Back in the Late 80's I was assigned to a Deuce and a half while in the Army reserves. We had to g to Fort Drum NY which was a distance of 368 miles. What should take you just under 6 hours in a regular vehicle took me 14 in one of those. Thing would run forever just at a v...e...r...y slow pace!

I was in the Army back then too and those old Deuces were rock solid reliable. Often times when it was cold, they were the only vehicle in the motor pool that would start. We used to have one that we kept a slave cable in at all times because it would always start no matter how cold it was and we'd use it to jump everything else we needed.

Hi diesel creek. m54/m55 is better except the wheel hubs are horrifically expensive. It's a little less smoky too. you do NOT want to drive one of those at 55 mph unless it's in really good condition and tuned up considerably. Before I spent a lot of money on my M55 it was a deathtrap above 40 mph. New wheel bearings, slight regear, lockers on all 3 diffs, and a full overhaul of the spicer 5spd, the air brakes, the suspension, newer air brakes stuff, super singles, made it a lot less of a hazard. 55 is still pushing it though, maybe to pass but not sustained. These days it comfortably does 50 all day, have to slow down to 35-40 in 4th gear on hills, or lesser at a lower gear for steeper ones. It depends on how heavily laden.

I may need to bridge a creek on my land and I think the most practical way to do it would be using 2 or 3 used, flat bed semitrailers, but I doubt such methods could get me a subdivision permit for access to a housing development. Probably not up to code, but the contractor wants at least 80 grand to build a bridge over that creek. (in Western North Carolina).

The Deuces were all A2s I liked the beds looked pretty well built but the trucks looked a bit on the rough side. Parts are still readily available for these trucks and used in the right environments they will do a great job. Limitations, these are not POSI on any axle, the engine is a multi-fuel and that DOES NOT MEAN YOU CAN RUN STRAIGHT GASOLINE in them you will destroy the engine in short order! The trucks in stock form are extremely loud in the cab and the "hearing protection required" sticker on the dash is there for a reason! With a bit of work they can be made quiet enough to actually talk inside the cab going down the road. They are NOT fast! The truck weighs 14K pounds and the engine puts out 134 HP so that gives you and idea on the gearing required to make the truck work. I generally never exceed 2200 RPM with my Deuces and that puts me right at 52 MPH on stock tires. Great trucks, very reliable with regular maintenance and will last a very long time. If your do stupid stuff like mud runs, DEEP water fording in mud you will break a lot of stuff and its NOT the trucks fault, be respectful and they will treat you well in return!

Having run quite a few and worked on a ton of skid steer I’d have to say my opinion for the best all around skid steer for reliability, ease of maintenance and capacity is a Case 1840 with the 4-390 (4bt) Cummins engine. If you really truly need a bigger machine than that then go for it, but if all a guy wanted was a good skid steer towards the middle of the scale on power/weight/capacity, you can’t go wrong with an 1840.

No hydraulic tank (the filler went in the hole in front of the dash) and the blade hydraulic controls come out and floorboard level under the right arm rest. You don't need that one unless you had a parts machine but the winch is very handy. Used to run one like this a good bit. My Uncle had one.

Bought a new JD 5075E tractor in december and JD had a $6000.00 discount in place. Discount discontinued in Jan and last time I checked the tractor is now worth $8000.00 more than I paid for it. Prices for used jumped because of stimulus money as well as shortage of new.PPP loans are also the reason: money is fungible and following the rules to the letter means most business's can still invest in newer equipment. To explain: PPP used for payroll and a very limited number of allowable expenses. So if your payroll and other limited expenses allowed for a 100K forgivable loan from the PPP you could now have 100K from your income stream available for other things.Dot your I's and cross your T's and you pass the audit, abide by both the letter and spirit of the law and expand your equipment inventory.

Auctions definitely did change a lot over the last few years. use to be it was big companies getting rid of older stuff or lot of equipment after finishing big profile jobs, which was mosty bought by private homeowners, that wanted something on the cheap, with a few guys like you that would buy for resealability value. now, there were so many people being stuck at home with nothing to do but shop online, finding all these auctions and noticing there was a bit of money to be made, the result is there have never been as many " Flippers" they all drove the prices up by over bidding and overpaying, it pushes most of us out. they did the same thing on the government surplus auctions here too.

Deuce and a half’s are hard to kill, they’ll go just about anywhere (in low) and fun and all... Ya Fun IF: you like having Popeye forearms! That standard steering ain’t no joke, it’s a workout after a days worth of driving! “Oh it’s not that bad” says the person who’s never had to ten wheel while delivering supplies out in the woods in one, pffft. It does make its own path though, especially if it has a winch! Personally, I’d love an old school (M51 type standard) 5 ton dump myself. Easy turn, and easy clutch, I loved them. Cause who doesn’t like playing in a dump truck right? (Hooked me for thirteen years anyway as a combat engineer when I first started my career.) The army eventually changed EVERYTHING over to auto trans, so no more fun shifting or trying to teach young-ins double clutching, lol. Some decent deals there at the auction, I’ve never been but it was fun tagging along. Thank you for taking us, I learned something... 👍🏼👍🏼 from this guy!

Something about auctions makes people pay WAAYYYY too much for some things while others are good deals. I got a Steiner 525 tractor with 72" mowing deck for circa $2600 years ago. When I bought the machine it had 1700 hrs on it and was 4 or 5 years old. It was a really good deal at the time. You just never know. When I went and picked the Steiner up one of the guys who worked there told me a dealer had bought the rest of the machines and was pissed that he had missed that one. I'm sure he was because they were selling for 8-9k at the time without the deck. You have the right attitude. Set a price you are willing to spend and stick to it. I think some people let their desire to not "lose" make them spend more than they should.

A lot of that inoperable stuff sometimes goes cheap and sometimes goes expensive. I picked up a confined space blower for 15 bucks on a last min whatever buy and when I got it home all i had to do was reset the built in breaker and It worked just fine. Retails for around 1500 bucks. There are deals to be had though you got to really watch what you are buying. Lots of things go super high when you can find retail stuff of the same thing far cheaper. I have seen used or new items that you can buy local sell higher at auctions.

It’s most fun buying something you don’t need especially if you get it cheap. There’s always the excuse that your doing your part to help the economy by keeping the money in circulation.

I usually try to stick with the timed auction. I've gotten a lot of good deals. Most recently a dozer blade that would've fit that D4. Got it for $100. Although, it gets on my last nerve that they keep adding time. It seems to me like it defeats the purpose of a "timed" auction. I get that it's about making as much as possible on an item, but at least call it something else.

I have been putting this one off. I am up and can't sleep so. I figured why not watch some more diesel creek. LMAO 🤣at 1:10 AM. AUGUST 22ND 2021. Just so you can know what time the weirdness starts. LOL 😆 Deuce and half former US NAVY Seabees builder. Drove one in Roosevelt Rhodes Puerto Rico. Love those old girls.

Man, your closing shots of the VW pickup bring back memories for me, big time! Way back in the late 80s and early 90s, I had two Rabbit diesels and one VW pickup diesel! They were such fun to drive, and got 45 MPG! Those were the days!

The M35 beds look original, just with the front vertical on the bed cut off and replaced with some steel work. Those were M35a2c 'drop sides' beds. The sides are on hinges set with steel pins. You can still see the bed-side of the hinge on those.

Thanks, Matt, cool time at the auction yard. Yes, those Army deuce and a halfs are definitely cool trucks. I drove a couple in my Army hitch here in Colorado years ago. We have 3 deuces in our aircraft museum inventory. Fun to drive, one is Korean War era, one built in the 60s by Jeep and one 4x4 deuce, Desert Storm vintage tan paint. We get our vehicles through our nonprofit status from military disposal. Very cool vehicles. But as you say, you have to be careful, you can wind up with an expensive boat anchor!

Too bad you didn't get one of those Army trucks, I and others would've loved to see what you'd do with it. They're big, slow, TOUGH SOBs, but loads of fun to drive thru streams, rivers, mud, up hills, downhills, work them, etc. The M35A2 was one of my favorite vehicles to drive when I was in the Army back in the 80s and 90s.

You're right about the skid steers availability. I just purchased a new bobcat s770 from a dealer and he could not locate one for me at any nearby branches. We ordered from the factory and he's telling me 30-40 days fyi.

I was at a navy auction and selected the lots I was going to bid on and what not to bid on. One lot was some engine parts I wanted but it had been grouped with 2 pallets of toilet paper so I didn't bid but the guy next to me did. When the hammer fell the auctioneer said"I was wondering who would buy the toilet paper?" There was much swearing and cursing from the bidder while the rest of us laughed our heads off.
