Searches 1981-2023 -- 2024 Update

In 2022, I first created this project to consolidate all the research data relating to searches and discoveries made regarding the story of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine's disappearance on Mount Everest on June 8, 1924. The project naturally grew to include additional data on all the pre-World War II expeditions, then the pre-modern era expeditions, and then morphed again to include historic routes on the North (Tibetan) Side of the mountain. This past week, I updated the project again to streamline the user interface, make the data consistent across all three views of the North Face, and include some bits of new information, namely about the 1981 French Military Expedition.
The project can be viewed on my blog here: jakenorton.com/everest-searches-routes-discoveries/

If he could see it Andrew Irvine would be content with the time you have spent looking for him and bringing his story to life , maybe he fell the whole way and slid off the ledge mallory was gripping so tightly to . Its good to see you back on youtube and nobody has put more time on this or shown more integrity doing so , I hope the best for you in the future you are one of the good guys on youtube

Thank you, Gary - much appreciated! Like you, I wonder if Irvine maybe did go down the North Face, past Mallory, and on to the Central Rongbuk. Probably worth someone going out there one day to see if there's any sign, but highly unlikely with all the snow sloughing off the face...but, stranger things have happened!

The fact that there are so called “mountaineering” channels that put out videos narrated with AI voiced readings of a Wikipedia page get 100k’s of views is criminal. Jake is a living breathing climber and subject matter expert with a gargantuan number of hours invested in this channel and in the topics he discusses. Jake’s lack of algorithm assistance makes the subscribers and views he does have truly top quality. I have learned so much here and count the days until the next upload. For those interested in Everest, Mallory and Irvine, or mountaineering in general this channel is akin to having Paul Simon post videos about songwriting. It’s truly a treasure. Thank you so much for sharing your work.

The AI is a master at SEO and other methods of getting views. These real channels need to start cheating the algorithm also. If you can beat the system you better do it.

Thank you for the kind words, Matthew - I really appreciate it! And, mostly, I'm happy people are getting something out of the bits I've shared. I've never put it out there with the intent of racking up subscribers, etc., just trying to find the best vehicles to get info, research, and the stories out there. And, I definitely am not skilled on the algorithm side of things or the logic of getting more eyes on things, but that's ok - I'd rather have people like you, quality over quantity I guess! Again, thank you, and be well!

How close was Mallory from the safety of his high camp when he took his fall ? And considering it was dark, roughly how long would it have taken him to reach the safety of his tent from the fall area ?.........Thank you.
@jake_norton
@jake_norton 5 месяцев назад
Hard to say with certainty, as we don't know where he fell from. But, from where we found him, he's probably about an hour or so from the 1924 Camp VI. If we assume his fall originated in the lower portion of the Yellow Band, which I believe it must have, he was again probably an hour, give or take a bit, from his Camp VI. Hope this helps!

@jake_norton
@jake_norton 5 месяцев назад
Thanks, jaybee7890. Hmm, I really have no idea. I'm not convinced of the Chinese accounts thus far, as they seem to be second and third hand accounts. But, that's not to say they're not true, either. I'd like to believe Irvine is still up there, and he may be, but I'm increasingly doubtful due to the Chinese rumors coupled with a lot of people having looked in what seem to be the logical places and not finding him. So, to answer, I'd optimistically say 50/50 at best on him still being up there.

Hey Jake, so the piece of sweater that was found afterwards was that possibly from when Pollard and Politz re-visited Mallory and took his clothes and a piece blew away ? Or possibly ripped away by the fall. Also do you know if piece went to a museum or the family afterwards. Thanks
@jake_norton
@jake_norton 5 месяцев назад
Hey Ryan, hard to say. But, possible that it originated from the second search. Could have been the first search as well. Or, could have been sitting there for 77 years until Tap found it in 2001. There's really no way to tell. As for where it went, everything from the 2001 expedition went into a museum display the expedition put together. It was all on display for a year or so in Tacoma, WA, but then there was no outside interest in it traveling elsewhere, sadly, so my understanding is it is all in storage at the Washington State Historic Society.

very nice work, great map. One thing i said it on a other channel too, you can simply catch some ravens up in camp 4 and giv them small gps trackers, they will show you all "poi" at the mountain, bit morbid, the older the body the less time is spend on the spot, but they still will chek it from time to time, you´ll have a cheap "heat" map.
@jake_norton
@jake_norton 4 месяца назад
Thanks for your note, and that is a great idea! The ravens - "goraks" in Tibet - are amazing, and do indeed seem to find every item of interest up there. We even had them in 2001 figuring out how to open tent zippers to get inside! Smart birds. I guess the challenge would be getting someone up there who could catch them and collar/tag them!

Where was Irvine's boot found on the map?
@TheKruxed
@TheKruxed 5 месяцев назад
The drone photo of the fall area is mildly convincing that it was Irvines body there, but I guess we'll never know since no one wants to release the rest of the images of that area, that should be a large suspicion to anyone investigating Everest at all, let alone the 1924 attempt
@jake_norton
@jake_norton 4 месяца назад
I'm not sure what drone photo or footage you're referencing, but I'd love to see it. As for releasing that footage, not my footage to release, but I'd bet there's issues for Renan and team with copyright and who owns it, etc. That's a pretty basic reality of productions like theirs and ones I've been involved with. It's easy for Michael and others to want it all magically out there, but there's more to the story, it just doesn't translate well to a conspiratorial RU-vid video unfortunately. Additionally, Renan is not a researcher on this story, but more of a brief visitor. Mark wrote his book, but not much else. I think they've moved on to other things, other projects. But, if you want to see the drone footage, want it released, could you please comment about it elsewhere - maybe ask Renan? As I've said repeatedly, I have no involvement with it, never have, and have never seen it, and can't help you get your eyes on it. Take care.

With the piece of Mallorys jumper that was found, is working theory that it blew there in the wind? Seems like a fair distance to travel
@jake_norton
@jake_norton 5 месяцев назад
Most likely. It could have been dislodged in either of the two searches in 1999, but also could have blown there over time and amazingly gotten stuck. In 2019 I found a small scrap of the 1933 tent fabric plus a match right next to each other about 75m away along the Longland Traverse. Who knows how long they had been sitting there, in the wind, just snagged in the rocks.

I've been enthralled by this story decades. I was wondering if an expedition could search right uphill above George Mallory's remain to try and find Irvine. They probably fell together on the way back (on your yellow track), the rope broke and AI either stayed above or fell all the way down the face. He might also have tried to reach the camp if he wasn't too badly hurt. Yet there is a chance he might still be above GM. It could also be a good idea to follow the Norton and Somervell track (or/and Smythe's one) and then carry on (via a zigzag route?) to the third step. There might be some 1924 items left on the way...
@jonathanclegg1595
@jonathanclegg1595 5 месяцев назад
Do you think its possible that the 1975 body that was found was Irvine and not Mallory?
@jake_norton
@jake_norton 5 месяцев назад
It's certainly possible, but I don't think so. It seems that Wang found Mallory given the location and proximity to the 1975 Camp VI. But, again, there's always a possibility, especially if the new information is correct, that Irvine was there once upon a time, not far from Mallory, but was found by Wang and then disposed of in some way. But, the accounts of what, when, and where the Chinese found are hard to follow.
@rg3412
@rg3412 5 месяцев назад
@@jake_nortonI feel we are giving up on the China connection. If we could foster an interest in the search for Irvine inside the Chinese speaking community, who knows what could be revealed. In other words I feel the M&I search community remains to US/UK centric.

Jake you mention the remains of 5 climbers in your 1999 search with C. Anker et al.....any efforts to identify them and get them off the mountain? Although this is my question it is not the crux of my query...given the time etc it would seem Irwin, if there, would be long gone as you had found the remains of other climbers but not his....so therefore he IS missing. Otherwise if there were only their remains and not his why would they be left and his not found? ps love the channel.

Irvine is up there. He is. He will be found, that is my firm belief. However, I think he will be found purely by accident, just like he always has been. Every sighting of Irvine share a couple patterns: tired or disoriented climbers wandering off known routes, all on their own, or in one case, a climber wandering around, off the known route, randomly stumbles upon him.
