Ben Affleck presenting Malik Bendjelloul and Simon Chinn with the Oscar® for Best Documentary Feature for "Searching for Sugar Man" at the 2013 Oscars®.
RIP Sixto Rodriguez (July 10, 1942 - August 8, 2023), aged 81 And RIP Malik Bendjelloul (September 14, 1977 - May 13, 2014), aged 36 You both will be remembered as legends.
Just heard that filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul passed away today, I am very chocked and sad :'( RIP Malik, you made one of the best documentaries I've ever seen!
Remember it was 2 South Africans that went on the quest to find him and refused to let his legacy to music die because of unscrupulous leaches in his own country. Without the South African initiative this documentary would not exist. From the first word I ever heard Rodriquez sing I was hooked by his insight into life. It is something we as South Africans could and can still relate to. Peace to the world and thank you for this recognition.
@@claudelebel49 His so called manager did from his original material? He had to go back to being a manual laborer to earn a living after releasing his music.
@@claudelebel49 royalty checks were paid regularly to Clarence Avant by the various recording labels in South Africa that printed and distributed all of Sixto`s albums...thousands and thousands of dollars paid over a 30 year period and the artist saw NONE of it... Clarence is a leech!!!
There are times when a story doesn't end with the rolling of the credits, but takes instead, an unfortunate twist which leads to an unthinkable loss... "Searching For Sugarman" is truly the mark and memory of Malik's time spent on earth and will be forever celebrated as one the greatest and most beautifully told stories of our lifetime, and for that we will never forget Malik's name, and for his gift of this wonderful documentary, we can never be thankful enough... May he rest in peace...
Shame on the cutting of the acceptance speech. So many ramble on and on and say virtually nothing, but here they are just given the middle finger. NO respect for documentary filmmakers at all.
So fucking rude. Clearly these film makers aren't used to public speaking and are very nervous to accept the award, to that add the forced shuffling off the stage and you've got yourself an even more uncomfortable situation - both to be in and to look at.
Search for life of pi winning best visual effects. That is disrespect. That company, as far as I know, was made to accept a budget too low, and went bankrupt after the film. When they started to talk about the problem of VFX studios in general, they played the jaws as well and turned off the mics.
@@i6tir The Oscars used to be famous for running long (who would have thought that getting a bunch of narcissistic extroverts, whose entire existances revolve around holding the spotlight, to hand each other gold statues could get out of control?) The show kept getting longer and longer and for various reasons, including big financial ones, the producers sought to constrain the runtime. You might have noticed they used the theme from jaws; that was actually a joke meant to soften the blow of rushing people off. It wasn't a slight against the film makers (however, I'm sure the general public cares more about seeing Tom Cruise or whoever than they do about documentaries).
You should watch Punk Syndrome & Punk Voyage docummentaries! Just as good & warmhearted but sadder as Finding Sugar Man. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j8a9aYOn8nw.html & ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RuyHJyGiY4Q.html
Rest in Peace, Malik... Just the thought of you editing Searching For Sugarmen in your own home, on your computer, and then win an oscar, inspired me...
Sadly, Malik did commit suicide. I'm so sad for him. I'm sad that he's gone and for the suffering that led him to make that decision. My father also committed suicide 4 years ago this week. The pain never goes away…ever.
I started listening to Rodriguez's music after I saw searching for sugarman. My new favorite artist, I simply have never heard anything like it. I can't believe I had never heard of him, thanks for the documentary for exposing me to his music!

Thank you so much Malik for your life changing film. The feature about you on the DVD extra was even better than the film itself ! Broken people make beautiful art. Like Bill Hicks and Kurt Cobain - gone all too soon leaving a massive void in the world. In Bill's words 'why do all the good people leave while the demons are left to run amok ? ' RIP you are and forever will be a legend.
This movie was pretty cool but more than anything else I like to find good musicians I hadn't heard before , and Sixto Rodriguez is definitely one of the good ones . I really like both the albums and the song ' Think of You' he'd released earlier. He's a great writer and singer
Gracious, natural very talented artists. Thank you South Africa for finding him and introducing him to a new generation of fans. He was also adored in Australia and New Zealand. Funny old world his own country turned their back on him and even stole his royalties. What else can one say? @@abcdecghijklmn
Well deserved award, despite the fact that my favorite documentary of the five nominees was "How to survive a plague" . Very sad to hear about the dead of the director 😕
I just watched this documentary earlier today. Rodriquez was such an interesting person, stayed humble through everything that was happening to him, nothing seemed to faze him
Great great doc about a humble brilliant human we need more people like him and the passion of the film makers that only comes from adversity and someone said where are the blacks they were probably more worried about survival than listening to an America folk singer just saying
How his live would have changed if he received a huge check from South Africa for records sold? He would have known that there are thousands of fans somewhere. His American producer did not only stole Rodriguez's money. He also kept Rodriguez from confidence to write more music. So he stole from all Rodriguez's fans.
At that time I didn't give much importance to that documentary, I watched it after finding out about Sixto's death. What a great discovery for me, it's like suddenly discovering another Bod Dylan. I was doubly sad to learn that this director, Malik Bendjelloul, committed suicide a year after receiving this award, it´s because he losed the fight against depression.
Wow. Just got back from the Rodriguez show in Detroit to this bit of tragic news. Eerie. RIP and thanks for introducing this lucky guy to Rodriguez's music.
ROBERT RAMOS I Would say Rodriguez was equally lucky, since he's got everything to thank Malik for being known outside south africa now. He really kick started his international career. That said i agree
Sixto is such a soulful sort of man. He seems to feel everything deeply and privately. I feel certain somebody let him know Mr. Bendjelloul has died. His grief will be awful. Perhaps not as awful as that of the family but still awful.
SIXTO RODRGUEZ EL POETA MUSICO DE LOS POBRES 🇪🇸 PROFETA VISIONARIO YA ES UN MITO DE MUSICA TE DESEAMOS EL VIAJE MAS BONITO DEL MUNDO TE LO MERCES HONESTO BUENA PERSONA HERES EL MAS GRANDE SIXTO RODRIGUEZ ❤
Malik Benjelloul, where are you!!! early in morning today, i read about Malik dead! and i think, this is not real, this is have not happen, but after a min, i begining to craying,so sad,the tok mi auers to andestand that,my brean was depressing my boddy is shaking! i was shocking, the tok mi a day to being normal a gaene!! reast in piese Malik! the world have lost a talent filmmaker, Thome" Björling
Malik Bendjelloul did piss on legs from some very powerful Music-Moguls - I could imagine that this has been the real reason for his mysterious early death...
Funny how you hear these "such and such got robbed"... they are usually biased gay folks for How To Survive a Plague, or biased feminists in regards to Invisible War who have never even seen Searching for Sugar Man.. Well here is a hint - the best film won. 6000 Academy voters didn't make a mistake.
The american music business is one of the most ruthless and destroying forces in the planet. They are no interested in art or to help real artist. The only interested in making money. Good music good content in lyrics create awareness awaking of the mind. It help us humans to go true hard times and suffering. To fallow in love to feel good inspired. And to represent our culture in front of the world. Music can bring down tirany and oppression. And also help us to think and shape the mind of generations .but the criminals of business shut the voices of true to there own agendas. Rodriguez was one of those victims silence by his people for writing about true .butt goid enough another culture recognized and give him what he deserve. History will recognize him .something that pop music will never have
