John Braum from Wisconsin owns a 1939 Sears Economy. John shares the history of his tractor and the passion for collecting these uncommon classics.
In the 1930’s the Sears, Roebuck & Company was working hard to become a player the the tractor business. They wanted to develop an efficient, reliable and cost competitive tractor. In 1937 the Peru Wheel Company of Peru, IL contracted with sears to do just that. Peru proposed using rebuilt tractor and transmission components from a Ford Model A with the frame and castings supplied by Peru. With this the Economy Tractor was born.

I have a really important question. How did they solve the issue of an engine governor? Because car engines don't have them but tractors tend to need them.
@BeingMe23
@BeingMe23 Год назад
@gregorymalchuk272 Every engine has governor to help with over speeding. Now a diesel engine has a governor on the injection pump to help with torque rise under heavy loads.
@n.mcneil4066
@n.mcneil4066 Год назад
@@gregorymalchuk272 These tractors would have had an after market governor (such as Pierce or Novi) mounted on the right side of the engine & run by the fan belt.

Here in New York where I live there was a barn on Route 38 (between Owego NY and Newark Valley), that had a barn just sitting beside the road!! Not an uncommon site for this area by no means, sure, but one day my car broke down (flat tire) literally 30 feet from the barn. Has I limped the car to the shoulder and jumped out to change the tire I ignored the large classic barn sitting there road side. And I fought to the tire changed. After I finished the job, grabbed the tire and then the jack to toss them back into the trunk, I looked over at the barn finally and THAT is when I noticed there was a small "plaque" on the side barn nailed too it, and my curiosity got the better of me. Like most people I had never actually LOOKED at the barn and it had literally sat there for YEARS, and I myself had drove by it many times in my life totally ignoring it!! But this strange plaque I had never noticed before really surprised me when I got close enough to read it......it said: Sears & Roebuck Barn, it gave a year and a model number and a catalog number. The plaque wasn't very big in fact it was only about the size of a sheet of paper which looked as though it was cooper or bronze with red and black paint on it for the lettering and the decor. And you could barely make out some of the other things listed on it. BUT I was totally taken back that here this barn had sat probably for almost 100 years an NOBODY realized it was a Sears Barn!! Back about 15 years ago I was driving that same stretch of road, and as I got to where the barn was, I noticed then it was gone!! Apparently somebody had tore it down finally, it was old and weathered after all....but when realized it was gone, I wondered if anybody else ever read that plaque and realized just how important that barn would have been had they kept it??? Probably not, because it is gone from history now!!

@mtpocketswoodenickle2637

Imagine if you will, that they paid with gold and silver coin as real money not fiat currency of today? Let's use the $450 for a house as an example. A one ounce, twenty dollar double eagle, divided into 450 = 22.5 ounces of gold. At today's gold price, that equals = $29250.oo

April 2019 and in my 60's . I grew up in pork n dairy farming and with horses . Thrashed , binders, snow fence silos , drove a milkcan truck and onto Bulk tankers . . and I've never seen or heard of a Sears - Roebuck tractor . This put a Smile on my face just being Happy for you John !! Stamp collecting LOL ! Was that suggested by a fem or one of today's Millions of feminized Manginas . " Hang on to em and Enjoy them " I myself would hate to take them out in the fields now and get them dirty . Parades is a Good idea with a small white 2 sided S & R signage identifying them . Btw , I'm The Sign Doctor - Since before 1972 . I Still hand letter all kinds of things including some Old tractors here too in Ontario , Canada . Last summer I relettered a couple Old CO-OP tractors . Oh yah , and I also think I remember Motor Bikes and mini bikes being sold in Old S & R newsprint type catalogs . . which also doubled as toilet paper with time in the Out House . Last - Sears did it to themselves ... Young incompetent and Greedy Management and Office staff closed them down . I was a VERY GOOD Long Time 90% of Catalog customer to them till about 2005 for Music , Many Tools as to warranty , Clothes and all kinds of Appliances and Household items , as I don't like going shopping to stores . They started $crewing up several times , so I stopped dealing with them completely .

I think Sears' death began when they decided to change their tool warranty of replacing the tool, even old tools that had a lifetime warranty were included. That changed MY tool buying to Lowes. When someone went to Sears to replace a broken tool, more often than not they bought other stuff, another tool, clothes, or even a boat. Of course everyone's favorite Walmart harmed them and everyone else. Walmart whose founder swore nothing would be sold in his store not made in America. It seems his descendants have the policy nothing will be sold in their store that IS made in America. Long live greed and china.

Sears would have been much better off if they didn't throw a life line by buying the sinking ship, Kmart. Which dragged them both under. Sears has poor management and their CEO Eddie Lambert is a total scumbag. Deliberately ran Sears in the ground so he himself could buy it out of bankruptcy court for Pennies on the dollar. His greed caused a lot of people to hit the unemployment line.

I think the mail order tractor didn't last very long, because of lack of dealer support. All other tractor company's had a dealer in, or near a farmers home town. I you needed a part for your Sears tractor you had to send an order for the part, then wait for it to show up in the mail. Having a dealer near by a farmer could make a trip to town to get what he needed. Plus there were skilled mechanics on hand for anyone that didn't have the tools, or mechanical skills it took to make any repairs on the tractor.
@michigandon
@michigandon 5 лет назад
I believe this to be somewhat of a problem yet today with Northern Tools Nortrac line of tractors. Perhaps not quite as bad as way back then since you can at least call the 1-800 number or get online to order a part and/or get technical support, but still a bit of a hindrance.
