pay nothing. Not true. One, Medicare beneficiaries pay a premium and two, also generally cover 20% of medical costs (some with certain plans or special needs may not pay anything tho). Tbf, there's also the the qualified Medicare beneficiary (QMB). This would be someone who qualifies for both Medicare and Medicaid (partial or full). That particular group would pay close to nothing for their healthcare expenses

@@mmanese1 sure but this video feels so american to me. Like a wet dream of great care but ONLY if its the cheapest in the world or sth. No system will be perfect and at this point the major Change the us needs to do is to simply finance healthcare in a socialised way and tweak the Details... there msny ways to do it but you never really get around the socialism part of it and it seems like the only reason people like this guy love singapore, is because it gives the illusion of choice and market and bla... 🤷♂️
One tiny correction… the company that runs the Raffles Hotel isn’t the same company as the one that runs the Raffles Hospital. The Hotel is now run by the Accor Group (French Company). The Hospital is a purely homegrown company. They’re really near to one another in location though!
Did Sean study statistics? If Americans lost weight, stopped smoking, exercised, signed advanced directives, we'd cut HC spending by 35% and life expectancy would increase by 10 years. Has Sean been to the far East? Live longer in Asia because you eat vegetables and fish for breakfast, lunch, & dinner... can we get Americans to do this? Probably not - but life expectancy has little to do with healthcare spending in this case - 80% is a behavioral choice. Sean - look it up - correlation does not equal causation. My Chinese father-in-law in 92 .. he lived thru the worst of war and 3rd world conditions.. but had diet of vegetables and fish.. and does Tia Chi (exercise)..
British people are far more unhealthy and spend 3x less per capita! Also less healthy people die sooner and don't require expensive healthcare as they age.
@ Singapore spends 4% of GDP on healthcare. And is ranked 6th in the world. I think its darn good if you ask me. Many of the welfare states in Europe are slowly falling behind on healthcare. Queues getting longer, medical staff shortages, equipment getting older. I'm speaking in general, but there was a study that compared the scandinavian countries to Singapore and i think you will be able to find a lot of faults in a healthcare system where the government has too heavy a hand in. At this current point, Singapore seems to have just the right balance. Walk into a public hospital in Singapore, and you'd think you were in a world class private hospital.
