@@tsquirrel8675 the ppl who thought he'd get obliterated, KOd look stupid today. He hurt Yan multiple times..bloodied him up. Ppl questioned his heart & he himself got hurt & still kept pushing. Won Rd3 too even after it.
I'm really starting to like this kid. He's a free spirit, doesn't seem to have an ounce of ill will in him, and seems pretty straight forward and honest. He certainly showed up for this fight. Nice job young man.
He’s being patient because he’s a smart business man and knows his current contract sucks. He was refusing to fight in the top ten and ppv until he got to the last couple fights in his contract so when it was time to renegotiate he was in the right place at the right time. Very smart young guy. He’s been very open about this strategy.
@@notyouraveragejoe4865 that’s something I wish more people noticed and respected, he’s playing the game the smart way. However a lot of fans have been indoctrinated ,subconsciously, in the ways of Dana and the UFC especially when it comes to holdouts and pay. Kudos to you for noticing his strategy man
I’m happy Sean showed everyone that he isn’t all talk. That jump in competition can only be backed up by fighting and the talking/fame won’t intimidate those guys! I’ve been a huge fan of Sean’s and I see this humbled him and opened his eyes. He’s now a legit staple in the 135 pound division and that can’t be denied weather he gets the belt next or not! Hell yeah Sean, you killed it! Showed what you’re capable of and that you aren’t soft and you don’t try and find ways to quit when it gets going tough! You showed your grit
Been in the ufc since 2017 so it's good to see he can start competing with the top ranked guys and fighting for the belt. Really liked good out there and no matter who got the victory O'Malley made a huge leap into his career. All of us fans were lucky to get such a good fight!
@@ethanh23838 Yes he did but a lot of fighters have the same amount of matches as him. He's a few years behind on where he should be because of his leg injury but it looks like it was the best thing for him. I hope to see him against Cory Sandhagen next or someone else up near the top 5. He's earned it and has me wondering how good his wrestling and grappling really is.
I think leading up he was being about as realistic about it as I've seen any fighter be. He was giving Yan props but also acknowledging that his style and dimensions matched up well againt the Russian. Hope he doesn't lose that clear headed mentality.
O’Malley showed his gameness and abilities in that octagon to be so young and well rounded to go toe to toe with a guy who is an absolute killer is impressive
@@nbeaudoi2837 28 is still pretty young for MMA and getting to the top of the division. Look at the ages of the top 10 he is young. Especially to get to the #1 contender spot
@@simmahdwn482 He lost do to takedowns....scoring high for takedowns when no gound&pouned or sub attempts is kinda gay to be honest....but he is the only fighter that put Yan in deep waters.....should've been a draw.
@@obijuankenobi420 ya sure. A draw would have been fair. He put on a great performance against petr. Pretty sure they rocked each other equal time.. just didn’t see sean win (neither did most fighters I’ve seen react to it) can’t leave it to the judges these days as triple c said
Even if the judges had given it to Petr, today was a huge vindication for Sean. He proved he belongs in the upper echelon of the division. I don't love his chances against Sterling tho, he's really gotta work that ground game if he even has a chance.
@@IamAgrocerybag you guys seriously don’t know how judging works. Damage is most important, takedowns and ground control with no damage or submission threats mean nothing when compared with damaging shots…
@@Chris-2 wtf are talking about. There’s no way to measure damage inflicted. Like checking a kick… If ground control didn’t matter then why tf is it judged, and even then yan won in striking and most of yans significant strikes were off a take down. It’s a blatant robbery no other way around it
I haven't liked Sean a whole lot since the Chito fight and his excuses. I honestly thought Yan was going to knock him out. I even thought he lost the fight but it was super close and he took some big shots and almost knocked Yan out. So I did nothing but gain a whole lot of respect for him and wouldn't have been shocked or upset
This guy is a legend in the making. He understands the modern MMA world. Branding and saying the right things, being I nthe right places. Having said that listen to him , all raw after a fight like this, he's a very articulate , smart, tough dude. All the power to him. I never liked his ass, but he has earned it
@@rileynewman6507 im happy for him- hes come a long way but sterling isnt exaactly a tough guy to beat imo- everyone knew he was beatable as long as you can keep him off your back- either way sean deserves it he looked great so respect

This fight just proves how little ground time matters if you do NOTHING with it. You have to completely control, transition, and throw strikes for your ground game to matter. Sean got up fairly easily from Yans takedowns. There wasn’t much struggle from Sean vice versa there wasn’t dominance on the ground for Yan. If you get to the ground you have to dominate or it’s useless. Yans undeniably amazing but he hasn’t been finishing these guys he clearly has a skill gap on. I personally think he’s better than Sean and Aljo, he’s just not finished people as of late.
I wish it was always like this. Guys will take down someone because they can’t stand with the opposite and then do nothing with it but they call it as “controlling the fight”.
@@dtf4life1 The fact this guy even made it through this whole fight says a lot about his skills. You sound pretty salty. Yan is an animal…Bums won’t last against him. Sean is a top 5 in the division like it or not
@@deyvi5251 How can anyone not be salty when you pay for this shit, and they always f*ck shit up in the decisions. Im salty asf, and you should be too, if you want this sport to be taken seriously.
I think the biggest surprise from this fight was how well Sean handled the wrestling/grappling. Sure Petr got the best of him, but it was much closer than I thought
@@mikejones6996 yeah he I totally agree with you he won our hearts but it was a very close fight I would just love to see 5 rounds. I love Sean honestly great fighter but such a close fight
@@matthewyarborough8328 Oh wow he landed a knee and got yan bleeding. That means he totally won the fight. Forget the fact he got taken down 6 times and controlled for over 1/3 of the fight. This is boxing after all not mixed martial arts
I just need to say: before the judges even announced. I was So Proud of Sean and your Corner work Tim. You guys proved you deserve to be in there with the best dude in the world! Sean damaged Yan more than anyone else has. Sean showed great ground game work, Sean showed toughness and durability. Everyone was doubting. Regardless I am proud of you guys!
@@abcmoz0323 Wrong. Yan often negates his opponent's offense through his effective high guard. Then after they punch themselves out on this high guard he turns up the pressure. He also did this very effectively against sandhagen who also has a 70 inch reach.(Sean has a 72 inch only 2 inches more than sandhagen) Yan's high guard was never effective against O'Malley because sean kept on finding the holes in it and striking through those chinks in the armor instead of landing on top of Yan's guard. No one else who has fought yan was accurate enough to accomplish this. You're a perfect example of the Dunning Kruger effect. Every casual thinks their opinion matters these days. It doesn't.
but why do we need to give him credit for "hanging with a guy". He lost, it was a clear loss, period. He didn't win, he didn't show anything really.....other than he's a decent fighter.
@@craiggagnon8407 He looked better than decent. And the reason O'Malley is being praised is because he jumped the competition level from unranked straight to the very top of the division and nearly came off with a legitimate win against the most dangerous guy. Sean had a few moments were he rocked Yan heavily, and also defended very well against every takedown. That's high level mma. Especially when you consider people were calling a 2nd round KO of O'Malley
I really struggled to like this guy before tonight, after seeing his humble side its fair to say that has changed. Great fight tonight, I'm sure you have a bright future dude.
In my unprofessional opinion lol it could of went either way in this brawl. Suga showed he could hold it down with a beast like Yan. Yan controlled the time and ground game, but Suga got out of a few tough situations on the ground and Suga and Peter both have granite chins. Taking some shots from Yan and Suga staying in the pocket throwing his all too, and Yan landing his big shots. Great fight from both these warriors.

Congratulations Sean O'Malley. That's the second time that Petr Yan won, but lost a decision. Both O'Malley and the commentators were silent; Both knew O'Malley did not beat Yan. Fantastic fight to watch.

I just rewatched the fight I didn’t feel good about the decision but if you watch it back it was extremely close. Sean definitely proved he belonged in there with the top of the division. Sterling’s style is a huge prob for Sean tho.
Honestly the first guy I’ve seen say it’s close. I thought round 1 was Sean’s, and I was betting on Petr 😂 Could definitely see it going either way, but surprised no one thought he won the first
@@ArdynSol I’m sure it’s on RU-vid for a little while m, I steam and record every card been doing it since ufc 85ish I have thousands of fights saved on 2 different terabyte drives hahaha.
Yo big advice from a og fan when you rewatch a fight turn the sound off so you don’t hear commentators and cheering. It helps not to sway your opinion.
they only score on the ground if they are threatening a stoppage, or landing ground and pound. Sean was never really in danger on the ground at all and got up most of the time without taking anything
O'Malley won Rd.1 Yan won Rd.2 I had O'Malley edging out Rd.3, but i thought that final takedown by Yan was gonna possibly flip the Round to Yan. Very close fight, cuda went either way, no robbery...
O’Malley did not win round one, there was many take down in round one as well. I feel like the judges here don’t give much credit for them. I was hoping Sean win but not like this.
Been my favorite fighter since DWCS I saw he dog in him & knew if he got the right team he’d be a monster. So happy for him man. Everyone who thought he’s a joke can now sit back & watch him dominate while swallowing their words‼️
The sport is all about doing the most damage and it’s not hard to argue that Sean did more damage. Hardly any shots landed in 5 min off control time for yan. Could’ve gone either way but for sure not a robbery.
Sean proved everybody wrong. We all thought he was on Munhoz's level. Top 12-8 level fighter. He showed he was a top 5 level fighter tonight. Even if I scored it for Yan, he still took a round off and the 1st was at least debatable. He gave him a run for his money and that is very commendable. He will probably be a future champion
He won for a clear reason…. Control and takedowns which led to no damage, it was clear yan was down on points and trying milk rounds using control time on the ground but it’s basically stalling if your just holding them there not doing damage or looking for a sub
@@kaladinstormblessed765 Its a wrong decision, what made you think I can't? 2 of the 3 judges were wrong and need to get their head checked. Credit where credit is due, O'malley wasn't far off from winning, he had a great performance and is one of the top contenders.
@@Yeet42069 i meant to say he was not robbed. They were going back and forth. It's yan who needs to evaluate his game. How many split losses a fighter can have before he acknowledges that his game is not to the point. May be people r expecting too much from him. He can't walk through top guys. Split decisions r never robbery
@@kaladinstormblessed765 fr people acting like yan hasnt lost more than once to a split decision.... also, we can deny that suga being thrown to a top contender being rank 11 is kinda sussy, but we all know how that works. Props to sean!
Bro the same people saying Yan won the second Aljo fight because “control time” didn’t matter are the same people saying Yan won this fight because all the sudden “control time” magically matters to them now. 😂
guess what genius! control time is the most score valuable stat along with sig. strikes. aljo-yan 2 was extremely close and thats fine. when u see what aljo did to tj, u know how good yan is, who is very small compared to the rest. omalley looks like hes 2 classes above him, and yan still ragdolled him. he is one of the most talented and hard working fighters in the ufc and this kind of robbery is extremely career damaging. now idont see anyone taking sterling down, that guy is a monster... they need to do yan right, and after sterling is done with omalley, give yan a title fight!
And for the record i would’ve given Yan the win but y’all acting like the judges don’t get it wrong 20+ times a year considering every fight on every card. Again, y’all proudly holding up a clown college certificate
I know what you mean but he was saying "they kept saying they should kick my legs, than they should try to take me down" Petr did all that, still won. It could've gone both ways imo, the takedowns by Petr didn't do any damage, Sean scored more point with jabs and legg kicks. He got my respect for sure
@@fruitlandgrizzly - Me a casual? Lmao. Wrong dude buddy. Been doing MMA for 18 years. Boxed all my life. Been a fan of MMA for 23 years. I’m a MMA geek in fact. Huge Pride FC, Fedor, Sakuraba, Vovchanchyn, Cro Cop fan. If you’re aware of these fighters skills and have seen them, before they got old and garbage, I’ll be very impressed. Anyone that calls someone a casual are usually a casual themselves. #fact Nice try though son.
I believe in the rules that the UFC has been discussing, damage outweighs takedowns because takedowns don’t mean much unless submission attempts/ground control are involved. Ground control was technically involved, but no real ground n pound or submissions were really implemented by Yan. Basically alot of scrambling on Sugas part. I think ground control SHOULD be used as a sort of tie breaker for folks who don’t damage each other, but the problem is that Sugas striking damaged Yan pretty good. I believe Yan got outstruck down the stretch.
I disagree i just think he was being pushed to the limit. Fighting for his life basically. Yan is a beast He handled it well tho, knows what it feels like now
Strike numbers don't tell the story, O'Malley was flicking out jabs that were barely landing and also just tapping at Yan in round 3 with kicks, other than the big knee. Everything Yan landed was vicious wether it was leg kicks or body kicks or big punches, plus he had the takedowns, including a big slam in round one, with some GNP. Not a brutal robbery but definitely feel like Yan won, close fights can have a clear winner but O'Malley at least showed that he is right there at the top of the division regardless, just worry for him against Aljo that's like the worst matchup possible.
Just wish the judges didn’t make that frankly suspicious decision (no commission) because the story should be “yep Yan is better… but O’Malley is a LOT closer that most people thought”
The way Sean is talking in all these interviews I think he was seriously rocked and is almost scared about what happened during that fight. I think fighters need more time to digest what they went through before media
I think hes one of the only fighters seriously worried about CTE, hes actually quite versed in optimising health for performance so not surprising. And he knows he got hit hard by yan. Hes a lot smarter than most fighters. I dont think hell have a long career hell probably retire early when he thinks he made enough cash which is the right approach imo.
I agree & disagree. Sean is big for this weight class. His stand up is miles better than Aljo's. He's a sniper & if Sterling leaves himself open he'll catch him. But if he gets his back.. yah not good lol
@@alex__2265 yan is a better striker than O’Malley tho . O’Malley could not keep his hands up for shit and at one point got clipped with the same punch 3 times back to back to back . And he’ll never be the champ as long as people like merab or aljo
First time I've ever really given him the time and I can say I'm impressed. He's been on a tear and going toe to toe with Yan is saying something. I like how he doesn't want to compare or speak on the fight until he's watched it. Respectful and mature
Glad he's reacting like this. I don't believe he won, but he showed up and performed. He's just as good as he said he was, I just think petr was a bit better here. Such a good fight.
The facts that Yan put him to the test, will now only make Suga look closer to making himself better. We have yet to see how good he actually can be. Good deal Suga, learn from these close ones. 👌
