Ok y’all, listen up: Percussion includes anything you hit to make the sound, which includes piano, bc the strings are hit with hammers, not plucked. Saxophone is a woodwind bc it has a single reed, instead of a mouthpiece. The flute/piccolo is the only exception to this woodwind vs. brass rule. Oboe is a double reed woodwind, and is quite difficult to play. And it’s sister instrument, the *English Horn* , is my pick for best instrument to hear in a soundtrack. Look it up, it’s haunting💕
Piano is usually just generally thrown into the string category. But if you want to get technical you could call it a “chordophone” which is the name they gave to mean it was between a string and a percussion instrument
@@wolfiemusepercussive chordophone (chordophone is just another word for strings) Then you have the cousin organ which is a wind instrument. The whole piano family has "I'm not like the other girls" energy.
6:00 "If you become a RU-vidr or a streamer, don't ever say like 'I can't wait for this game to come out'. Just say nothing because then they might come to you and sponsor you for a game you're going to play anyway" I guess Jack learned his lesson from the attempt to get a Coke sponsorship (all they gave him was a virtual medal) 🥤 💸
You do realize that Sean did say in one of his videos (I forget which one) he actually reached out Coca Cola to sponsor him but they said no, you know why? Cause Coca Cola doesn't do business with RU-vidrs.
Brain fact: koalas may have the smoothest brain, but the animal with the most wrinkled brain are dolphins. It is theorized this is partially due to the social aspect of their lives.
Although humans have never had success teaching an entire language of ours to an animal, the one we got to understand the most words? Dolphins. They can grasp present and past tense. They can't understand future tense, but still. You can straight-up ask a dolphin about past actions and they can recall and answer. (And also one of the dolphins at the Monterey Bay Aquarium lies and says he didn't do anything wrong regardless of what he actually did. Perhaps we've taught them TOO well...)
44:31 No, no-he was Italian, but he worked for the Spanish. That dude sucked fr fr 46:02 Technically, the Flat Earth business was Washington Irving’s fault-He made it up as a joke and some goobers took him seriously. Dammit, Irving!
Saxophone player here for 12 years: -The reed needs to be wet to make sure it doesn't crack. It also allows it to vibrate, which in turn makes the sound. You don't need to slather it in spit dw, just hold it in your mouth for a min or two lol. COULD do it w regular water but the reed ends up in your mouth anyways, so doesn't matter much - Saxophone IS a woodwind even though it's made of brass, cause the wooden bamboo reed is the whole reason it can make noise :)
as a cellist that usually listens to this podcast in the background while i practice, it made me super happy to hear cello is sean's favorite instrument :D
If you’re going by the weather instead of solstices tho then the American layout makes sense. Where I live it’s still snowing in march and it gets up to 115 in august
Grief hits at the worst times and Brain Leak drops at the best times. God I love you two ADHD goblins. It really is just like listening to two of my friends talk. Brings me great comfort on nights like tonight.
I am in a similar spot right now, and I feel this comment in my sad little bones. Thanks for sharing, friend. As one of my friends said to me after my loss, "May his memory soon bring more joy than pain." Going back to that sentiment has helped tremendously, and I hope it helps you a little, too.
Thank you guys for the kind words. A very dear friend of mine lost his battle with depression a couple weeks ago and I am absolutely shattered. I love this community of like-minded, ADHD, goblin people. ❤️
"Don't do things that your dad wants to do, just cus he wants to do them." Truer words have never been spoken. I almost died because of my dad before because he told me to do something I didn't think was smart. Thnx dad.
sadly if they actually did this video they'd probably put them on the instruments they already have experience in lol (i think ethan said he played baritone but he might've meant in middle school idk lol, n sean would be switching genres from metal to orchestra, so they'd probably still be bad at least lol)
14:25 yes basically everything Sean has said is correct. it was extremely fast, they likely heard a bit of a groan, CEO probably said “don’t worry guys! we’ve been here many times, we’re pushing boundaries her-“ BOOM immediate blackness. Also yes Ethan is right you need to roll down your windows if your car falls into a body of water. otherwise when you get more than 4-5 feet below the water, you won’t be able to open any doors due to the pressure.
There's some irony that Fruity Pebbles is the one cereal you picked on for being artificial when it's probably the only fruity cereal that's still flavored with actual fruit juice.
Easter- or Eostre, as the Pagans spell it- is yet another one of those holidays that Catholics and Christians… shall we say _“borrowed?”_ It’s a fertility celebration, which is where the Eggs and Rabbits come from. In a nutshell, Spring, which when everything is born, or comes back to life after the cold, dark, dead of Winter.
Easter isn't borrowed from pagans, that is just a modern myth that comes from social media. The holiday amongst Christians is really called Pascha, so its true name is not an adaptation of the pagan Eostre. It being called Easter in the West DOES come from Eostre, but because Eostre was a time period on the calender, not a specific day and Easter fell during this time on the calendar. As well, it was not just an attempt to change something from pagan to Christian. What the Christian Pascha celebrates is an objectively Christian event that we think actually happened, its not just a Christianized version of a pagan story. And it falls on a pagan holiday because literally every single day ever is a holiday to some pagan out there. It would be impossible to establish a holiday on a day that isn't a holiday to some pagan. And it doesn't even always fall on this same day, this "pagan holiday." The date for Pascha is different every year for Christians, and even then there are two different dates. Orthodox Christian Easter (Pascha) and Western Christian Easter rarely fall on the same day. The rabbit is a thing that, yes, does not come from Christianity. Orthodox and Catholic Christians (the original Christians) typically don't use easter bunnies, at least in official capacities such as Church celebrations. Eggs come from an Eastern Christian story in which Mary Magdalene went to dine with the emperor, and brought a basket of eggs as a gift. She tells the emperor about the resurrection of Christ, to which he replies that the story is as likely as all the eggs changing color. Right as he finishes speaking, all the eggs in the basket turn blood red. This is why originally, Easter eggs in Eastern Christian celebrations were only red, not many colors. This story specifically isn't necessarily one that absolutely happened, but it is the traditional origin of Christian easter eggs.
@@BesaDelCielo14x Exactly! That’s why Christmas is celebrated in December. Because Winter Solstice was celebrated first. It marked the end of the shortest day and the beginning of the longer, warmer days that follow.
Seán: "We should have water on the podcast." Me, remembering the time the US government flooded a house in the Virgin Islands in order to put a dolphin in it so a linguist could teach it English: "That's more possible than you'd think but it's pretty expensive, dude."
As someone who lives in Northern Ireland.... Sean is wrong and Ethan is right on the months in each season.... I don't have a clue where Sean got his info because I learned the same as Ethan in school lol
As someone who was in orchestra for 8 years, I love hearing ppl appreciate stringed instruments. 😊😊😊 Cellos are so good. I also love Violas, they're so underrated and also have deep sounds
As a brain leak guest: the mortitian victor m. Sweeny He is the guy that is in some wired interviews (and the anthony padilla one)and he is really funny and would explain a lot of stupid questions we all have He actually knows about brain leaks!!!!
The demon core was a mix of nuclear elements that wasn't sealed so the reaction didn't start, But the smart part is the core was kepted from closing and starting the reaction with a screwdrive, the guy was mesing around with the core and it sliped and closed causing the reaction to take place.
For the naps thing, humans used to sleep twice a day. One at night and a smaller one at like 2-3 basically humans would do all their work the first half of the day, sleep, then spend the rest of the day/night just hanging out or eating the shit they caught but because of the 9-5 Capitalistic system, you can't do that anymore. almost no one gets enough sleep at the end of the day also fun fact its kinda still a thing in spain, where from 2-5 in smaller towns all the shops will close, evryone will just go home to eat lunch and have a nap then from 5 onward the next shift of work happens
It's scary how normalized it is to consume food with thousands of ingredients instead of just eating food with nothing but WHAT IT IS. I'd rather have simple scrambled eggs for breakfast over sugary cereal any day of the week.
You can put it in water! Many players do keep it in water for longer concerts to switch it out, but if you are just playing, it can ruen the Reed getting it too wet, it won't be payable. ALSO I PLAY CELLO!!! I felt so happy when you said it's your fave ❤️
I like how out of the both of them Ethan was the one who got the identification of the saxophone correct a saxophone is a woodwind for the reason he said it's because the mouth piece or the reed is wood which makes it a woodwind a brass instrument would be a trumpet because the mouth piece is metal not wood which wood make it a brass instrument not a woodwind like a saxophone.
Sean getting the details of the demon core kind of right is strangely eerie lol Edit: okay them both being like half right about a bunch of things is a little frustrating, but I guess that's why podcasts have good engagement
So Easter might be an Old German word resurrection. The easter bunny may have been introduced to America via German immigrants. Upon further research it was a egg-laying hare called “Osterthase” or “Oschter Haws.” Its around the same time as the Spring Equinox so a lot of people now celebrate Easter of a time of renewal and fertility. 🤷♀️
The reason our seasons start at different times is we have lots more snow here in America during the months of Jan - Early April. In fact our snowiest months are February and March here in Colorado! Also a biphasic sleep schedule (two sleeps daily) has been done culturally in many different places. i.e. Spain, la siesta. But it was also done in the Medieval ages as well, and there can actually be some benefits for some people. Great Episode fellas!
Christopher did not discover america, he spent most of his life bounding around the bahama islands. Washington Irving had writen that Columbus discovered america trying to establish patriotism in america.
It's cool to hear Ethan say that Columbus day is now Indigenous People's day :) I'm Mohawk from Ontario Canada, and I was part of one of the many camera crews who were documenting the first Indigenous People's day on Alcatraz Island in 2018, and it was an amazing experience (and early in the morning lol)
Retired sax player here… saxophones are indeed under woodwinds because of the reed sorry Sean point goes to Ethan lol. Also, there’s wood under the keys that closes the holes to make the note. And no we can’t dip the reeds in water it wouldn’t absorbs the same. The heat of your mouth makes the wood softer and moist. Also, saxophone is one the most disgusting instruments. There’s different techniques we have to do depending if we’re playing classic, orchestra, jazz or blues. (Or as I like to call them the tonguing and throating techniques 😏) but fr So much saliva collects in the mouth piece and neck you’re constantly sucking back your own spit and swallowing your own spit. It’s fucking gross. Not to mention the waterfall that comes out when you take your instrument apart later. I was a woodwind player in school, but the saxophone was the one that always collected more spit. Fun fact. 😂 yw
So canadian here and this is how ive always seen seasons, Summer: May June July August, Fall: September October, Winter November December January Febuary, Spring March April.
GUYS, I KNOW THIS ONE, easter is another one of those holidays that christianity appropriated from a pagan fertility holiday. the eggs represent fertility and I can't remember what the bunny is about, the bunny might just be for commercial use
The guy who cut corners got what he sowed for having the lives of others and his own gone in a flash. If there's anyone who "deserves" it, it's him, imo.
No because crackling oat bran is sO GOOD. It keeps its crunch for like 30mins. Which is amazing for my ADHD ridden self, forgetting I was even eating it haha.
I'm not watching the whole thing rn because I'm tired, but as an American, I agree about our cereals, the only ones I like are Trix(but I can't eat them anymore for 1 reason) and lucky charms, and that's only because of sugar, it's hard to make sugary things taste bad because it's sugar, also Jack's American accent sounds like Gabriel Iglesias' American cowboy/country impression
Caffeine may stay in your system for 10 hours but it’s not active for that entire time. It’s going to most affect you for the first 5-6 hours and then comedown is the caffeine half life/metabolization for a couple hours
The whole thing with the sub disaster is that it was so easily avoidable that its hard to feel sympathy. The ceo was so arrogant that when he was warned about the very danger he was putting himself in He acted like a spoilt child and thought they were just jealous of him. The kid going with his dad is very sad and I feel bad for their families but given how the step son acted (he was more interested in OF models) Im not sure they are as sad as youd think they might be. Still it was all completely avoidable and so I cant really feel all that bad about it
I think this was when they went to Austin Texas, because Mark was doing follow up shots for Iron Lung. Also, it was just the day before, that he got the blood in the eyes, as the brain leak movie board shows, 27/6/23. 👍
They were asking what would be the worst thing to bite into if you thought it was chocolate and I was just repeatedly saying “ranch” and I got so happy when Sean said it. One time my grandmother accidentally gave me a container filled with ranch instead of cannoli dip (cannoli filling) and I had a spoonful and that terror is engraved into my memory. I cannot consume ranch plain because of that.
