Hello, my favorite mud larks! If you were archeologists, you'd dig a test trench (2 foot x 2 foot would be enough for what you're doing) in areas you suspect might have something of interest. For example, you could dig a trench a few feet away from where you're working to see if the stones/paving goes out that far. If it does, dig another trench a few meters out. An old friend of mine, who was a professional chauffeur/gardener back in the days when big houses had "staff", gave me some excellent advice I'll pass along to you. When you're digging, always face the area you've finished, rather than what's ahead of you. It is encouraging to see progress and not as off-putting facing what's to come. 😉

@thecornerhouseproject 6 месяцев назад
Good evening to you :-) Mud larks indeed we are, we have plenty of mud. We did a couple of test patches in places that sounded like a nice large stone when we used the "probing rod" and found them to be small pebbles, roots, a bit of rubbish and what not. As we will now clear the entire area we just thought "sod it" lets just dig and scrape. We do love the idea of facing what you have done vs what is to come, that is really good advice. One advantage with us facing at what is to come, is that the soil gets less and less deep toward to two trees and that is the bit we are looking forward to getting to. We are hoping that the larger stones that are just in the soil have now finished and the soil is easier and faster to move. Thank you so much for watching, commenting, giving advice and of course being a channel member :-)

Thank you very much indeed Marian. Oh we really hope so too. We think they go all the way back going by the bar we use to stick in the ground. Isn't it a lovely way to look at it. I am sure they moaned when it rained for days on end, got their boots stuck in the mud and ran out of steam at the end of the day just like we do but they did it and so can we. And really, we aren't doing any hard work compared to them and we have the modern day benefits of electric, a shower, a power washer, etc and so on. And don't get us started on how on earth the shaped and lifted the massive corner stones for the buildings. Thank you C Ferguson for shining such a lovely light on us doing it by hand. And of course thank you so much for watching and commenting :-)

Thank you very much Kate. 5.6k now I think which is unbelievable. It is real life Kate, it is our life, day to day and what we are doing. I think sometimes people forget that it is indeed our real lives. We do things the way we do because it is the way we think best and what works for us, it may not always be logical but it wouldn't be us if it was hahaha. We are learning so much as we go along and making mistakes as we go too, it slows us down but we will get there in the end. Thank you again for watching, subscribing and being a channel member. Have a lovely Easter :-)

Monumental task you have there to expose the stones. I came across something similar in my backyard when I went to plant a flower bed and found a 1960’s paver patio with green, red and yellow concrete 12 x 8 pavers. The patio is 10 feet x 30 feet. They are 8 inches under the lawn surface so I really can’t plant anything over then. I would keep the patio but I was having drainage issues in that part of the yard and couldn’t figure out why. Turns out it was the pavers that were installed incorrectly causing the issue. It is a monster removing them myself at 64 but I’ll surely finish it this spring.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 6 месяцев назад
Wow that is an undertaking you have there as well! I bet you couldn’t believe it when you found them?! We’re rooting for you with that too. We think some of our drainage issues may come from the soil on top of the bedrock but we will try and get some drainage in this year and hopefully that will help us out a bit.

Thrilled that the channel is growing so quickly and that people are finding you and seeing how good you are! Not only do you provide interesting vlogs but you are also genuinely nice people. The area right outside the back door of the outbuilding is coming along very nicely and it will deserve all of the time and energy you are giving it. Can hardly wait for you to uncover the rest of it and see what has been hidden for the last 50 years! I forgot to ask in what part of the county your homestead resides. If you are near any particular town or really in the "wilds"?? Look forward to seeing you both on Friday and see how much farther you have gone in taking out the mud etc.!!! Take Care and a wish and hope for better weather!!

❤️ Thank you! We’re really pleased too! To say the least! It’s been amazing the last couple of weeks, it’s blown our minds a bit to be honest! Well, thank you for saying such kind words, it means a lot 🥹 oh neither can we with uncovering the rest, it’s slow going and it feels like it will never get there, but clearing the bottom part of the land felt like that at times and we got there finally with that, so the soil will be gone too….eventually 😂 We are not too far from a few bigger town lands the biggest and most well known I would think is Carrick-on-Shannon. We are out in the wilds a bit but not too bad as most places for shopping and the like range from 10-20mins away. So really not too bad at all. Look forward to seeing you here Friday too. Fingers crossed for a bit better weather too!

Great job guys. Its getting bigger by the day. Clay might have come from the bottom of the trench dug for the pipe. Ive seen this before they use the clay to support the pipe as nothing is going to shift it once it compacts. Would explain your drainage too . Apart from the rock you're built on.if you have clay with peat rich topsoil on top .water will run along the clay not sink in. The stuff here you really could make crockery with.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 6 месяцев назад
Good evening Mitch, how are you? "The stuff here, you really could make crockery with." - I can see a scene from Ghost happening... hahaha I think you have hit the nail right on the head and the more we deal with the land up the top the more we learn. On a wheel barrow run yesterday my foot sunk about 6 inches into the ground straight onto bedrock. When you look around there is some popping up out of the grass. You can lift a sod of grass and the bedrock is looking at you. It is like a giant wig. The same goes for the back of the outbuilding. I already found some lumps but the more you look, the more you find it. Our plan apart from the bridge of a bedrock channel, it to find the wet spots which never drain and remove the soil so we can try and sort moving the the water from that area to another, or maybe fill it with gravel first and then soil on top. But that is for another day lol. Thanks Mitch. Have a nice evening :-)

Never knew that about raised beds. Interesting. I guess the clay would have given the pipe some protection being soft but clingy. Whenever I do physical work in the mud and rain, I don't enjoy it at the time but always feel good later. Tired but good. Especially in the clean air. You're making good progress. Painstaking😊
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 6 месяцев назад
Hi Michael, thank you for watching and commenting :-) We knew about raised beds but I would think you normally build the container first and then fill it. But, this is us so are doing it in reverse haha. We agree with the clay around the pipe being used for protection / support, but it is a pain for drainage. Yeah the weather isn't really a problem, a sunny day is much nicer than rain but we carry on regardless. Like you say, at the end of the day, it was worth it. The uncovering is slow, but now with the pressure washer, hopefully it will be fast. Thanks again :-)

Hi Dyanne Yes, this is a 200 year old (ish) outbuilding with a possible courtyard / farmyard behind it. The farmhouse is a whole different kettle of fish. The house is now warm and dry with new joists, floors and temporary ceiling panels. It got us through the winter. There is a lot of work on the house to be done, but working on the land has been lovely. We don't plan on ever selling it as the location, the land and the people just makes it all perfect. The Hugelkulture does seem to be a way to stick a load of stuff in a pile and cover it all up and call it a bed haha. At least you put your bed around it afterwards too. The amount of water is incredible. For what was just an hour or so of work, the pay off is brilliant. Now we need dry weather to see how long we last without rain and our water running out. Do we need more water storage to get through the dry spells. Time will tell. Thank you again :-)

5000! Yea! Every project seems to uncover mysteries about the place. Wonder if there is a county historian that might be able to interpret what you’ve uncovered? By the way, does it ever stop raining in Ireland?😊 Oh, and Dawn, wear safety glasses when jet washing. 👁️

5000 indeed and we are so so chuffed Ed, and you are one of them so thank you so much. It does seem that we have been very lucky with surprises and mysteries in and out of the house. They always seem to slow us down though. We knew we wanted that as a raised area with maybe a nice stone wall holding back the soil and then look what happens... Dawn finds some stones.... 12 months later we are still digging hahaha. Believe it or not.... .sometimes it stops. These last couple of weeks since the snow it has pretty much rained most days but then in a weeks time it may not rain properly for a couple of weeks. When I say properly, I mean the water tanks don't fill quick enough. Dawn said upon reading your comment that she did think about wearing them. So next time Ed she may have them on lol. Thank you again for joining us and commenting :-)

Good evening Denise, how are you today? It is an option we chatted about yesterday but getting a dry enough spell at the moment would be the issue and could take ages before we got to sweep. The rain we are having at the moment is nuts and the soil, even thin bits are never drying before the rain starts again and we would just be sweeping mud. The pressure washer does a good job but sadly does take some of the gravel bits out. Once we have removed all of the soil from the area, hopefully it will get to a stage where it is clean enough to just use a broom and water when it needs cleaning. Bit by bit we are getting there. Thank you for watching, commenting, being a subscriber and of course being a channel member. :-) :-)

Hi Ben and Dawn, Hope you’re both keeping well. The progress is just amazing. I was watching you and my line of sight kept getting drawn to the bottom of the garden. At one time you couldn’t even see past the area at the back of the outbuildings. Should be so proud of yourselves 😊 I just love your sympathetic way of doing things, which is exactly what you should do with such an old property. Always a pleasure to come a long for the ride, hope you get some dry days though, I do worry about you 2 getting ill working in the wet and the cold, but does show what absolute troopers you are💪 Great news on the subscribers 🎉 See you next time 😊 Take care guys ❤

Hi Mark, we are good thank you, how about you? It’s beautiful to see all the way down there now isn’t it? We can stand indoors on the landing and look through the window and see all the way to the bottom now where before we had a job to see past the dip in the land before. It looks so lovely to look out and see it. We are hugely proud of what we’ve done. I think you’re right with an old property and the way it should be done. We won’t always do it right I would think but we always have the intention of doing things with care and respect for the age of it. It’d be nice to have some dry days as it does make it so much easier to keep the enthusiasm going! 😂 Chuffed to bits with the subscribers! Didn’t think we would ever get that sort of numbers watching us. 🥳 Thank you for being one of those! See you next time 😊

Good evening Walking Stick Woman, how are you? That's good, we are pleased you are enjoying it, we don't want it to get boring but sadly this is what we are working on at the moment (Friday may be a bit different though). Fingers crossed we can uncover it quicker now as the large stone that we pull out of the soil seem to be less the further from the building we go. And the soil depth is also less. Thank you for always joining us and commenting tonight :-)

Woohooo.. happy to see your progress. Was going suggest that you build raised beds with all the soil, you can use rocks or sticks for the border and then cover up with clippings, until you can get planting veggies or flowers etc. The beds can stay untouched as the wormies will work their way through and will be pretty fertile for you, even if you leave till next year.. you could even bury your kitchen scraps and cardboard etc in the beds. glad for your video and look forward to see when post. you are living my dream.. 😍

We can't take the credit for the raised beds at this stage, we just needed somewhere to put the soil we are moving and so many comments said about raised beds. We were going to do some at some point, but not just yet haha. We will use corrugated sheets to create the containers but wanted to get some soil moved from the "courtyard" as the priority. We love your idea of chucking in kitchen scraps and cardboard as we are not sure we will get much planted this year. We would have liked to but the land had other ideas and took longer than we thought. We are really pleased you enjoy our videos. See you Friday :-) Thank you for watching, commenting and being one of our subscribers :-)

Congratulations on 5K Subscribers! It looks like there might be the remnants of a dry stone wall - it could be just another pile of rocks left over from building repairs and left over mortar may have been tipped there as well, It's so interesting to see that area unearthed. I keep waiting for Dragon Bones lol Keep an eye out for small medallions and coins as the area was farmed by Monks centuries ago. Have you run a metal detector over the soil you moved? I'm really impressed with the choice you made for the raised garden beds and where you decided to put them. I had to laugh though - neighbours may wonder who you've buried in the back garden ROFL. I so look forward to you uploads! Thank you! Clearing all that out has made it so much safer for putting up a scaffold and ladders for outbuilding repairs and for building materials. What a beautiful courtyard it will be when you are done. Love those smiles

Awwww thank you Janie, we are so pleased with 5k subscribers and just think, you were one of them so early on. We think it will be just more stones piled up, but we will dig around them and see what lies behind them as they are next to and on top of the gully and we don't know how long that is or if it even goes any further. Time and a spade will tell. Dawn has the eyes of a Hawk which is why it is so nice to be doing it by hand. I tend to miss things but Dawn could be down at the plum trees and would still see something up at the top haha. No metal detector yet. Don't they look just like that? We have just started the third one, I think the sooner we get the containers made the better. Just the little bit that is cleared makes such a difference. There is still some soil in some gaps but until we have it all clear we aren't to bothered about. The final jet wash will be amazing. Thank you so much Janie for always watching and your MASSIVE comments on every video :-) See you Friday :-)

Congrats on 5K subscribers!! I wonder if the pile of stones isn't from where they originally put in the sewer pipe. One of those stones is clearly cut. I think you are smart to steer clear of that area for now. It is coming on that is for sure! I believe it was a courtyard where they did have the animals, which is probably why its not proper cobble but stones that worked to create a hard area where they could do the tasks that you need to on farm animals (ie cleaning hoofs, castration, initial butchering, cleaning them). I am interested to see how the stone gully runs and where it ends. I am concerned for that elder bush/tree (near that other stone pile) that once you properly clear it may not have enough soil to remain. I would consider removing it and transplanting it elsewhere if possible that would also open up the ditch a little more. But wow! What progress has been made. Just remember every path begins with a single stone. I hope for dryer weather for you so the soil isn't so heavy to move. Keep slogging on! Every inch is progress! Great job and thanks for taking us along.
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 6 месяцев назад
Thank you very much! We’re chuffed to bits with that! Yeah we think those stones probably do come from where the pipe was put in so we will keep those to one side for maybe placing back on top when we get it all uncovered. I think you’re probably right with what you think it was used for. It would make sense wouldn’t it? Ooh we are too with the gully, we haven’t dug any further with that just yet but I’m sure we will get to it soonish lol Funnily enough I said to Ben the other day we need to move the elder, I’m not sure how easy it is to move, I need to read into the root spacing so that we don’t chop through any of it because I would like to keep that. It’s not a very old tree so I’m hoping the root hasn’t spread too far. Always slogging on, more slog today, still plenty more slog to go🤣 but it’s looking good so far if you ignore the mud! Today was actually not bad at all weather wise. Which has been lovely. 🥰 No problem at all with taking you with us, it’s our pleasure!

I’m sorry I didn’t watch yesterday. Power washing is fantastic. Unfortunately, last week we were power washing the front patio and didn’t know that the pipe connected to the outdoor spigot had a break. Flooded our basement, luckily we hadn’t finished the walls down there. The joys of home ownership. Now that you are exposing more you can see the first owners graded it so rain water run off is toward your ditch. I think the gully is to just move any animal slurry away faster…keeping things less odiferous…maybe? Are you planning to put gravel over the part that was dug out for the piping, or move pavers back in place?
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 6 месяцев назад
No problem at all and no need to apologise, we’re here whenever lol. Oh no! 😟 how soul destroying for you! Hope everything is alright now? Yes and I think the more we uncover the more apparent it will be with the water run off. When we jet wash it does seem to,run off to the ditch so we’re very pleased with that. I think when we uncover the lot it will most likely run downwards towards the trees that stand at the bottom edge of that area. Yes we will definitely put something back over that area. Gravel could look good actually but we will see as we go.

it is amazing to see the original path wow.. will it dry out with the summer or is it rainy there much of the time all year? I seen the jet wash but wasn't sure of the rain part.

It should dry out tight the summer but, yes, it does rain rather a lot lol….but it does tend to rain small showers and then the sun reappears so it not so bad really. We’re looking forward to it all being uncovered so we can see how it fairs with the rain and the drainage.

Hi! From Wyoming, USA! Congrats on reaching 5k subscribers! I'm intrigued by your elevated garden bed technique and have a couple questions. Since you're using decaying material what's to prevent the beds from getting a fungus that will harm your plants? I could hear you sloshing when walking to the soon to be beds, what's to keep the wet from wicking up into the beds?

Hi Gayle Just in addition to Dawn's bit, Here is a link to a page which "sort of" explains Hugelkultur with photos, diagrams and some great info. It is new to us so we can only learn as we go. I hope you find the info useful :-) extension.okstate.edu/fact-sheets/sustainable-landscapes-creating-a-hugelkultur-for-gardening-with-stormwater-management-benefits.html

Yes, I it does doesn’t it? We sort of don’t either! We only know about it because a couple of people had mentioned it in the comments and we thought we’d have a go and bonus…it means we get to chuck some of the bits and pieces lying around in it! Haha you’re welcome, better than getting your hair wet eh? Can’t say it’s warm in there but it is at least dry! Thanks Jackie! As always, you make us smile 😊❤️

I sure hope you two have a hot tub to soak your muscles and bones in at the end of your hard working days…maybe with a glass of wine as well 🥂, great job…so exciting

Ooooh a hot tub, ooooh a bath.... hahaha. We are lucky we are not still showering outside lol. To be fair, we don't ache. Maybe we are not working hard enough. We did ache when we started all of this though last June. It was such a shock to the system. Joists, smashing out stone pockets, floors, ceilings... we did hurt then and a bath would have been so nice. Hopefully the end result will be worth the work :-) Thank you for watching and commenting tonight Andie :-)

The pressure washer is messy and take time. When we have to clean areas like that first give it a run with a yard brush and the when using the pressure washer keep brushing the water and dirt away. Yard brush is about 14 inch’s wide but has long bristles and a long shaft . U know when u need to go to buy one Agri store. I don’t know how u keep going or how u don’t seam to get head colds and the like. Was just looking at ur closing sequence and was thinking that cow shed ur work at the back of must have been the original house for the farm and then it occurred all old house had a well for water of if it was deep a hand pump. To find a well would solve a few of ur water problems. You should go out and visit a few old Irish cottages or farm to see how they compare to what u have.

Ahh yes it is very messy, not a fan of the mess it makes. It’s good for cutting through some of the thick sludge of mud that’s hard to scrape with the shovel but yeah definitely too much mess! We do need a better broom, we have two outdoor brooms but they’re not hard enough for doing this. I’m not sure how we keep going to be honest, we’re shattered at the end of the day but wake up the next day ready for it again, don’t get me wrong we do sometimes walk out there and see it all still and think ‘woah, there is still sooo much to do” but…it’s only us who is going to do it so we gotta get on with it! Now and again I feel like I might be getting a cold but then it just disappears again. The family who lived here before, used to get their water from a spring well from down the lane before the rain water harvesting was put in we think the 80’s. It would be lovely to find a well but I don’t think there is one hiding anywhere, unfortunately. It would be lovely to see how others compare, I’ve looked at lots of online and belong to a few Facebook groups dedicated to old vernacular buildings and it’s fascinating to see.

This looks like a paved stone courtyard. It doesn’t look like real earth. Just years of partly rotted sticks and stuff. No grass on top. Maybe animals were kept there.

We think it’s a lot of manure and soil combined over the years and then when we dug out the outbuilding floor of all the soil in there we’ve added to the pile outside the building unfortunately 🫣

Hello, we’re you able to save any of the old furniture that you found in the house? I noticed a pub chair in the bedroom with two beds and a white iron bed ( it did have a knob missing on top) in one of your early videos. Hello from Arkansas, USA
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 5 месяцев назад
We saved as much as we could. Unfortunately a lot was so badly woodworm eaten that it disintegrated on moving it. We do have a few chairs and some bedroom furniture bits and pieces. We also save both of the iron beds. The downside is we just haven’t had the time to do anything with them as of yet, but we will get to them and see what we can bring back to life again. 😊
